Larry McDaniel Named New DL Coach

Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson announced Tuesday that Larry McDaniel will serve as the program's defensive line coach. McDaniel has spent the last three years as the defensive line coach at Bowling Green State University.

 

"Larry is a very impressive coach and has always been on our radar," Wilson said. "He is a former Hoosier captain, graduate assistant and Kelly School of Business alum. Larry has coached the MAC Defensive Player of the Year two of the last four seasons. His linemen are always fundamentally sound, physical and well coached. Larry is a great fit for what we want to accomplish on defense and we welcome him, his wife Arlena, and their three children to Indiana."

 

McDaniel was a four-year starter (1989-92) at nose guard and a senior captain with the Hoosiers. He graduated in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in business management.

 

"I am so happy Coach Wilson reached out to me and gave me this opportunity," McDaniel said. "It's a thrill to come back to Indiana University. Where I am in the coaching industry is a direct result of what I learned from my mentors at IU. Coach Bill Mallory was instrumental in my development as a coach and a man. To have the chance to give that knowledge back to these young men at Indiana is a dream come true."

 

Bowling Green won the 2013 MAC Championship, played in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl and went 10-4. The Falcons defense recorded 30 sacks, led by defensive tackle Ted Ouellet's 6.5. Ouellet added 32 tackles, eight tackles for loss and seven quarterback hurries en route to second team all-conference honors.

 

McDaniel's defensive line was one of the strongest and deepest units in the MAC, holding opponents to a league-best 150.6 yards per game on the ground.

 

In 2012, Bowling Green finished 10th in the country with 38 sacks. Defensive tackle Chris Jones was eighth in the country with 12.5 sacks and tied for 11th with 19 tackles for loss.

 

Jones was drafted by the New England Patriots and made 61 tackles and seven sacks in 13 starts as a rookie. He (first team) and Ouellet (third team) both earned a spot on the 2012 All-MAC team. Jones was also a first team All-America selection by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

In McDaniel's first season with BGSU, Jones led the MAC with 8.5 sacks, and earned first team all-league honors, adding 14.0 tackles for loss. In all, the front four had 16 sacks.

 

Prior to his stint with the Falcons, McDaniel spent eight seasons at Kent State (2003-10), four at Ball State (1999-2003), one at Southwest Missouri State (1998) and one as a graduate assistant at Indiana (1997).

 

McDaniel helped coach Roosevelt Nix to the 2010 MAC Defensive Player of the Year Award, the first freshman in conference history to win the honor. Nix went on to be named a first team Freshman All-American by Sporting News, Rivals.com, Phil Steele, CollegeFootballNews.com and the Football Writers Association of America.

 

The Kent State defense finished third in points allowed (22.9) and first in total yards (306.7), while recording a school record 35 sacks (KSU had 33 sacks in 2009).

 

McDaniel coached the defensive tackles in his first two seasons at Ball State, then assumed responsibility for the entire defensive line his final two years. The Cardinals were MAC West Division tri-champions in 2001.

 

At Southwest Missouri State University, McDaniel tutored the tight ends and was the assistant recruiting coordinator. He worked as a graduate assistant at IU in 1997 after he served as an assistant strength coach at the school the previous summer.

 

A native of St. Louis, Mo., McDaniel was in private business for four years before joining the coaching ranks at his alma mater.

 

He and his wife, Arlena, have two daughters, Lauren and Shelby, and a son, Mac.

One correction to the article.  Jones was not drafted by the Patriots.  He was drafted in the 6th round by Houston, and released.  Then he signed with Tampa Bay, and was released.  He was claimed off waivers by the Patriots.
