Walking Boot of Doom

Government and Sports

In fairness, nothing good can come from the NCAA system as it exists. The writing is on the wall that the organization needs to drastically change to survive. Not that the White House needs to get involved though...unless the NCAA is a Government agency...which would explain the corruption.

Agree 100%. No way it can continue on its current path. It has done very little to adjust to the changing student-athlete environment, but the White House involving itself is absurd. Don't try to tell me it's because of the importance of college education either. There are much more pressing educational matters that effect a much larger group of students for the government to address.

the United States Government...

let's let that sink in for a moment...
what should they be concerned with?

ISIS
Al Qeada
Oil Production
Russian involvement in Europe
Cuba...

College Athletics should be somewhere around 475,852 on the list of Government issues...

Right behind creating toilet stalls that don't have gaps between the door and the wall large enough to make eye contact with someone as they walk by. How are we in the 21st century still having to deal with that kind of indecency?

So I actually started reading the article a little bit closer and came across a few points that make this collaboration (somewhat) valid-

A targeted piece of discussion is one the administration's domestic focuses (sexual assault on campuses).

"...discussion about...a campaign against sexual violence on college campuses in which the NCAA and several major conferences were partnering with the White House."

It's not too difficult to make the leap that they are displeased with the very public cases of sexual misconduct by college athletes; specifically the way they've gotten swept under the rug.

Further, other topics of discussion cover the state of Athlete Academics (think the North Carolina scandel), the guaruntee of scholarship and medical benefits, and the state of amateurism. Getting the Fed involved is probably a move to help them navigate the potential, difficult legal issues that will come with addressing all three of these. It also seems like this is more of a move of convenience (all the right people are in the right place, might as well meet).

Basically this is a lot less sinister and big-brotherish than it seems.

If Congress spends LOTS of time investigating this, it may fill too much of their time to allow them to address other issues.

And that's okay!

Congress actually said "Nah Brah (the White House), you got this."

The newest college sport, Obamaball

@DanWolken: Breaking: College athletics officials to meet with White House, announce coalition to "save" college sports http://t.co/c3wPiMG57e

I am sure paying the players will be an outcome of this. The fairness issue will come up. Did anyone ever find out how Obama paid for his education?

the bottom line is.....the U.S. Government has NO business in this matter.

The NCAA is under fire in the judicial system.  Between the O'Bannon case and the push for unionization the courts will be forced to hear cases on the matter of student-athlete rights more and more until there is some sort of legislative ruling on how the NCAA is able to operate as a not-for-profit.  So we can either get that process started on the legislative side or continue to have court proceedings on the matter that are extremely costly to all taxpayers.

Also, the US Government does have business in this matter as every NCAA institution accepts federal funds and grants.

Bringing key stakeholders together to discuss the topic as the White House is doing seems to me to be a step in the right direction.
