New Handchecking Rules

Recommended Posts

Hey all, new to the site.

Obviously, coaches everywhere are extremely frustrated with the new handchecking rules. It's going to change the way college basketball is played for the worst. It's going to hurt some teams more than others. I think that this rule will help teams with length, athleticism, and great on ball defense. Guards who can't move their feet are going to be the most effective as we enter this area of supposedly non physical play. I can't help but wonder if this new rule only benefits the Hoosiers defensively in comparison with other schools. Could are defense actually be the deciding factor in our season? Is our defense the identity that Crean is looking for? I realize that it was just an exhibition against Hillsdale, but I thought the on ball defense for the Hoosiers was absolutely incredible. Not only that, when a shooter had a window, it was quickly closed by a Hoosier flying out with a long arm in their face. This team is long, athletic, and can gain offensive momentum through fundamental defense. Has anyone else been impressed with the D this year?

No hand checking, and just like that Aaron Craft lost DPOY.

I hope the new rules don't cause refs to call a foul for every little bit of contact.  I'm fine with keeping a team from basing their defense around not getting arrested for mugging (I'm looking at you, Grinch), but I don't want defenders not being allowed to be physical at all.

I'm all in favor of the new emphasis on calling hand checking.  The game has become WAY too physical imo.  I just hope the hand check is being called as consistently in February and March as it is in November.

In theory, yes this new emphasis should benefit us. Physically we will be able to play D with our feet due to our length and athleticism.  I'm sure since they are so young CTC would tell you they still have a lot to learn about positioning and such.

I really believe that how good this team is or is not this year comes down to how good they are or are not defensively.

All for the rule. I would also like to see a emphasis on calling fouls on offensive players who are using physical force to establish position in the lane, or to get position for a shot. I don't want to see the game turned into a bunch of marshmallows floating around each other, but I do think that it is supposed to be a finesse game first and physical second.
