#IUBASE - 3 game series vs Nebraska

Recommended Posts

Hobbie's doing his part on the mound; need to unmuzzle our bats.  Oh, and stop with the errors.  I think we had 3 last night and 2 already today.

So I immediately jinxed him in the top of the 6th.

My 2 Cents:

Losing Tracy Smith: not Fred Glass' fault. The replacement he hired if he fails will be 100% his fault.

Went to 1st IU game for baseball this yr and team looks a bit worse each yr. If we can ultimately stop here as a mid-level Big Ten team i think we have to be OK with that but if we keep falling and end up at the bottom of conference than its another problem on Glass' resume.

I found 2 major issues where IU got out managed. One is when the game was in balance in 6th inning our starter ran into trouble but escaped because fielder bailed him out with great catch. Lemonis trots him out there in 7th and he promptly gives up HR. Nebraska manager pulled starting pitcher as soon as their was a problem after he gave up a single and double so no further damage happened. That's where game was won and something where we got out managed big time.

However, the biggest problem is development. Under Smith I looked at 4-5 guys and said these are future pro's (Dickerson, Johnson, Phegley Schwarber, Travis) and they developed and got better every yr to get to where they are.

Similarly when Lemonis started 3 yrs ago their were 3 guys I looked at as freshmen in Ryan Fineman, Logan Sowers and Craig Dedelow and said these should be pros and none have developed into that like players did under Smith. Lemonis is recruiting just as well as Smith but not developing they guys in same successful way,

Ultimately, Glass will sink or swim with Archie Miller but if Lemonis fails along with Archie in 2-3 yrs it will be an add on that will sink Glass' whole tenure here.

One bright spot is crowds are still close to what they were during Smith era though. Place was nearly full to capacity today despite mediocre weather of 55 and mostly cloudy.

Another Tom Crean qoute. Well Lemo, you didn't make one damn change in the lineup today and we lead the world in Ks.

@lemo22: "We have to do a better job if we are going to compete."

Although it was not the problem today, from the stats I've seen, the pitching (particularly the starters) have been a far bigger issue than the offense this year.

The bullpen has given up HUGE leads on more than a few occasions and are hitters lead the B1G in Ks. The issues are wall to wall.

Lemonis was a "no brainer" hire IMO. Give him time. I think he'll get things going.

I hope you are right but the player development I've seen in his time here (albeit a relatively limited sample and I've seen them play even less) is not good. His recruiting is excellent and he's brought in top class in Big Ten each yr but I don't see that the players are necessarily turning into what they should be given the talent.
