TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

14-4, 7-11 then 9-9. They're 11-3 right now. But the seasons in between aren't acceptable. The 7-11 should have been 11-7. Last year was just as much of an embarrassment. Next year... if Crean is still around... just going to give him a pass? Because our guards won't be that good next year? Because we won't have depth down low? No depth at the 3? So we should just expect a good season or two and then 2 or 3 down years... that is what we're going to get with Crean. Can't build a consistency with his teams.

I actually like our team next year and our depth. We have experience and a solid group of incoming freshmen. Our freshmen from this year will make their leap. We will have good Juniors and Hartman. I guess I don't see the excuses you see.

the year after the title was rough but had we held onto aren't Abell I really feel like he could have helped. Yogi, Abell, sheehey, Troy and Vonleh could have been a very good team.

Next year will be key we lack a true PG atm if that comes back to bite us that's on Crean

The excuse of that year was we didn't have any shooters... more like Crean couldn't adjust for that team.

Well we don't have a PG. Just losing Yogi is more than anything we have can makeup. No one knows what Bryant will do. I'm guessing Troy is gone no matter what. That leaves us with JBJ, RJ, Newkirk, Jones, Green, Gelon at the guard spot. OG and Hartman at the 3. Then Morgan, Davis and possibly Bryant... that is a team that could probably finish somewhere in the 5-8 range in the B1G. We definitely won't be the favorite. That'll be MSU and with ease. Next year is a guess simply because our guard play. JBJ and RJ shouldn't be on the floor together. If they are it should be for limited spurts. And neither should be trusted as a PG.

I definitely agree the lows shouldn't be that low. The first year after the B1G title ok. We lost Oladipo and Zeller. Zeller was definitely expected. Oladipo was not. Last year should have never happened. At worst in either year is a top 5 finish. He is still here with a good shot at atleast a split. Let's see where the year ends. But I agree we need consistency.

What do you mean Oladipo wasn't expected? As in "not expected to be as good as he was" or "leaving after that year." He should have went first in that draft. Which would have sent him to Cleveland. And he could be playing with LeBron now... or in Minnesota with Andrew Wiggins.

Newkirk, RoJo, and Cujo won't fill Yogi's shoes but those are huge shoes. We have to win in a different way than Yogi carrying us. I am less worried about next year than this year at this point. But that is a top 25 team to me. MSU with their star studded class will be at the top. Osu will be there with their young core they have. I see us in the 3-5 range expectation wise with upside. We have a very balanced team. The players coming back will have experience and growth. If you don't see OG or Bryant having that Fresh to Soph jump then we will just disagree what we are expecting. RoJo can shoot. Look at Yogi the shooter as the years went on. Growth is expected.

RJ has become a streaky shooter. He's almost like JR Smith. If he is hitting.. he's hitting.. if not... then it ain't close. I think OG could be our best player. I don't know if he'll be Kawhi Leonard at SDSU.. simply because Leonard was REALLY good there. But has the tools to be our best player next year. I don't know if he can carry a team. He'd definitely have to develop a play style fit to be a #1 option. I think it is easy to say who will start in the 3, 4 and 5 spots. Are question marks are in the 1 and 2 spot.

OG, Davis and Bryant. If Bryant leaves OG, Hartman and Davis.

I'm not so sure about that.  You don't have a senior Hartman who has started a lot this season and last?  I think you can pencil in RoJo to one of the starting spots as well.  Depending on how well JBJ does coming off his injury I can see him starting.  I'm not sold we will see Davis starting right away.

Why wouldn't we start Davis? That'd make zero sense. We as fans have been wanting size. We might finally have it.. then want to start 6-6(on his tip toes) Hartman at the 4? I don't think Hartman is the person to care if he is starting or coming off the bench.

I think Hartman would do whatever is asked of him.  Yes, us as fans, have wanted a bigger lineup but we don't really decide the starting lineup.  I could see a ton of different options for a starting frontcourt next season, some include Hartman and another smaller stretch 4.  I could see OG getting the start 4 spot.  How many B1G teams start a more traditional 4?  It's been the way the game has been moving for years now.  If TB or DD are able to stretch the floor I could see them starting together.  If they can't I see DD coming off the bench.

Nothing wrong with attacking smaller lineups with a bigger lineup. Don't have to follow the pack of everyone else. We could be one of just a few teams in the who start two actual bigs.

It's possible but I think it takes dynamic bigs to accomplish that.  I don't see Crean going to that unless DD or TB can stretch the court.  If they can't it will mess up the spacing and IU will struggle to score.  I would much rather be able to space the floor and have a really solid back up 5 that can provide very little drop off if TB is in foul trouble.  I wouldn't count out JMor starting at the 4 either.  Like I said, we will have many options.  I don't want to see extreme small ball with 3 guards though.

Couple things about a few posts....

I was under the impression Newkirk came here to play PG. is that not true? Saw X mention we don't have a true PG. Will he be Yogi? No, but if he can lead the team then he will be a quality PG.

Oladipo was expected to go from anyone who was paying attention to him during his sophomore season. He kept getting better and better. After the UK loss in the NCAAs, I was saying he would be a first rounder if he kept improving. Others said the same thing. Crean didn't need to replace Vic though for that team to be good. He needed to replace the 3 point shooting from Hulls and Watford. He didn't do that and the team struggled.

If Crean win the Big Ten this season he will be back no matter what. Before the season started I thought this would be a two year process for Crean. I felt this team was the most talented on the conference and the only reason we were seeing a top 10 ranking preseason was coaching. Then in the second season we would see if Crean has finally gotten some consistancy. We lose Yogi and probably Troy, can Crean have the team stay in the top 5 in conference? If so, carry on with him.

I really thought after Maui that we would see the swoon in Feb/March. So far we are still in first place but with 3 huge tests remaining. We need to win 2/3 of those and one must be Iowa, unless the Hawkeyes falter.

I wouldn't mind seeing Davis start alongside Bryant (hopefully still here) and have also been calling for bigger lineups, but if that is the case then we need another backup big.

With that said, how fun would it be to see a big/long lineup featuring A front court of Bryant, Davis and OG? I would love that.
