Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Hoosiers lost 8-6 in 10 innings Gilley was pulled in the 6th after getting an out and giving up a double. Grable came in and the game collapsed as Xavier scored a total of 4 runs. Yarberry and Kraft also saw mound duty but everyone not named Gilley gave up 7 hits and 6 runs. We managed 8 hits and Oliver had 4 RBI that included a 3-run HR. We were sloppy and committed 4 errors and left 13 men on base. Quote
JaybobHoosier Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Hoping to watch some more games this year. Hope the boys pick it up and get it together. Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Down 0-4 in a hurry. Couldn’t draw up a worse start. But, still time to rebound in this one. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners Quote

Didn't get any better. Final score 6-0 as we got a grand total of 1 hit. 5 IU pitchers gave up 11 hits and we're 0-3 on the weekend and hopefully can salvage at least win tomorrow at noon in a re-match with UNLV. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Helluva way to start the season 0-4. UNLV got its second win of the weekend over us today 13-12 in 10 innings. We used 9 different pitchers and collectively gave up 14 hits; 6 BB; 1 WP and 2 HBP. Decker-Petty started and didn't make it past the 3rd inning when UNLV scored its first 4 runs. We had 10 hits of our own Hanley with 3 and Dickerson with 2. Taylor, Dickerson & Brenczewski each had RBI. We left 10 on base. Wednesday we're supposed to play Purdue Fort Wayne in Bloomington but considering the current weather forecast projects a temperature of 22 degrees at 4:00 I'd say that game looks pretty doubtful. Next weekend we'll be in Cary, NC for a 3-game series against Northwestern, Fordham and Harvard. Quote

Aaron Posted February 18 Posted February 18 I am going to say this very calmly: This team will likely take half a season to figure out their pitching but once they do, they will take off and get into a Regional. The question is not if but when this will happen. My issue is much like with soccer, it cannot keep taking half a season to figure things out as it cost you seeding in the postseason. Instead of a favorable draw to the College Cup and College World Series you end up with the hardest path possible. There is a ton of talent and it does not need to be this way but its also why they figure it out eventually. Instead of clamoring for firing the coaches, their needs to be scrutiny from fans and athletic administration of why this is happening, but also grateful it gets figured out. In five seasons, Mercer has three NCAA Tournaments, a Big Ten title (and no, the last coach was worse, so it wasn't simply babysitting the previous administration's players when it happened), one missed tourney by a game, and one dud of a season. If Woodson had has this same success, we would still not be thrilled but also its livable. The Big Ten in baseball is essentially a very high end Mid-Major similar to the Atlantic 10 and IU has had more consistent success then any other program in the conference. Mercer is not perfect but he has also had a reasonable amount of success Woodson could only dream of. It is an issue with both Men's Soccer and Baseball, that it takes half a season to play well and then team takes off as will almost certainly happen again. The slow starts have to be fixed. Period. Otherwise, things are nowhere near Woodson's level. The issue as I have talked about on a women's basketball discussion, is fans have to stop considering every season where team starts slow or is not top 10-15 in the country a failure. These programs outside of men's basketball will not sustain solid success (and yes this includes a likely coming eight win football team yearly), if fans keep considering postseason appearances and not always being ranked a failure and this is a huge issue. Slow starts must be addressed and fixed, but the fanbase needs to look in the mirror and address thinking every season where a team makes postseason but is not ranked, a "failure" or "disappointing" as I see far to often. gfeltner28, ALASKA HOOSIER, JerryYeagley23 and 1 other 4 Quote

Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 23 Posted February 23 A win is a win but I'm not sure we really know much more about this year's team. Final score 15-2 in a rout of Fordham. We pounded out 12 hits but Fordham pitchers walked 14 and hit 5 so putting runners on the bases wasn't particularly difficult. 4 IU batters each with 4 hits. Dickerson had 4 RBI followed by Oliver with 3 and Wiggins with 2. We left 16 on base. Seebold started and pitched 6 innings and allowed just 2 hits and walked 2. Rushing and Telfer each pitched an inning and Koskie and Thomas closed out the 9th. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Hoosiers rolled Harvard 14-4 for our second win of the season. Brenczewski had 4 hits; Taylor and Dickerson each with 3. Dickerson 5 RBI and Taylor with 4. Gilley started and went 5 innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 1 BB striking out 7. Benes, Gubitosi & Yarberry finished up pitching duty. On Monday, we face Northwestern at 11:00 am and Tuesday afternoon we're back in Bloomington to host Xavier. WayneFleekHoosier 1 Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 24 Posted February 24 2-1 Northwestern leads after 4 complete. Hoosiers spotted Northwestern a run in the 1st and a run in the 2nd. Hoosiers batting in the bottom of the 4th. We got 1 run back but left the bases loaded. Pete Haas started and went 2 innings allowing 2 hits (both extra bases) and 2 runs. Buhr pitched the 3rd and 4th allowing 1 hit and a walk and stayed on the mound for the 5th. Haas started against Oregon State on the 16th and only made it through 3 innings allowing 6 hits (1-HR) and 4 runs. Quote

CSP Posted February 24 Author Posted February 24 Big weekend sweep. Only 8 earned runs all weekend. Xavier on Wednesday at home Quote
Aaron Posted February 24 Posted February 24 So far pitching for the most part has been much improved from previous seasons in the early going which is a positive. This offense though needs to be better given the talent and hopefully they heat up as the weather gets warmer. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Final score 4-3 as we score the winning run in the bottom of the 9th on a Schuyler RBI single. We had 12 hits on the day. Dickerson and Wiggins each with 3 and Brenczewski and Hanley 2 apiece. We did leave 11 on base. After Buhr relieved Haas he went 3 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 BB. Brummel followed Buhr and gave up a run in the 9th and Grable relieved to end the inning and ends up getting the win. Quote

Taylor, Oliver, and Cerny are nowhere close to going yet and we're still putting up runs/opportunities. Hanley, Joey B (at the level he's playing rn), and Dickerson are big additions to the offense.
