Class of '66 Old Fart Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 Gilliland Wins Platform National Championship The No. 15-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team closed out the 2020-21 collegiate season with a 15th place finish and 102 team points at the 2021 NCAA Championships on Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. IU has finished inside the top-15 finish of the team standings in 13-straight seasons. A total of 10 Hoosiers claimed 20 All-American honors, including four first-team honors and a national champion. PLATFORM DIVING Freshman Tarrin Gilliland won the 2021 NCAA Championship in the Platform Dive with a career-best mark of 338.40. After hitting a 45.60 on her first attempt, Gilliland locked in to rip 76.50, 67.50, 76.80, and 72.00 on her final four dives to claim the individual championship. Her performance ranks her as the 10th-best performer in the history of the event. She is the third Hoosier woman to win the event in program history, joining Cassandra Cardinell (2005) and Jessica Parratto (2015). She also gives Indiana four medals since the 2015 championships: 2021 – Tarrin Gilliland (Gold) 2019 – Jessica Parratto (Bronze) 2017 – Jessica Parratto (Silver) 2015 – Jessica Parratto (Gold) The Midland, Texas, native extends the Indiana's Big Ten record with an individual title in seven-straight NCAA Championships. Lilly King claimed eight breaststroke titles from 2016-19, Jessica Parratto won the Platform in 2015, and Brooklyn Snodgrass won the 200 Backstroke in 2014. 200 BREASTSTROKE Junior Noelle Peplowski earned First Team All-America status with a sixth-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke with a career-best time of 2:06.46. Her mark earned her a 17th-place finish in the event, just missing out on her third All-America honor of the weekend. In her opening 1,000 yards, Grote set a new personal best with a split of 9:52.21. Both her 1,000 split and 1,650 time rank her inside the top-15 on the all-time performer list. Junior Maggie Wallace placed 39th in the mile with a time of 16:35.50. 400 FREESTYLE RELAY The Hoosier relay team consisting of sophomore Ashley Turak, freshman Elizabeth Broshears, senior Abby Kirkpatrick, and senior Laurel Eiber finished 14th with a time of 3:15.20, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors for all four swimmers. The time turned in by Indiana marked the second-fastest time in program history. The leadoff 100 from Turak was clocked at 48.56, a new career-best mark. A lot of the qualifying swimmers are juniors or underclassmen so they will be back next season so they should continue to be good. Do the COVID eligibility rules apply to swimming? I would assume yes but I don't know. Seniors: Grote, Eiber, Kirkpatrick, Kovac. They're in a tight group of 4 teams separated by less than 10 points on the psych sheets so they could easily finish as high as 6th (5th looks out of reach) or as low as 9th. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 – With one day of finals complete at the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, No. 9 Indiana sits in ninth place with 18 team points at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. In the lone event of the evening, the Hoosier 800 Freestyle Relay team of freshman Tomer Frankel, junior Van Mathias, sophomore Brendan Burns, and junior Jack Franzman placed ninth overall with a time of 6:14.68. The time ranks as the sixth quickest time in program history. The Hoosiers dropped 1.44 seconds from their entry seed time and were the top finishing Big Ten Conference team, topping the times set by Michigan (6:15.54, 11th place), Ohio State (6:16.63, 14th place), and Wisconsin (6:19.34, 17th place). The lead off split of 1:32.98 from Frankel marked a career-best time in the 200 Freestyle and ranks him as the fourth-fastest performer in the history of the event at Indiana. go iu bb Posted March 25, 2021 Posted March 25, 2021 (edited) IU beat its seed time by 1.44 seconds and its seed by score by 6 points (2 spots from 11th to 9th). Right now it looks like they have a good shot at finishing 6th. Their main competition for that position are Texas A&M, Michigan, and OSU who lost 2, 12, and 8 points from their seeds, respectively. So a good start for IU. I can't take credit for it, swimswam is a good source for info and they do a really good job of covering the sport. BTW, I compared the predicted scores from the most recent link to an earlier. It doesn't take in to account diving. So swimming points only and IU has a really good chance at 6th place. IU should score points in diving from Capobianco. The 800 relay seemed like a pretty solid performance. There were 2 Fr and no Srs on the team and no one qualified in the individual event unless I missed someone. There were also no seniors on either relay as @BeerBQ pointed out for the 800 free relay. IU expected to outscore them by 18 in swimming events, including 1650. T A&M (31 points behind) had 1 up and 1 down. Also no divers. IU expected to outscore them by 21 in swimming events, including 1650. NC State (38 points behind) has 3 1650 swimmers (1 up and 2 down). No divers. They're expected to outscore IU by only 6 points in the 1650. Virginia (56 points behind) has 1 up and 3 down. Expected to score 30 points from swimming.
