Coach Cal

Recommended Posts

It would be tough to not want to be in the Final Four almost every year, the question is how you do so without the baggage. In Florida you saw a starting line up of mostly Seniors, coached by a guy that seems to operate in the "right" way. In UConn you saw one really determined, highly skilled mix of Seniors, Juniors and others and although Callahan got in some scrapes(remember they were banned from the tournament last year) basically a program that has been high performing mix of players. I'd prefer the Florida method recruiting in state,(most of those guys were Floridians)  with a tough coach who knows how to take advantage of the teams strengths and expose the weakness in the opponent. Cal will be gone sooner or later, the NBA will offer too much money and he will get GREEDY!

I don't think being well liked is that big of a deal, honestly.  There were a lot of people that didn't like Bob Knight and he's one of the best coaches in NCAA history.

Back then yeah, but I will disagree now.  You can still run a program but elite level players don't want to play for someone like that.  The closest one resembling Knight now would be Martin from South Carolina and well it's South Carolina.

I don't blame Cal that some players only play one year and leave. If you go back and look at the players recruited by Indiana, few, really fit the mold of superstar. Isiah Thomas would be one of the exceptions. Indiana has a tradition of recruiting student athletes who have jelled together to form a team. I don't blame Crean that Vonleh left after one season, Zeller left after only two seasons and Oladipo left after three seasons. I blame that on the NCAA for allowing players to leave after only one year. The NBA should have to recruit them out of high school or only after three years like in baseball.

The problem as I see it is that we are not able to recruit top Indiana high school players like was done in the past. Where we got one superstar each of the last two years, Kentucky and the other elite programs are getting three or four. Look at Michigan and Michigan State and notice how many top Indiana high school players they have on their teams.

The whining about one and done programs is just sour grapes. We need to recruit more quality players and coach them better.
