Emmanuel Mudiay

Wow. That would be really really hard to turn down as a senior coming out of high school. I know this option has always been on the table for these kids but I could see this opening the flood gates.

Eh, people thought Brandon Jennings was going to open the flood gates to kids going the overseas route, though his was because he couldn't get academically eligible. The only notable since then to go the overseas route besides Mudiay now was Jeremy Tyler who turned out to be at least a partial failure so far for him.

There's also an advantage to staying home, in terms of marketing/sponsorship dollars. While Mudiay will make more this year, he may be less marketable in the U.S. Over the next couple years. The NCAA Tournament does wonders for a lot of these guys in terms of marketing and brand development.

China is huge though. When we were there 7 years ago the locals we met who were into basketball loved Kobe. If he can embrace the culture they might start to think of him as their own. Might lose some marketing here but if he gains some there who knows. Plus $1.2 plus a shoe deal in the bank for year one vs 1 year college degree. Sign me up too.

Very good point. Completely forgot about what it could mean for it erratic all marketing, especially China. There's been a big push to market NBA players in China over recent years. It's a big reason why players like Kobe and LeBron make so much more than someone like Wade.

Doesn't Wade have a shoe deal in China?

He might. I forget the comparison, but I saw something where it compared the money LeBron and Kobe make compared to another superstar player, and the difference was deals LeBron and Kobe had in China. I thought it was Wade, but maybe it was someone else.

I honestly would be extremely hard pressed not to be one and done and not go make 1.2 Million + shoe deal ect. Props to him for making it happen.

NCAA reform is just one special group of kids away from overhauling change. Get the top 20-25 kids in one class and all make a deal to all go overseas and make 7 figures for a year or two before NBA. Not bad for an 18/19 yr old.

I agree mostly. Although Mudiay is top 3 talent. That is why the pay is so high. Guys in the 10-25 range wouldn't get that type of money, although I'm sure they'd do okay. Top 10 kids for sure.
