2026-27 Roster/Portal/how to fix the roster?
HoosierHoopster replied to Asha’man's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Would be really interested to know how much $ IU has/spends and how in NIL this year. Need more transparency in NIL (and rules but that’s another topic). Those of you who know (I don’t) - sites or people with credible data who track or compare college bball program NIL money and spending? -
2026-27 Roster/Portal/how to fix the roster?

It’s certainly debatable. MCCollum’s Iowa played a much worse - easier B1G schedule, IU’s conf schedule was significantly more difficult. That’s an actual comp. But McC got to play in the tourney so that is almost exclusively the focus and that’s simply not a comparison . Sure easy to say look he made the EE - and that is fairly impressive. But we don’t know what DeVries could have done in the tourney this year there is no direct tournament comp. Next season should tell us a great deal more - and it really starts in the portal. I was calling out Woodson early for his moronic 2 big no outside shooting “system” with a complete lack of coaching and got all kinds of pushback for a long time - I have zero patience for lousy coaching. DeVries is a good coach, the early calling McC heads and shoulders better is just that, wayyy early and based on a false regular season comp. If DeVries fails next year I’ll likely have a different opinion, but ignoring how he took IU into UCLA, a tourney team, and win there - UCLA’s first home loss in a long time, beat Wisconsin and PU, tourney teams and just looking at overall records in reg season instead of how much weaker Iowa’s schedule obviously was. That’s apples and oranges. McC showed what he can do in the tourney he deserves credit for that, but no he hasn’t shown he’s better than DeVries, that’s way premature and I doubt it holds up. I’m really disappointed in the end of season collapse but I haven’t seen what DeVries can do with a team built with enough time and staff. -

“lol” DeVries has a long well-established DI track record, and yes what USPS stated is factual and is an actual comparison of the respective records, which was the point. I’m not going to walk through Iowa’s losses they’re what they are, as is DeVries wins at UCLA, against Wisconsin, against PU. He showed adjustments that led to wins in multiple games. He also lost badly in others - and the teams sometimes lose point applies equally to IU. Iowa’s regular season and McC’s coaching didn’t show he was “heads and shoulders better” than DeVries but sure they got in and we fell out from the same seed position, 9. I saw our players outside Wilkerson inability to contend well at the back end of the schedule — my vantage point it was much more on the players than coaching. DeVries can coach, personally I’m waiting to see what he does both in the portal now that he has time to put a team together with a staff, and next season for how he competes in conf and the portal. -

Why ignore the post I quoted to try to make this stretched comparison. Of course they made the tourney and we didn’t. Comparitively we were similar teams with Iowa crapping the bed in multiple games — head and shoulders above him while ignoring everything USPS just posted and ai quoted is just ridiculous. Maybe look at what the quote and tell me how USPS is wrong? -

We were a 9 seed then fell out. Good grief just read USPS’s post - which I quoted - to satisfy your “curiosity.” -

The way they were playing end of season, probably, but no way to know. Iowa flat out sucked but then found a way -

He had a better year bc he made the tourney. My post was to echo what USPS pointed out, all of which points are clear. McCollum was doing pretty bad by any fair non-biased account , failing in multiple games, but he / Iowa squeezed into the tourney and then got them to EE. Wonder what DeVries would’ve done if the team hadn’t fallen out of the tournament. We won’t know until next season - and yes, absolutely has to make the tourney next year. -

It’s so funny to read posts lauding Iowa’s coach / staff while completely ignoring the season. our guys blew it down the stretch. Fair to put some of that on coaching, ridiculous to ignore all of Iowa’s coaching failures. -

Because it’s about the core group coming back to build on what they started, not some kind of celebration of a losing season. Really?? -

I think this is a fair read and largely accurate. My only real sticking point or nagging question point is that losing a key frosh starter, who is absolutely a core player positionally including for on ball play and who was expected to be part of core continuity, hurts the team's / Moren's ability to come out of the gate as a cohesive unit. It's also a hit to depth. This team is not in the more typical position of being able to lose a key player or two because of depth. It was rebuilding from last season's en masse departures, and losing a key player with a year's experience in the program can be a real setback. Absolutely need to land players like Shay, but the team's in a much better position if that add is to an existing core group well versed in Moren's system and used to playing together. Caffey is just one of the core players, so so long as the rest stay it may not be that bad, that's a we'll see, but man really really liked her upside and having a core group matters. -

You’re quickly losing whatever remaining excitement you have if any, my perception. No one has committed, we don’t know 1 let alone 5 or more portal players, other than the decent frosh. Bunch of mid players? Aren’t going to coach them up? Man, why follow IU ball if you just drag the dark cloud around you every day and before you actually know anything? DeVries has had 1 season starting late with no players and no staff. No idea yet who’s going to suit up as starters next season but that’s kind of the point. We do know we have Carr now. Let’s see what he and the rest of the staff actually do before throwing in the towel. -

Have to think staff is actively pursuing at least 1 if not 2 bigs. I count Noyan as a core player, and she was improving, so if her entering the portal means she is for sure leaving (as opposed to testing the portal waters), yeah that sucks -- but there are certainly a number of comparable or better players in the portal, so if she is in fact gone hope to see the replacement and another big signing in the near future. -

Yep we’ll see. We know he beat out UK for Wilkerson. That’s actual head to head recruiting so far. Personally I think he demonstrated good coaching acumen, and he brings an established history of building teams up. He disappointed for sure in the end of season collapse but how much of that was on the lack of depth of talent? Very interested to see how the portal recruiting goes, what players are emphasized, how big a role and impact does Carr play and bring, what other changes in approach will we see? Big off season. Needs to score some real impact players -

What coaches are running circles around DeVries? Are you talking recruiting? As in when he came in late with no staff? Has it in him? Don’t think there’s a basis for that observation, but this spring and summer for sure is a test, and Carr should be play a big part -

Yeah I get all that and don’t mean to be unnecessarily dismissive, but it’s almost comical how this Board one day criticizes the talent level of our current group - most of whom excelled at the mid major level - and then it’s hey look at this Robert Morris guy. To contend in the B1G and run into March we all know we need B1G level athletes, length, skill. There are always good mid major guys who can make the leap, but we have a legit NBA scouting talent now on staff, time to recruit with a full staff in place, and portal money to spend. I’m sure the staff plans on aiming high, the microscope is already on. I expect that there will be plenty of good high major players available. Even Woodson could land high end players, he just had no college game acumen, no modern offense, no coaching ability etc. I think DeVries will aim higher out of the gate -

I think we can do better than a Robert Morris transfer -
We lost our mojo when the U self-reported and self-imposed program ending sanctions in firing Sampson. We were 24-4 when he was fired. He was landing elite recruits including recruits who committed before his termination. Then Crean had to rebuild from complete scratch playing baseball players to start without scholarships to offer. btw Beilein was always a cheater (ineligible players etc) he just hadn’t been caught like Sampson at OK. But then maybe it would’ve worked out if we hired him because unlike Sampson the NCAA wasn’t actively after him. Just looking at what Sampson has built at UH is depressing lol
