  24. I can understand basketball officials who get intimidated by raucous crowds and favor the home team.      Football, somewhat, but not to the same extent.      Biased umpires are the lowest form of scum.

Box Score (UIC) • Highlights (UIC Game) • Photo Gallery (UIC) Box Score (Toledo) BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team made the most of its home opening weekend this afternoon, as the Hoosiers swept in their first day of the Hoosier Classic at Andy Mohr Field, defeating Illinois-Chicago before upending Toledo, 5-2. Indiana has now won five consecutive contests, improving its overall mark to 7-16-1. The pitching staff prevailed throughout the afternoon, posting a collaborative 1.50 earned run average through two games and combined for 15 strikeouts, which included Meaghan Murphy's season-high eight against Toledo. At the plate, the Hoosiers were led by Kassi Farmer's .500 clip fueled by a multi-homerun performance against the Rockets. Her two round-trippers represent the second multiple-homerun effort on the season (her first against San Jose State on Feb. 8, 2014) and make her just one of three IU players to earn more than one multi-homerun game in their respective careers. Amanda Wagner (2010-13) andSara Olson (2009-11) are the only other Hoosier softball players to do so during their time at Indiana. INDIANA 4, ILLINOIS-CHICAGO 1 The Hoosiers outhit the Flames 5-4 in Indiana's 4-1 victory over UIC. Brianna Meyer, Jenna Abraham, Shelby Gogreve and Erin Lehman all registered hits against UIC's pitching staff, but it would be Lehman's bases loaded triple in the fourth that would be the difference maker for the Cream and Crimson.   Lora Olson started in the circle for the Hoosiers and tossed the first five innings where she allowed just one run on five hits while striking out three. Brooke Boetjer closed out the final frame to pick up her second save of the year.   After a scoreless three innings, Lehman's triple would put the Hoosiers ahead in the bottom of the fourth.Kassi Farmer, Kelsey Dotson and Gogreve drew walks to load up the bases for Lehman. The freshman did not disappoint, driving a three-run triple into right-center field to give IU a 3-0 lead. Meyer's lone single of the contest followed and drove in Lehman for the Hoosiers' fourth run of the ballgame. The Flames answered with a solo homerun in the top of sixth, but Indiana would not relinquish the lead and closed out the contest with a 4-1 win. INDIANA 5, TOLEDO 2 Despite being outhit 11-7 by the Rockets, the Hoosiers used timely hitting united with effective pitching to work its way to a 5-2 victory over Toledo The Hoosiers connected on seven hits in their final game of the day, highlighted by a 2-for-3, two-homerun showing by Farmer. Both of which were of the solo variety, helping her to a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Saucedo also touched for a pair of singles, drove in a run and stole two bases, while Meyer Dotson and Lehman contributed with one hit each. Murphy fanned eight Toledo batters, matching her season high against  Georgia Tech in the Panther Invitational on Feb. 15. The lefty threw the first 5.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs to cross before handing the reigns to Boetjer. Boetjer completed the remaining two innings and struck out the side in the seventh to seal the win for Indiana. Farmers first of two homers sparked a three-run inning for Indiana in the second. Her shot over the centerfield fence was soon followed by a Toledo error and an RBI-single from Saucedo that led to another pair of Hoosier runs. Another homerun by Farmer increased the Indiana lead to 4-0 in the third, but Toledo erased that shot with an RBI-single in the top of the fifth to cut the home team's lead back down to three. Indiana scored once more in the following frame. After Meyer reached on a single, Natalie Lalich laid down the sacrifice bunt. Meyer recognized the lack of coverage at third and advanced two bases on the play. The throw to get her sliding into third was off the mark, allowing Meyer to score and reclaim an IU four-run lead. Boetjer entered in the sixth and quickly worked through the final inning, striking out the side to help Indiana clinch its fifth straight win. The Hoosiers will continue action at the Hoosier Classic tomorrow  where they were originally slated to play one game against Wright State at 4:45 p.m. IU has now added another game on Saturday where they will play UIC at 6:30 p.m. Live stats and live audio will be available for each of those games. http://www.iuhoosiers.com/sports/w-softbl/recaps/031414aac.html
