Honestly it’s just about positional understanding with JG, that really should be obvious to anyone critiquing his perimeter D. He started bball late, he came to IU still raw despite making big leaps in his game in NH and getting late recruiting bc of it. He has all the tools and i think everyone here agrees made big strides his soph year in positioning, defensive reads, and play around the basket/rebounding along with elite shot blocking. But perimeter D includes switches, understanding offensive sets initiated up top, reacting to inside out and p & r / p & p, and playing almost entirely the 4 for Race his lack of experience at the college wing showed —
But it’s crazy to me to talk about him as a poor perimeter defender without even bothering to note any of that. His lateral quickness, length, speed, defensive tenacity generally (exceptional), timing on blocks - including, hello, 3-pointers, is clear. A guy like Kopp has literally none of that, none. What Kopp has is experience on the wing for defensive reads. His effort also is good. But zero speed, athleticism, length, hops etc. On a Crean team JG would’ve gotten a ton of time early and i would bet a million it would’ve included wing play. So CAM was just awful, and Woodson required experience and proven defensive progress before real time, acknowledged that his assistants were yelling at him in a game to put JG in, and he then dominated, then later said in the tourney that he “discovered” a guy on his bench in JG and played him extensively (finally) and golly, JG was outstanding in the tourney. He is primed to have a major role as he should next season, and i’d bank on dominant offensive showings from him whether he’s playing a traditional 4 (would like to see that with Race) or on the “wing”

I keep seeing claims that JG wasn’t a 3 last year which is fine it’s true. But can we at least admit he has the raw athletic ability to do it? Which means he can be turned into one with 8 months of work.
This isn’t like Crean trying to use Morgan as a point forward JG is close he’s just got some stuff he needs to work on. And if he ever wants to go to the nba he’s going to need to work on those things. That can be a good motivator

I’m just like you on this one. Don’t want it to be Geronimo, Leal, Duncomb. I think I’d rather hold steady if players are wanting back. I could live with Kopp if he was ready to move along.
I’m hearing it won’t be Geronimo. I’d be pretty upset if it’s Leal. If it’s TJD, I’ll be bummed and wonder why we aren’t pushing hard for one of the 3-4 5’s in the transfer portal.

I agree with this 100%. Stack as much talent as possible 1-9 and have guys like Leal at the end of the bench helping to support the team and maintaining a positive culture. Recipe for success.

Well he can't coach and he can't recruit, so not much. :)

I don’t think we could have a better situation with the 13th scholarship, if that's what we're calling it, then Anthony Leal.
Local kid, works his butt off, plays incredibly hard when he gets in, moves the ball incredibly well when he plays, and literally never complains about playing time or anything.
It's infinitely better to have that, as opposed to a malcontent that pissed off about playing time on the end of the bench.

JG all day every day. You guys are crazy. Geronimo just needs minutes. He's about to explode.

But where is Dennis in the 10?
To me if he is slotted above Bates, JG, and Galloway, you are taking away minutes from guys who could be here for three more years and could use court time for a guy who would be here for one year and only offers a moderate upgrade. Defensively, Dennis is very, very good. Offensively, he's not.
IF the staff knows we have a player that is wanting to move on for whatever reason (which I think the two most likely candidates would be JG or Kopp), then bringing in Dennis or McNeil makes sense. Forcing out someone for a moderate upgrade doesn't make sense IMO. It's not that we are trading Leal's minutes for Dennis if Leal leaves because Leal isn't projected to get minutes anyway. Instead, Dennis would be coming in and getting minutes from Bates or someone that is already a rotational player.

I don’t understand the need to get rid of anyone at this point. You cannot have 13 guys that get minutes and players 11-13 will likely never get anything more than mop up time.
so 11-13 are the good teammates, the good practice players, the good for the program kids and Leal is all that. If Woodson needs more than 11 scholarships to construct a well rounded team than he is doing it wrong.
most of the top schools either don’t use all of their scholarships or have a few guys like Leal at the end of it

I don't think their win / loss record over that time backs that up. Duren was only out a few games and they won each one. They also lost to Georgia, Ole Miss, and Tulane early in the season while they had both Duren and Williams (and Bates).
Gelling over time/getting healthier probably also played a role, but while I didn't watch all their games, I think it's pretty likely they were better without Bates. In some of the early games I did watch him play, he had very little discipline in terms of shot selection and ball control. His Assist/TO ratio for the season was damn near 1/2.

Also some good news is both Malik & JHS will be here in June for both summer sessions and workouts with the whole team. I like when we start building that team chemistry in June.

I doubt the cheerleading squad will help all that much if the coaching staff burns bridges with Indiana high school coaches by running players like Leal off. There's a balance that must be maintained between doing anything/everything to win and taking care of players. I do wonder though if Leal would end up coming out way ahead with NIL deals if he decided to pay his own way. I don't think that is even remotely likely and I'm not sure it is even possible either.

JG is our 3. People talk about “3” “wing” skills when it comes to JG but refuses to say the same for Kopp who couldn’t dribble and chew gum at the same time

In addition He generally subbed for race I think mostly because that’s what we needed. Aside from the great Illinois knucklehead fiasco we tended to have guys for 1-3
