With other sports I think he has. With men's basketball he just pays lip service to having expectations without actually having any IMO.

What would be on your IU Basketball Bucket List?
JSHoosier replied to IndyHutch's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
That would mean puke won enough games to get there. Forget that, I want to see them lose every game by 70 digits. Then get caught cheating, again, get the death penalty, again, and have every one of their wins on history stricken from the books. -
Recruiting opportunities, funding, and all that is different. However, the results so far really aren't any different. The complaints by the fan base aren't any different. He didn't build on his one year run at Marquette, but despite having better resources he didn't build on success here. The parallels are there, and to me it doesn't make sense to dismiss them or pretend they're just being fabricated. The most a person will ever get me to go for "freebies" is 2 years, year 3 should've been better than 12 wins.
-
I'm not basing anything solely on his time at Marquette, but I do believe it should be factored in. Branch McCracken didn't finish below 2nd until his 7th year at IU, and he won a national title in his second. Bob Knight finished below 3rd once in his first 7 years here with an Elite 8, two Final Fours and a national title thrown in. Admittedly, neither coach walked into what Crean did although we weren't spotless when RMK came in. I'm not looking just at his Marquette tenure, but I'm not pretending it didn't happen either. I'm looking at both and seeing more of a continuance than an improvement, and that shouldn't be good enough at IU since he hasn't won much of anything. I didn't say anything about doing better when we hired him, but I do believe we can do better now. I was as ecstatic as anyone when he was first hired, but at this point he's lost me too much for one season or a string of games mostly against bad teams to do anything to change my opinion. He's been a head coach for 17 seasons and he's much closer to being Mike Davis than he is Branch McCracken or Bob Knight.
-
I don't see how we can just ignore his time at Marquette, especially not when their fans had the same complaints we do now. He didn't just start coaching when he got to Indiana. He had almost a decades worth of evidence of his ability, and the results here are about the same.
-
If we were okay with Crean's resume we could've kept Mike Davis, they are eerily similar. You can say he went to a Final Four, which is true, but he's done nothing but wallow in mediocrity for the overwhelming majority of 17 seasons as a head coach. That Final Four was also 13 years ago and he's done nothing to make it seem like anything other than a fluke.
-
Must be great to be mediocre at your job while getting paid 3+ million, and not be held accountable. Where the hell can I sign up for a gig like that?

Boeheim isn't a good comparison. He at least shared his conference title 7 times, finished higher than 4th or better in his conference 20 times, and made Sweet 16 or better 8 times (only counting his time in the Big East, another 2 as an independent). There was plenty to go on to say he may put it together eventually.

For that matter 3 straight isn't enough with a coach that's never won much of anything?

Wbb vs #5 Maryland 1/30 @ 2 pm EST
JSHoosier replied to mamasa's topic in Indiana Women's Basketball
An elite program puts that kind of team on the floor on a regular basis, not just one year. I'd love to see it happen, but I'm doubtful. For IUWBB to take the next step they need to land more players the caliber of a Tyra Buss, not just land a Tyra Buss and hope some of the lower caliber players pan out. You need to land a player the caliber of Tyra Buss and a year or two later land another player of a similar caliber to pair with her, it's why I wanted to land Jackie Young. Indiana and the surrounding states produces enough talent to do that, but it's very difficult to convince the good ones to come to a doormat program with no history on a regular basis. Team's like UCONN pull in multiple players as good as Buss, or better, on a regular basis (the WNBA is littered with UCONN products) and having a coach like Auriemma helps. -
Hey I'm impressed, one of the posters in the first thread properly used and spelled naivete. He obviously didn't actually attend UK.

And Troy would be pulling splinters out of his *** for a month. And probably a shoe. -

The only almost is that we almost lost to an awful team. It's completely embarrassing. A coworker had tickets to the game so he got to see that crap show in person. I feel sorry for him. -
Crean had better be doing cartwheels that Minnesota sucks.

Article on recruits from McCarthy

Frankly, he should have to keep Priller on the team until he graduates. He took a Southland Conference caliber player because he was in full on desperation mode, so he should have to deal with it now. -

Eh, that announcer got confused then. As soon as the whistle blew there was a ref signaling a foul, who was in good position to see the play. -

I wouldn't call it bad luck, at this point in his career the luck will most likely balance out. -
IUWBB - Rutgers @ IU on 1/27

Buss only turned it over twice, albeit to just 3 assists. She was also a mere 2-7 on non-3 PT FGs. -

We had our chances and blew it, we really didn't deserve the win. Lets not act like we weren't on the receiving end of questionable calls in AH. Oh look, Troy was out of control again; a junior that still plays like a freshman. -

Fortunately she's just a sophomore. She needs to work on taking care of the ball and her shot. -

Going by the stats I saw it looked like Buss had 6 of those TOs. Ouch. Looked like she had a double double, but she still has work to do. -
Simply put, yes. The best team we've played in this stretch is Notre Dame. Rutgers (6-14, 0-7) Minnesota (6-14, 0-8) Illinois (10-10, 2-5) That's 3 B1G teams that downright suck. And none of the others we've beaten are anything to write home about. We're playing better, but the argument that we haven't played anyone is completely valid and shouldn't just be dismissed like it is.

Don't take my post as some sort of endorsement of Calipari, it's not meant that way at all. I merely stated that Cal accomplished more before he got to UK than Crean ever has, and it's an undeniable fact even discounting the vacated seasons. He's a cheating bucket of filth, but he's strictly looking at his resume he's pretty darn accomplished too.
-
He won his conference 7 times and tied for an 8 and only finished below t-3rd 3 times. 4 Sweet 16 appearances and 3 Elite 8 appearances. That's excluding his vacated seasons.
