Newton giving some big minutes! Also your game summary neglects to mention that First Team Fake Tough Mason Gillis probably did something obnoxious that had a bigger impact on the game than any Actual Basketball he played

Fletcher Loyer was the key, as he shot what was probably a season high 41%.  ;)

What info and criteria does this simulator use. I would think doing this for college basketball would be really difficult. With so much turnover from year to year you don't have much info to go on

It's definitely crude estimations, but Torvik does a pretty good job of provided ballpark estimations.  I translate those numbers into projected individual numbers.  PC Stellar uses Sagarin ratings to level out scheduling differences -- i.e., a team with great stats but a horrible schedule will have a lower sagarin rating and will adjust the stats downward.

I have a spreadsheet (at this point it has about 60 sheets on it I believe of projections of the ten man rotations on every team) in which I took last year's stats and Torvik's projected minutes played + improvement/regression that the player is supposed to have in every category.  Freshman are a little different since they don't have a past statistical history to go on.  In their case, I take the aggregate of the five most comparable incoming freshman from 2022 and what they did as freshman (in some cases I have to go to 2021 if there are enough with good comps).  I look for five players that:  1.  play the same position;  2.  have the same relative size; 3.  were ranked close in 2022 to where the current freshman is ranked.  It's imperfect but it does provide a reasonable expectation of the player.

While it's imperfect, I try to have players ranked within ten above or ten below the freshman recruit.  If there aren't enough players at a spot -- for instance, if I have a 6'4" shooting guard ranked 50th but in 2022 there were only 3 comparable SG near the same size and ranked between 40 and 60, I would throw in one point guard and one small forward that were an inch or two within 6'4" to balance each other out.

Game 21:  Michigan State at Indiana.

Heartbreaking loss for the Hoosiers.  Trailing by 4 to 7 most of the second half, IU came back to tie it with just over a minute left.  WIth 37 seconds left in a tie game, IU had a chance to run the clock inside ten and get a shot....instead, they turned the ball over.  A Walker three with eight seconds left gave the Spartans an 84-81 lead.  Ke'lel Ware traveled before he could get a tying shot up and the Spartans won 84-81.   IU drops to 14-7 and 6-4 in conference.

Game 22:  IU at Michigan

IU plays a soild first half and goes into the break up 39-29.  Michigan mounts a solid charge and takes a 46-44 lead only to see IU go on a nice run to go up 69-59 with four minutes left.  That would be all IU would score for the rest of regulation as Michigan closed on a 10-0 run to send it to overtime.

In OT, Trey Galloway hit a shot with a minute left to put IU up 74-73.  The teams exchanged misses until Terrance Williams hit a shot at the buzzer to pull out Indiana's heart as the Wolverines won 75-74.  IU suffers their third straight loss and falls to 14-8 and 6-5 in conference.

Game 22:  Northwestern at Indiana

In a game that IU controlled three-fourths of the way, IU squandered their lead and found themselves in a tight one but were able to pull it out.  It was little used Jakai Newton playing the heroics, who entered the game with under a minute left after Trey Galloway fouled out and Gabe Cupps had proved ineffective.  Newton only played three minutes and made one field goal, but it was a big one as it clenched the game for IU in an 80-76 win.  IU is now 15-8 and 7-5 in conference.

Northwestern stats:  26/62 fg (42%), 7/27 threes (26%), 17/24 ft (71%), 34 reb, 21 fouls, 13 ast, 6 st, 3 bs, 13 to, 76 pts

Game 23 not 22...typo.

These sims make me wonder what really will happen in the coming season.  Still too many unknowns.  Even just before tipoffs of each game there are a lot of unknowns, of course.

What is the reasoning that XJ shot 2/13? (And then he gets 9/9 FT...)  NW Defense at the PG?

Cupps 0/5?  Walker 0/2?

I wonder, what is someone to make of this sim season?

I noticed you don't have Gunn in the lineup and I feel he will be a key contributor to this year's team

Pc stellar limits teams to 10 man rosters.  In the case of Gunn, using Torvik ratings and expected improvement hid three point shooting percentage would still be so low to render him unplayable.  While I certainly think that last years shooting as a fluke, going on what has been established in game play last year doesn’t make him very good.

iMO, I also think at best he’s the 10th man in the rotation and will not be a big factor this year.
