Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)
NashvilleHoosier replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We all seem to be overlooking some nice little nuggets from JerryYeagley. I haven't been as active on this board until this past season but the little I've seen him (or her) post, it seems to always carry a lot of weight. He dropped a tasty little bomb around midnight last night, that I stumbled upon in my 3:51am stupor. Kudos to Chris, IUwins, and Jerry for their willingness to share. -

It’s 3:51 in the AM. My daughter woke up scared of the dark. After putting her back to bed I laid here for 20 minutes telling myself specifically not to pick up my phone. Yet here I am. Shame on you all again! I’m definitely not sleeping now!! -

At this point we'd all probably take him only committing to coaching 90% of our games and the rest were on us.... -

This did make me think that if this all goes down, there will be a lot of new Hoosier fans welcomed into this world about 9-10 months from now. -

Yes, thank you for not visiting after we lost at home to Purdue. And Rutgers. And.....well yeah, what a time to be alive (and on BTB!!)!!! -

In fairness, I think Jesus has been around for a while, even when you were grumpy Archie era Josh. :-) -

I'm a bit surprised at the level of negativity too, even as someone who doesn't have him terribly high on my list. Coaching track record in college alone? I'd be thrilled to have that. The age is always a concern since we've cycled through many coaches in the last 2 decades but you're hitting on the moving parts that would alleviate some of that concern. The thugs comment is nearly as big of a concern to me. Regardless of his intent, he'll have an uphill battle in recruiting every single time b/c of that comment and recruiting is hard enough, especially if you're doing it clean. If that alone delays him getting things going we could be talking about him in his mid 70s before he gets us where we expect him to get us. Then we are already talking about another transition, even if those moving parts were in place, which scares the crap out of me. All that said, if in the end, he is out next coach, and it happens b/c 1a, 1b, and 2 were not feasible.....well holy cow we had a heckuva #3 choice that I ultimately think the fanbase will get behind pretty easily. -

I don't want to derail, but this reminds me of when we were choosing hotels to stay at for the Gator Bowl last year. My buddy said he preferred to stay farther out for cheaper, I told him I'd flip a coin...heads = downtown close to stadium, tails = suburbs for cheaper. Sent him a video of it landing on heads, so downtown it was. I never told him that it was the 7th video I recorded of me flipping the coin b/c it kept landing on tails but I wanted to stay downtown. Point of the story.....keep shakin' that 8 ball and flippin' that coin Scotty D!!! -

Some purely speculative thoughts that could be going through Brad's mind, eliminating every other factor besides coaching: 1.) If the NBA ends up being where I want to be, even if I left, I could likely come back any time. 2.) If the only college job I would ever take is Indiana, this may be my only chance. They've whiffed a few times. Everything points to this hire being more important than ever, and they are determined to get it right. This job might not be open again until I'm retired. 3.) If I end up hating recruiting, see point #1. -

Yet they post a picture of him saying "Peace out, Boston, it's been real"......very interesting. -
One of the most under-appreciated things about Crean was that he provided some just some epically meme-able photos over his years here. Amazing.

I'm up working right now b/c I didn't get anything done at all today. Shame on you all! -
Either that or he panicked, threw up over Bloomfield, told the pilot to turn it around, then rallied and said nevermind, stay the course.
-
If you reveal who you actually are you likely never have to buy a beer, or hell, meal, in Bloomington ever again.
-
Yeah that's the only thing he hasn't just thrown a choppy half sentence at. I listened for about 20 minutes and he suggested paying Alford $1M per year for 5 years. Then he hung up on a caller who asked about the Pierce situation, after acting like he had no idea what the caller was talking about. A caller he didn't hang up on? One who suggested Dakich should be the next coach. I had to bail at that point.
-
I don't want to derail, but I took a leap and pulled up Dakich. Boy is he just filling air space with a whole lot of nothing. I've probably heard "I'm just sayin'..." about 75 times without him actually saying anything.
-
But imagine the roller coaster some of us have been through with the pumper -> dumper -> pumper transition. I'm an emotional wreck over here.

We need to cook up the thermometer they use on Beard, make it read 135 degrees which of course means immediate quarantine in AH.....for 25 years.

What does the team as a whole do? Do they get together at all to watch this knowing their name isn’t gonna be called? Is it still interesting b/c it’s college basketball? -

Sheesh if there is a statement tomorrow that he is back, after saying nothing at all up until now...no vote of confidence (which could have happened weeks ago), no previous positive words....that says I tried to make a move and wasn’t allowed or nobody was interested. -
Yeah I don’t disagree that we can’t handcuff ourselves to the state but how many have left in those same 20 years that we could have desperately used that were far better options than what was on our rosters? The Sean May’s...Conley and Oden, Teague, Lyles, Irvin, Harris. Kyle Guy, deshaun Thomas. The list goes on, that’s just top of my head. We aren’t going to get them all, but being the flagship program in a state with the talent level it has, it doesn’t make any sense not to take advantage of that talent as much as possible.
