  1. Respectfully, that he's from the state doesn't matter at all. CJ has shown a lot of talent, but he's not playing against B1G level comp for a reason.
  2. That's disconcerting, I'll go back and watch the game on replay. We're going to need JG, I don't see anyone critiquing Malik's game which was, it seems, a lot worse (and I'm a Ren fan, he is going through frosh big development at the B1G level, he'll get there)
  3. I missed the game, maybe a good thing. Having not watched the game I'm just looking at the box score and wondering about your Geronimo comment. From the box, in 19 mins, he was 4-6 and 1-1 for 9 points, 5 rebounds (3 of which were offensive), 3 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 2 TO's and 3 fouls. That looks like a strong game. Meanwhile Malik had 3 fouls and 2 TO's in 6 minutes. I'm not posting this so people can try to paint me as adoring JG, I'm wondering who can step up with Race out, and am having a hard time seeing that line reflecting this kind of comment on JG's game.
  4. But, but I really want to discuss your wedding calligraphy side hustle
  5. Semi-related, I still remember walking into 7th grade and being told we would never write in cursive again. I was like, what? Why did I have to learn how to do it then?? Lol
  6. And somewhere, a certain once-signed UT player now at IU is liking his move all the more
  7. Was never in doubt. No way UT would stand by with that out there.
  8. This is where I am. Easy W in the Hall, but the team has to show it can play well w/o X on the road, and Iowa will be motivated to play hard. Hoping TJD is healthy, Gallo brings his A game and the team as a whole brings full bore energy the full game.
  9. Yeah, thing is to me we’re basically the same team as last year except for JHS and Malik, and Bates’ growth, minus Stew. Malik is still adjusting to playing B1G level vet bigs (to be expected), take away X and that’s a big blow. Trey has shown real flashes but also is chasing consistency, and Bates, much better - finding his college game offensively, but isn’t yet a creator and better defensively but not fully there yet. Imo Bates, Gallo and JG all need to show well from now on, with Malik continuing to adjust - he’ll get there but imo not realistic right now to expect that to happen over night (love where he’s headed regardless)
  10. Mostly agree, but with some caveats. I would put Xavier in the "upper level teams" category (now 12-3 and a hell of a W against UCONN), that was a strong road W, and saying IU hasn't shown it can compete with the upper level teams on the road glosses over that we were without JHS against AZ (and did still make a run at it in the second) and for that matter @Rutgers. Both JHS and X, imo, are critical to our ability to win against good teams and especially on the road. Losing X for at least most of the season is a real obstacle to our getting to where we expect(ed), Gallo is not a point but is really going to have to step up.
  11. So help me God if we lose to Minny I am blaming you!
  12. Yeah but we suck, so… :)
  13. I mean 1st guy ever to get at least 60-20-10 triple d? Dude is unbelievable.
  14. I have found other things to be interested in. But I'm still immature. :)
  15. And both Xavier and UNC in top 25
  16. It’s all relative, his percentages this year were better earlier, yes they were low last year, you could do something similar with Gallo who was terrible from the arc last year. I’m not saying JG is a strong 3 pt shooter, but I’d bet he would get to 34% or so on more takes, the form is there. Food for thought, Vic shot in the 20s his soph year, hit in the 40s his jr yr. I remember a long convo with a guy who posts here who said he was a poor outside shooter, then he was mediocre. JG has the form, and he hit several big 3’s (timely, important) last season
  17. I understand why you’d say that about JG, but he’s hit some big 3’s and his form is solid. We’d say the same about Gallo coming into the season but his shot on more takes is better. I’d like to see JG shoot more, i think his percentages would go up
  18. Thanks for running this comparison, pretty much shows what I thought but wasn’t sure, we’re shooting better but still towards bottom in volume- outside takes. With TJD inside we could be doing a better job of developing the inside-out game to spread the floor and open lanes. I don’t understand why we’re still taking less outside shots, Kopp and Bates can hit, JHS, JG, Race and Gallo have all shown they at least can. Staff needs to spread the offense better. I’d bet we’re shooting a lot less outside than most other top 25 teams as well but leave that for later comp
  19. Which is a continuation from last season. I haven’t seen the volume numbers this year so don’t know how much more we’re shooting from deep, we do have more of an outside game but it still looks pretty imbalanced to me. Would be interested to see how our shooting numbers from deep compare on volume with other top 25 and B1G teams
  20. I don’t think your idea is that off fwiw. I haven’t seen a level of play from Banks to justify his displacing guys in the regular rotation, and anything we see now is without X which hurts us badly, but the offense is predictable and still limited, not as one dimensional as it was before Kopp and Bates started finding their outside game, and JHS helps create well. I think this and these discussions really come down to bball philosophy and personal risk willingness. So one of the reasons i’m such a Geronimo backer (and Bates and Gallo) is that he/they bring athleticism, quickness, steals, blocks and with JG and Gallo an ability to guard athletic guys and get out and run. That’s not to say I don’t like Race, his ability to step out has grown, he rebounded like an animal in this game (but against undersized guys) and he’s a savvy player who doesn’t make many mistakes— but we are too limited offensively in the usual lineups and strategy (imo). So where I think the disconnect is between fans like me who want to see guys like JG or for you Banks getting real run, and guys who respond by pointing out only their limitations (current or perceived) and that well, Woodson sees them in practice so end of discussion — Is I’d rather see certain guys in with the mistakes they’ll make, the still developing defensive awareness or timing, so long as they’re developing and improving on that, for the speed, athleticism, energy and diversity they add to our game, really on both sides of the ball. We saw how limited our usual lineup/ gameplan is against a team like AZ. That’s not to say hey look I’m right, but it’s what I see. People who strongly disagree I think have more of an RMK mindset to the game — no mistakes allowed. RMK’s (who of course is one of the best ever) philosophy included the idea that the team that makes fewer mistakes wins, that was one of his hallmarks. And if a guy made one RMK typically would yank him and chew him out. I liked many things about him, but not that, and in his later years it wasn’t working, our guys would just swing the ball around the perimeter, looking scared to screw up. I don’t want a team’s development - and ability to counter more athletic teams - held back by the idea you can’t play if you are making mistakes. Woodson to me looks to very much have that philosophy and he imposes it harder on some than others (he can’t afford to with JHS for example). That’s also the “trust” level that drives playing time. I want more risk for what i think is higher reward. That comes down to personal philosophy. We have talent that I think needs more run, and would help make us less predictable
  21. I don’t think it’s the wall. Kid is immensely talented, but the signs were there from the start that he’d have to adjust to avoid fouling experienced and/or more talented bigs. I’m sure he’ll get there but yeah, he’s a frosh and here comes the B1G. Also has some work to avoid TO’s
  22. You realize we were without X and TJD right? Ya think maybe that impacts how well we play?
  23. Hmm, seems i was just talking about his improvements…. Bates is well on the way to being the impact player we thought. Still early in soph season, and he’s clearly better than last season. Has to keep developing for sure, but he’s headed in the right direction!
