Transfer Portal w/IU Interest
HoosierHoopster replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Makes you feel better to make sh#t up? I clearly do?? What kind of stupidity is that? It’s a top 3 portal haul that’s what it is. I said the good thing is we now have multiple players with 2 years of eligibility, you know so we can then build with existing players from recruiting and portal - that’s actually what I said. I also commented that we’re back at a full rebuild because of the way this past season’s team was constructed which is, obviously, not what we want to keep doing. Maybe have a beer or something so you can post without making sh%.t up -

You have no way of knowing that, which is the point. Harris came to Duke as an elite shooter but didn’t play enough to know what he’s going to bring production wise to IU, that’s the roll of the dice. Dorn did not do well or score enough to think he should play good minutes, that’s over an entire season under DeVries. -

I do think it’s relevant, whether HS or portal transfers good players want to go to winning programs. Teams like Duke et al sell themselves. Teams like UM have the last 2 decades of high level success. A blip of 2 years doesn’t change that. IU has been bad for a decade, there is no luster to the program, and when you’re rebuilding the entire roster and players have no idea who they’d be playing with if the join, then looking at a school that hasn’t won jack in a decade vs a winning program absolutely makes a difference. For me this is the test year for DeVries and his staff. They’re still somewhat in the same boat because they’re rebuilding again based on the way DeVries built from portal last year and we missed the tourney, but there were a number of good W’s and now he has size and better athleticism needed to win more consistently in the B1G. I just have a longer outlook than you guys, doesn’t mean I’m patient or happy with where we are, couldn’t be more impatient at this point. But if DeVries does better in conf and gets us into the tournament, then with multiple talented returning players with eligibility I think we’ll see us take off the following season — that’s what I’m banking on anyway -

You don’t know what we actually had to spend on the portal, and from what what we do know multiple teams spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $10M plus. You say it would be impossible not to be in the top 5 but that’s just opinion without actual evidence. That we landed a better roster than last season minimally is obvious but you guys just keep nitpicking because you want to criticize. That’s all good have at it, but the only real problem I see is the inability to bring in a good backup big and another on ball guard. -

Of course it’s relevant. Cig - football and completely different- brought like a third of his team with him and that includes his culture and team knowledge and experience in his system. you guys seem to be going out of your way to find fault and undercut what DeVries is doing right now. Not sure why you think that’s necessary? In any event whether what he’s doing now in landing what is actually a top 3 portal class to go with at least a decent 2026 class will pan out remains to be seen, but trying to cast a bad light on it by comparison to Cig or UM (worlds different) is pointless other than to see the IU program as all doom and gloom. Unlike UM etc. IU has been flat out awful to mediocre at best for about a decade, if DeV can turn that around in 2 seasons that would be pretty good in my book. If he fails and we were to somehow miss the tournament again with this roster? I’ll be the first to shout from the rooftops— but I’ll place a wager with you that won’t happen -

Wait so you recognize you stand corrected because you misstated IU’s portal rank to make a point but then you reverse pivot to try to undervalue the actual rank? Ok -

You said backup big over Mustaf. Come on now. Your call is to run back a weaker group and with Dorn who completely fell off the rails and gave us next to nothing over the second half of the season. Dorn is proven??? Exactly what did he do for IU??? You suffer from memory loss? I liked him early in season. Then he got scouted and completely shut down. He’s at best a backup sometimes scorer for IU. You talk out of both sides of your mouth and ignore his season. Have at it -

No, as USPS pointed out UM has been one of the best teams in the B1G for some time minus the 2 year or so hiccup- it’s apples and oranges between programs. IU will require more time, it is what it is -

Oh come on already, you wanted to dump 2 we landed as part of the #3 portal class in favor of a lower tier big and Dorn whose scoring fell off significantly through the season and failed to help at all as we missed the tourney . This is pure hypocrisy and laughable— complain and bitc% about what DeVries has done in the portal while disregarding it’s the #3 class for good reason and ignoring that the player you now pine for gave us nothing down the stretch. Just laughably hypocritical. We have a group of much better players now, except for Wilkerson (who I’ll miss). Depth is a question mark, but pinning for the guy whose scoring dropped off a cliff and just some so so big is just plain laughable. Yeah, drop Mustaf for a cheaper guy and keep Dorn, that would make us so much better. Good grief. And yes Harris is worth the roll of the dice, dude is an outstanding shooter, well-ranked and recruited out of HS for it, now he’ll get a chance to show when not buried on the bench. Dorn? I would’ve like him to stay for depth but not at the expense of who we landed, no way. -

Think the building we’re looking for is underway. Can’t really just gloss over that we landed the #3 Portal class, and #25 2026 recruiting class, and now have multiple years of eligibility across the floor and a stud 2027 point guard already committed. You know the saying- Rome wasn’t built in a day. You don’t go from bottom of the barrel to NC, but you can build towards it, and we have some pretty good building blocks in place — I like the foundation, but yes have to keep building on it -

Making the tourney is a must this season for sure. Beyond that I’d want 2nd round or better but honestly it was a complete rebuild (again) and they’re all multi-year players so do well enough in conference, make the tourney and keep building next season with a strong 2027 class and Portal adds and we’re back to consistent strong seasons. That’s the path. -

And we have a stud 2027 point guard coming in and that class will likely improve as we show better this season. Building blocks are there -

Again agree we're thin at point, but Lindsay wouldn't be playing 38 min at point if Burton were to go down, likely would be shared on ball responsibility with Moody (who has some on ball experience) and probably Harris or Mustaf (not ideal for sure, but don't see Monden playing any real time) -

I'm in the camp of wanting further depth especially at point as I've been posting, but disagree we don't have "any depth whatsoever." Our depth is definitely limited but there is some, going to require some well thought out subbing, maybe -- Burton - Lindsay - Moody (these strike me as most likely to play on-ball roles, not sure of others) Lindsay - Harris - Monden Mustaf - Moody - Karvala Sherrell - Sisley - Manhertz Yigi - Sisley - Sokolov -
IU 2026-7 freshman comps
HoosierHoopster replied to RaceToTheTop's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Sometimes it is sometimes it isn’t. Rankings, call it composite, can be based on any number of things in a player, shooting, overall standout play, floor vision / lead guard play, athleticism, sometimes on pro “potential” based on raw athleticism (think Hanner etc), rim protection, etc. but lots of players are ranked on skills who do not have college ready bodies and strength, that happens regularly. Just because a player is ranked high doesn’t mean he’s physically ready to bang with college vets. -

HoosierHoopster replied to RaceToTheTop's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
The comps are interesting and thanks for posting, but if we’re just or mostly looking at common rank that will ignore body, strength / physique - general readiness for college/ B1G play - Moody is one of the lowest ranked but most consider him the most likely to be ready to contribute. Makes sense guards are more likely to pan out with the comps - bigs whose bodies aren’t really ready won’t play much, etc. -

HoosierHoopster replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Mostly agree other than the magically save part. We don't have an on ball backup, that's the point (pun intended). Many posts here have been looking for another big who is more than a developmental guy. Is that magical? There are and have been guys in the portal who fit the bill for a backup point, and how many minutes depends on how the minutes are distributed on ball and across the floor. Do we have a guy now who can keep the team afloat if Burton goes down? I don't know, maybe one of these guys like Lindsay can fit that bill, he seems the most likely, I'd just like some more balance on ball as it doesn't matter how many bigs you have if you don't have a good floor general. -

HoosierHoopster replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Neither is an on ball guard and Moody's just a frosh but yeah that seems to be the plan... I'd almost bet on Burton missing some games, he's going to be balling hard and he's going to get hit in the B1G, plus he's coming back from missing the bulk of last season. A lot of focus on bigs but if Burton goes down we could tank fast. -

HoosierHoopster replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yeah we're thin at point. Burton's health is key and he's coming off missing most of last season Moody is not a point, though he's apparently grown more of his combo-g game. Lyndsay is straight 2. I've been hoping we add a backup on-ball guard to go with a big.
