Just flipped it on to future IU head coach Steve Alford vs. future IU head coach Nico Medved. Good game. Future IU head coach Dan Dickau on the call.

Yeah there isn’t much sympathy for playing tough schedules b/c we’ve really never been missing the top end resume wins. We’ve continually mixed in far too many mediocre (quad 2 or lower) losses. -

Stooooopp. It's a great job. It's lost a bit of luster. The playing field has leveled across major college hoops. But it's still a great job. -

The only thing that could make this story better is if this old fella walked off and you said, "hey mister, what is your name again?" And he said, "Stad......Stad Brevens". Then turned around and walked off. -
Cool. I was wondering if Carl is the rogue son who turns off the spigot while evil laughing into the night. If I were in his position and Purdue were in ours, would I do that? I'm not definitely saying "yes".........wait, no, I am. I'm definitively saying "yes".

Wikipedia tells me his a Purdue grad. MBA from Iowa. I'm making the assumption that his family's name is the one displayed on our practice facility. But would he actually give money?

Do we like Dana Altman at all? I could be a bit skewed right now since I took some action on the Ducks when they were down 9 and +390 to win last night, and I hit the over. -
So yeah, in that scenario, if Archie's results fell back off after the title, moving on would be fine. Much like the Ollie scenario at UConn. Cutting bait immediately after winning that title though would be putting the nail in our own coffin. Agree to disagree on that one.

Of course they are. But we're also already talking about our biggest targets not having interest in this job. Who by the way, NONE of the targets we have discussed have actually won a national title (unless people are still talking about Bennett and Donovan). And winning a national championship doesn't qualify as "not performing to expectations" in the world of college hoops. Whatever the guy you took over for did, his underperformance obviously didn't include whatever the absolute pinnacle of achievement for the field you are in. It's not about being scared away from a challenge, it's about being smart about not throwing away what you have to play a game you can't win. Even the bravest coach, scared of nothing in the world, ready to take on anything, would look at our job as a game they can't win if we fire a coach that achieves the absolute pinnacle achievement possible in that field.

We're talking the equivalent of Indiana Football here. If Tom Allen is around for 14 years and take us to the B1G title game a few times, makes some NY6 bowls but never gets us in the playoff he'll be the most sought after coach in college football and come to think if it he will have never stayed here for 14 years. And didn't we debunk the March theory several pages ago? :-) For the record, I'm on the fence on Drew. Not advocating for him. Just discussing. -

I already knew your answer.

Sure it does. The only thing I'll dispute there is that is probably more like 99.9%, not 98%. But we're talking about people already making more money than they need. But what would be convincing about making more money and winning titles if we ran of a coach that won a title? They would look at this place as....okay, the previous coach had to start from ground zero, ended up winning two B1G titles and went to 3 sweet 16s and that wasn't good enough, then the guy that replaced him went: no postseason, NIT quarters, NCAA tourney, national title and they fired him. I'm already making $4M (or more?) in a job where I am successful (we aren't going after an unsuccessful coach)....what the hell would I have to do to keep that job if I took it? No chance anyone even sniffs it unless we're forking over money that we don't have and no school would ever pay.
-
Holy cow. We’ve finally identified the actual scenario that would end the program. Firing our coach after winning a national championship and hanging that 6th banner that we so desperately have been craving for over 2 decades. There wouldn’t even be a rec league coach take that job. I’ve never coached a single game of any sport and I wouldn’t take the job after that. You couldn’t get someone who had to google what basketball is to take the job. Not a single player would ever come here again. There would be no program to be had. I don’t even know if that’s a sentence I’m so stunned at this thought. At least we’d go out on a high note I guess.
-
Wait a minute.....maybe it's a bit too early here. I know it's a hypothetical and one that won't even have a chance of happening, but I'm I reading that there are people who would still want to fire him if the impossible happened and we went and won it all this year?

The flip side could be that he’s sort of maxed out at Baylor (minus of course any banners) and nothing he does will make basketball more important at that school or in that state that football. He could take on a challenge like Indiana and if it didn’t work out, he still has the remarkable thing he did at Baylor on his resume, and there are a hundred Baylors out there that would welcome him with open arms. -

I brought up Danny Hurley several days ago. I don't remember getting any reaction so I assumed everyone was at most just "meh". I probably am as well but he's intriguing to me. Solid run at Rhode Island. With Bouknight, they look like they could be dangerous in March in year 3 at UConn, year 1 in the Big East. -

I love a lot about this podcast removing the Scott Drew stuff. They talk about the people who compare IU hoops to Tennessee or Nebraska football being way off. They talk about people saying Baylor is a better job than IU being way off. They talk about Indiana still being a great job, several reasons why it's still a great job. Forde talks about going to the Baylor/Kansas game in Waco last year and how people talked about how great the atmosphere was, which he agreed, but emphatically said its nowhere near Assembly Hall when it's rockin. It was pretty refreshing to hear this to be honest. -

What is the appeal of Wes Miller? The only thing I really know about him is when UNC-G was left out of the tourney a couple years ago as what many though was the biggest snub. But a look at this resume shows 1 tourney appearance in 9 years and it took until year 6 before he had a winning record. He's a Tar Heel that wrote a book about his time there. He'd pull a Roy Williams and bolt for UNC in a heartbeat, and that job will be open in the not so distant future. -
