What was your first/earliest memory of...
LamarCheeks replied to Old Friend's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We beat Michigan in the 1976 NCAA title game to finish unbeaten. I was 7. My mother, an IU alum, shed tears of joy. -
I have to admit, when Teri Moren first came aboard, I did not like the hire. I was adamantly opposed to hiring another Purdue grad. But I think we got the best person we possibly could have. Hope she and the ladies see continued success.

BTW, we're playing West Virginia in the NCAA tournament. We're a 10 and they're a 7.

Archie's favorite TV show: Narcos. His favorite movie: Kingpin. Looks as if he's making an effort to cover the can in this photo. Wonder if it's 12 ounces of his favorite ale? -
Watching IU/VCU now. It's one of those hour condensed versions. Not sure I understand why they can't just show the whole game. I can't imagine they currently have a glut of programming. ... The thing I remember about that game is we kept setting all those high ball screens for Jordy. And the screener's man would just stick with Jordy on a double team -- and he really struggled to beat it. It was painful to watch -- because it happened over and over and over.

I'm not sure Archie had anything to do with him. I'm pretty sure Anthony Grant was responsible for him being at Dayton. Seems as if he was a little like Oladipo -- a totally UTR recruit who really blossomed in college.

Wonder when/if we'll hear about any guys transferring out of the program? ... Sorry. Know it's sorta been addressed, but I thought I'd try to get this thread back on topic -- which is IU offseason moves. Not the Pacers and T.J. McConnell. -
My friend -- a South Carolina alum and big fan -- pointed out to me that the Gamecocks trailed at the end of a quarter only three times this season. Two were against us -- including the all-important fourth quarter. Just gives an indication of how dominant that team was. And how huge our win over them was.

This came out over a month ago. I wonder if, since he already said this -- and is sticking with it -- he figures there's really no point to getting feedback if he's not planning to go anywhere? -
I just watched that this afternoon on YouTube. I think that was Jeffrey Newton's one shining moment. He was a beast in that game -- on both ends of the court.

Just took the path of least resistance. Not surprised at all. Nor impressed. ... A Power 5 school picks an AD who has never hired or fired a coach? Doesn't make any sense -- but for IU, it makes perfect sense.

Hey, not only did we get in -- we won our first game! Looks as if Good Devonte showed up. If we want to get to the Sweet 16, I'm guessing it'll have to be someone else stepping up. I don't see Devonte having two good games in a row ...

Yea or Nay: give seniors another year of eligibility?
LamarCheeks replied to RaceToTheTop's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I weigh in with a soft no. They all pretty much played out their senior seasons, and I think that's enough. But if the NCAA decided to allow them to return, I wouldn't kick up a fuss. I'm all for granting spring sport athletes another full year, however. That said, when it comes to our basketball seniors, I'm not sure they'd want to come back. I think Devonte is ready to move on. My guess is that he feels his game is better suited to pro ball -- likely overseas, I would presume. And I suspect that De'Ron is just tired of playing with all the injuries. Calendar-wise, he came in as a 19-year old and leaves as a 23-year old. Health-wise, he came in as a 19-year-old and leaves like a 38-year old. Plus, I'm not sure either had the best relationship with Archie. I base that on absolutely nothing factual, but both were Crean recruits. -
I watched a pretty entertaining Indiana high school playoff game tonight. Hickory beat Linton 56-55 in the regional final.

Sure, he's bigger -- and probably better. But will it matter if he can't stay healthy? Tom Allen: "Hey -- this is your team." I thought it was interesting that in a Chicago Tribune story about Ramsey transferring to Northwestern, Peyton's father says Allen told him he would be the starter going into next season. That wasn't consistent what what Allen's seemingly been saying all along -- that when Penix is healthy, he's the man.

I wonder if the non-handshake had to do with our side being worried about what might've been going on with Hoiberg? Or is that gonna be standard practice from here out? ... Did anybody see the Minny-N'western game? Did they do the same? ... After 40 minutes of bumping and banging and sweating, it just seemed odd to eschew the typical handshakes afterward. -
Peyton Ramsey to Northwestern
LamarCheeks replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
This guy is comparing Ramsey to Joe Burrow? Really? And according to Ramsey's dad, Tom Allen told Peyton he'd start next year. Not sure I buy that. But I suspect you're gonna want to put a Northwestern spin on things. (Especially since Greenstein went to Northwestern). https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-northwestern-peyton-ramsey-transfer-20200310-adi63kbc6jdedmgtvymh4dhbue-story.html?fbclid=IwAR0IlXTYnSasrQnVwiZbv8NTx5LrN_0YPFISR2htr2jAIwH3se3L_XJUE9A -

I don't know enough about it to say whether he'd be a good hire or not. But I fear he will get the gig simply because it's the easy move and is taking the path of least resistance. (BTW, I'm a big Chris Reynolds fan. He played when I was in school and seems to be a top-notch dude across the board).

Vitale just ranted about what a great guy Lunardi is and prattled on about how hard he works. Then he demanded that Sean Miller apologize. ... Yes, he said Sean. Regardless, so a guy who projects brackets for the NCAA tournament works as hard -- or harder -- than a basketball coach at a Power 5 school?

I'm not terribly worried about football players joining the roster (although with our luck, the backup QB will score 30 points against us in a stunning upset), but how is this possible? Can you just add players at this point in the season? If so, can't we go down to the HPER building and find a 3-point shooter from the intramural crowd? LOL! -
Pitt 81, Wake 72 ... Is that it for Danny Manning in Winston-Salem?

Can't argue with this selection, but it makes me wonder ... Are there coaches who simply have a ceiling at the mid-major level? Because Grant was great at VCU, was a failure at Alabama and is kicking a$$ at Dayton. Will he parlay this success into a second shot at a Power 5 school? ... John Groce is another. He was great at Ohio U, didn't last at Illinois and this year, won the MAC regular-season title at Akron. ... Darrin Horn (former Crean assistant) did a bang-up job at WKU, stunk at South Carolina and now has Northern Kentucky in the Horizon League title game ... The jury's still out on Shaka, but he knocked it out of the park at VCU, then has been so-so at Texas ... And obviously, we have Archie ... Despite what a lot of people think, I think the jury's still out on him. But are we seeing a guy who's simply gonna peak at the mid-major level? I certainly hope that's not the case ...

The floor at this WCC tournament is driving me nuts. It makes it look as if they have giant spotlights shining on either end of the floor, while the lights are out over midcourt.

If this got posted somewhere, forgive the repetition. But I haven't seen it anywhere here and saw it for the first time today. It was written in advance of the B1G tourney, but is pretty interesting. I don't know who might have seen the story about Josh Speidel and all he went through and how he got to start and score his first collegiate points in his final game at Vermont. He and Patberg are old friends, and he helped prop her up through some of her tough times. Sounds like both are pretty good kids. A nice story ... https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28845679/how-childhood-friend-helped-indiana-ali-patberg-find-game-again
