Tom Crean's postgame locker room speech
JSHoosier replied to Magnanimous's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We've already seen him have a 2 year run. I don't have any doubts he can have a year or two here or there. -
MSU and fans would probably assume Izzo had been kidnapped and an imposter was on the sideline.
-
I'm 29 and I want IU to win the BTT just to get rid of the goose egg, aside from that it'd be difficult to care less about it.
-
They should. Alford won't do it, but that doesn't mean they should lower the bar to something more achievable for him.
-
You may say that expectations are unrealistic. I say the program has everything a coach needs to win and win big, I say the only way we will ever get back to where we should be is to maintain the expectations of one of the best programs in CBB history because if we lower the bar once we can always find a way to do it again. I can't give him a pass for year 6 because he built that team, so the results should fall squarely on him. Year 3 underachieved as well. He has a resume of almost 20 years, with 3 conference titles and only one trip past the Sweet 16; if he were looking for a job now top programs wouldn't give him a second look. I've given him credit. There are things he does well, some he does extremely well. It's too soon to say he's changed when it comes to his weaknesses or that he's suddenly anything more than he's ever shown. We'll have to agree to disagree. You want to look at a handful of years and think he's a championship caliber coach, I look at a larger sample size and see nothing that says he is.
-
What coach though has accomplished as little as Tom Crean has in his nearly 20 year career, and he hasn't accomplished much, then suddenly put it all together? That's not a list that would include Cal or Boeheim as both were far more accomplished than Crean at that point. Is it possible, sure, but I'd have serious reservations about that. I happen to believe a sample size like that is pretty indicative of a coach's ability. He's shown he can do a good coaching job for a season or two, no one has alleged otherwise. That's not the problem and never has been. He's never sustained it though, that's the problem. That sample size tells us he has peaks and valleys with peaks that aren't very high, and it's going to take more than a season or two to prove that's changed. We can't really say if he has or not.

I've tried staying out of this thread, but now I have to say something. If anyone here "hates Tom Crean with a passion" it's a small minority. There is a very big difference between hating him and thinking he's not the right guy long term. I've been vocal that he's not the right guy, and my stance hasn't changed. Once year does nothing to change that because at this point I couldn't possibly care less about the results of one year. That doesn't mean I hate him.

Come On Lurkers & Newbies..... We Are Champions!
JSHoosier replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
He could be bad, but there were plenty of times when posters would bait him into posting and then want him gone when he responded. -
Eh, a 40 may not be that realistic anyway. Players don't run full speed in a straight line that often.

Darius Latham Declares for NFL Draft

An alternate UK logo. -
Uh, those players were booted because the coach did know what was going on.
-
If he didn't have any knowledge of what was happening in his program then he's an incompetent supervisor. I don't believe for one second that he didn't see Rose's cousin on the plane either. He's not stupid, he separates himself enough to have plausible deniability. Let's not forget the NCAA is entirely corrupt and just competent enough to sometimes be dangerous (while other times they couldn't find their @$$ with a mirror on a stick). Where there's smoke there is usually fire.
-
Obviously you wouldn't. Different people have different thought processes and priorities. Me? It wouldn't matter, if my dream job came calling and I had an out in my contract I would give it serious consideration. EDIT: Plus Bob Knight is unanimously considered one of the greatest coaches of all time and he didn't coach in the NBA, he turned down NBA opportunities when he was here IIRC.
-
Unless you're Brad or his family you don't know. Maybe you wouldn't, but you can't say for certain what his thought process would be when presented with what was, at least at one point, his dream job that he supposedly has an out for in his contract. I'm not saying he would, I'm saying no one can say for certain one way or another except for a select group.
-
My point was thought that we can't really put together a list of "legitimate replacements", that's why one isn't presented.
-
It's not exactly easy to make a list of legitimate hires because no one here knows for certain if a coach would or wouldn't be interested; it's just speculation. It's easy to sit back and say coach a or b wouldn't be interested for reasons c or d; and if you were in their position maybe you wouldn't, but your thought process may not be the same as theirs. It's really easy to say "Stevens wouldn't be interested because he's in the NBA" and maybe you or another person wouldn't be in his situation; we do know this was his dream job, at least at one point, maybe it wouldn't matter to you but you can't say it wouldn't to him plus there's supposedly an out built into his contract for this job. We can't say for certain one way or the other unless we're them.
-
As has already been said Crean is a boom or bust coach where the booms don't win big and the busts aren't bad enough where people can't find reasons to keep him. Some may be okay with that, I'm not; he's here to win big and if he's not going to (which there is absolutely nothing to say he will) then he can go. It's always been that way with him and until he actually proves otherwise, and one season doesn't do that, he still is.
-
That many free throws and the team has so few points to show for it. Man, he REALLY need to work on his FT shooting.
-
Scored 52 and her team still lost by 8, 114-106.
-
That's another way of phrasing it, yes.
-
I don't think anyone has ever claimed he's a bad coach, he's not. He has times where he looks good, but on the whole he's not particularly good. He's been better this year, but I couldn't possibly care less about one season and he's shown he can be good for one season here or there just not sustain it. He's not a coach that's going to lose big, but he's not a coach that's going to win big either.
-
My feelings on the coach are known so I'm not getting into that right now, and I think I've been consistent saying I don't care about one game or season at this point so I'm not getting into that either. My post didn't really didn't even have anything to do with Crean aside from a quote in my signature.
-
You obviously don't know much about my posting history if you think I've never said anything good.
-
I hate the "we won, who cares" mentality. See the signature, you do not accept in victory what you would not accept in defeat.
-
There is literally not a word in that tweet saying IU/Knight recruited the wrong player.
