  1. I was actually lukewarm on him. Figured he was Sampson-lite and just live and die with that aggressive defensive and brutal offense his whole career. I guess that’s maybe why I’m so impressed with what they’re doing now. If someone pries him away they’re getting a heckuva coach.
  2. Good for Otz. You rarely see a coach completely flip the script on style. He went from grind it out mugging basketball to this high flying offense. Pretty impressive stuff. I wouldn’t mind seeing them win it all.
  3. Texas also has Sean Miller…lol
  4. We just hired a guy away from a good P5 program. The list of college programs that can do that is incredibly short. Woody was just a dumb Fred Glass move. Archie was the top target that off-season. Crean was a P5 hire. So was Sampson. At any random time we could’ve hired guys like Beilien, Pitino, or May. We could’ve hired guys like Golden, but other programs saw the potential in them and hired them first. We just let guys like McRobbie and Glass be in charge for long stretches. That’s an unholy combination of dumb and unlucky.
  5. I’d say unlikely. Unlikely we’re in something like Kenpoms preseason top 25 either based on aggregate talent rankings. I don’t think it’s Devries style. He’s not the salesman type. I think he’s more of a slow builder from the ground up type. That makes it all the more frustrating he decided to go all seniors this year.
  6. This is just a fantasy people cook up in their minds to cope with all the losing. People desire agency, so in their minds fans can make a difference by being nicer, more patient, or wearing their lucky socks. It doesn’t matter. There was just another anonymous coaches poll posted a month or so back showing IU is still a top job in the Big Ten, as ranked by other coaches.
  7. Could be. I doubt it’s that high, personally. They had to move heaven and earth, including partnering with a local casino, to get that Timme kid like 500k a few years back. That was before revenue share but I just don’t think they’re getting much from NIL at all. These schools without a big and/or wealthy alumni base seem to be fishing in the dark.
  8. What revenue share would they even have. Hard to believe that conference has a tv deal unless it’s local.
  9. NIL…hard to compete when you don’t have it. Hard to lose when you do. Unless you’re IU
  10. A fortune run with the team Roy left for him. To your point, I think UNC understands that it’s been mostly downhill from there.
  11. It’s getting away from SLU a little bit here, largely because Avila can’t hit a shot. But this has been a very good game with lots of high level basketball. Both these coaches are pretty dang good.
  12. Seems like UK and UNC have them beat in NIL, but maybe that’s because of Davis. I agree though, easy top 4 job with lots of pull. They’ve never gone outside the family though
  13. Todd golden needs 6 more ounces of hair gel in his hair
  14. I know several coaches who thought he was a ******. One of who had an IU target recruit. Crean was a tireless recruiter and merciless when it came to cutting slackers. But he was an awful coach. Cmon now…
  15. Yea…because we had Crean as coach. Lol… Also, Cream went to 2 tournaments out of his last 4 years. The exact same as Woody. Where’s this narrative coming from that cream was making the tourney every year? Crean couldn’t beat a zone. Woody couldn’t stop teams that could shoot 3’s. Why keep either??? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills reading this stuff.
  16. This is completely wrong. And fans that think this was will never get it. Crean was fired because he was NEVER going to win a championship. And if you can’t understand that, there’s not any point in having the discussion.
  17. He got to take a couple guys with him. And I know Avila is kind of a meme but having a big that is a good passer and can step out like that really opens some things up. But yea… I’d say there’s a decent chance he’ll make some P5 program a nice coach. If he got a chance at a place like Ohio State or something where they have some money, I like his odds of being able to bring in portal guys to fit his style.
  18. As a thought exercise I could see that changing if a school wanted to just take a shot on a hot young coach. Not the midmajor flavor of the month but further down the totem pole. “Hey buddy, come take a shot in the big leagues. We’ll give you a huge salary but no buyout….you might only get two years but $5mil/yr” Would a Josh Shertz have been willing to have forgone a little comfort at SLU for a riskier shot at the IU job?
  19. Devries faced no extra pressure and was allowed to bring in 2 Drake starters out of 5 total. By percentages Devries brought more of his guys than Cig. The idea that IU football pre-Cig was the easier program to win at than IU basketball is something I’m unlikely to be sold on.
  20. Gotta say, I’m pretty curious as to how you could use Cig and IU football as an example and come to the conclusion you need 6 years. Somebody is going to have to connect those dots for me.
  21. It would be really weird for DDV to play anyone, even off the bench, that he knew was throwing games. With that said, Conerway is horrible and I can see why someone watching him play basketball would think he was purposely trying to be bad.
  22. Scheyer is a good coach. His team is struggling but he wasn’t too proud to throw out a junk zone to switch it up. Completely changed the game. Most coaches would be too proud to do that in a 1/16 game.
  23. If he can, he didn’t show much evidence of it this year. Ideally he turns it up next year.
  24. I’d fire Deibker for that last play alone. Turrible
  25. Great post. From an outside perspective, I kind of look at it like this: You see a few football schools get really good at basketball; you rarely see a basketball school win big at football. Football controls.
