No they wouldn’t. Most people are natural followers. If that person was winning our fanbase would defend them to the death like they did with Knight. But instead we’ve hired losers for 25 years so our fanbase has become proficient in excuse making and scapegoating for losing basketball. btw, I’m not sure if I buy that about May. He has that choir boy persona going with the media but behind the scenes he seems to be pissing everyone off.

NBA does it because that’s how their contracts/cba is structured. But it’s structured that way because that’s kind of how it was historically shaking out under a salary cap. We’re not going to be as limited as NBA team in terms of salary, structurally speaking, but we’re going to be limited by who is in the portal and available. By most reports we’d be able to fit 3 bigger names and then spread the leftover really thin over the rest of the guys. The way you do it doesn’t matter as much as fit and getting the “bang for your buck.” Paying money to guys who can’t meaningfully contribute is what sunk this last team.

I’m still kind of in disbelief that after waiting out the Archie and then Woody years were going into another tournament with IU. I think I’ve changed my mind on the post season. These guys are all being paid. They should drag their sorry butts to whatever Crown or NIT tournament that will have them and try and win something. They could all use the practice, coaches included.

Kansas has plenty of money. And Self can coach. But he’s really struggling (relatively speaking) to adjust to the NIL era. Lots of poor fits he hasn’t been able to coach up. Annoying center from UM, Storr, and the malcontent superstar frosh, etc… What Dusty and Underwood are doing goes way beyond money. Guys like Mara, Cadeau, and Johnson weren’t exactly portal darlings. They’re nice players who Michigan is getting more out of than their last coaches did. Perfect example of “fit.” Self has been the opposite—every year he has a malcontent or high priced guy producing less than at his last stop. That’s what Carr has to help with. And quite frankly Devries needs to be able to do when they get here. The roster this year wasn’t as bad as our record but most of the pieces didn’t fit together and I don’t particularly think the coaching really took for some of them either.

Seriously think it was just scouting. Since I was just going up and down those portal rankings looking for Boyd, you could see all the other players. Lots of names we would recognize surrounding our guys. Absent any other info, I think those rankings can serve as a rough proxy for cost. Money spent on Tucker, Bailey, and Conerway was seriously mis-allocated .

Boyd was ranked 72 in 24/7s portal ratings compared to Baileys 63. Doubtful he cost more than Bailey. UW is really down the list on NIL spend. Do much so that they just passed a bill to give an extra $10 mil to the Athletic Dept. In basketball they probably spend half what we do.

I know everyone hates Woody here, and he mostly deserves it. But he had a team that earned a 4 seed in tourney. In over 30 years…THIRTY…we’ve had exactly 3 teams that were a 4 seed or higher: the two Zeller teams and the Jeffries team. Devries has a lot of work to do to put out a team to earn a top 4 seed. But I mostly agree with you: if he strings together two years of a 10 seed or better most fans will feel good about him. I think…

I just read the quotes, and it might’ve been Devries not Dolson, but they basically said what people like to say here: misjudged the Big Ten, current players aren’t good enough (by implication), getting better players in the future.

Most of these guys are like 23, to be fair. Also, Devries and Dolson went on the radio the other night and told the whole world how bad the players were. Does it really matter if we say the same on a message board?
