The Indiana University men's and women's diving teams wrapped up the final day of competition at the IUPUI House of Champions on Sunday afternoon. With a score of 312.40 in the finals of the men's 1-meter dive, junior Mory Gould earned an NCAA Zone Qualifying Score.

Burns, Samy Named Big Ten Swimmers of the Week

Indiana University senior Mohamed Samy and freshman Brendan Burns were named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The honors of the first of the season for each swimmer and the first collected by a Hoosier this season. 
 
Samy has been dynamic in the pool all season for the Hoosiers. He piled up six total event victories at the Tennessee Invitational, to include three individual victories and three relay crowns. His wins came in the 200 freestyle (1:33.65), 200 backstroke (1:41.03), 200 IM (1:44.00), 200 freestyle relay (1:17.41), 400 freestyle relay (2:50.11), and 800 freestyle relay (6:22.79). 
 
Both his times in the 200 free and 200 back rank third among the NCAA leaders, while his 200 IM time stands fifth in the country. In total, Samy has tallied 16 event wins this season and has four times that rank inside the top-10 in the NCAA individual standings this season.
 
Burns charted three event wins at the Tennessee Invitational. He was the first to the wall in the 200 butterfly (1:41.45) and was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay (2:50.11) and 800 freestyle relay (6:22.79) teams. 
 
His 200 fly time marked the fourth-fastest time swam by a USA swimmer in the 17-18 age group ever and is currently the nation-leading time in the event. Burns also holds the eighth-fastest time in the 100 fly in the NCAA.

The Indiana University men's and women's swimming teams will be well represented in the 2019 Toyota U.S. Open. A total of 17 current and former Hoosier swimmers will compete in the four-day meet in Atlanta. 
 
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
The long-course meet will begin on Wednesday evening with the men's an women's 800 freestyle races. The women will begin at 6 p.m. 
 
Action on both Thursday and Friday is slated to begin with preliminary races at 10 a.m., while Saturday will kick off at 8 a.m. with the preliminary rounds of the 200 backstroke event.
 
For each event, 24 athletes will advance through the prelims and into the finals. Each set of finals will be broken down to three heats with the bonus final, consolation final, and championship final.

Four current and former Indiana men's swimmers competed in the opening night of the 2019 Toyota U.S. Open Championships at the Georgia Tech McAuley Aquatic Center on Wednesday evening.

• Grothe easily cruised to the wall under the US Olympic Trial cut time of 8:12.99 in the 800 freestyle. He and Brinegar, a redshirt for the Hoosiers this season, were two of the nine swimmers to clear the eight-minute mark in the event.
• A total of 76 swimmers competed in the event. The four with IU affiliation all fell inside the top-20 in the final results. 
 
UP NEXT
Day two of the Toyota U.S. Open Championships will begin tomorrow, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. with the preliminary heats of the 400 freestyle. A total of 13 current and former Indiana swimmers will be in action tomorrow.

A total of 13 current and former Indiana men's and women's swimmers participated in the second day of action at the 2019 Toyota U.S. Open Championships. The meet was swam at the Georgia Tech McAuley Aquatic Center on Thursday. 
 
Former Hoosier seven-time All-American Zach Apple highlighted the second day of action with a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.81. He joined Zane Grothe and Marwan El Kamash as the three swimmers with Indiana ties to compete in the A Final on the second day of competition.

• King, a 14-time All-American during her four-year run in the Cream and Crimson, captured another Gold in her premier event, the 100 breaststroke. She is the reigning Olympic and FINA World Champion winner in the event.

• All three of the men's 100 breaststrokers (Finnerty, Miller, and Winnett) qualified for the Olympic Trials with times under the 1:03.29 cut time. The women's 100 breaststroke crew (King, Lazor, Morley, and Weiss) saw similar success as all four hit the Olympic Trial cut time of 1:10.99 in the event.

Former Indiana men's swimming All-Americans Zach Apple and Cody Miller each captured victories in the 100 freestyle and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Apple finished the weekend with a pair of runner-up finishes and an individual title, while Miller earned a Bronze and a Gold. 
 
Lilly King (Silver), Annie Lazor (Bronze), Bruno Blaskovic (Bronze) all picked up medals on the final day of action from the Georgia Tech McAuley Aquatic Center on Saturday night. Michael Brinegar (fourth) and Laura Morley (sixth) each added to the Hoosier total in Championship Final participants.

• Apple won the 100 freestyle by nearly a full second, while also swimming a time that threated the US record mark of 47.39 set by Ryan Held earlier this season.

• Brinegar coasted to an Olympic Trial cut time in the 1,500 freestyle, while Calvillo also touched under the qualifying time.
• After nabbing a spot in the D Final, Dupre was able to best her preliminary round time and establish an Olympic Trial cut time.

IU Swim and Dive Adds Long to Coaching Staff

Indiana University head swimming coach Ray Looze announced the addition of John Long as an assistant coach for the swimming and diving program. 

Long joins the Indiana swimming and diving staff after seven highly successful seasons as an associate head coach at Queens University of Charlotte, a Division II program. Both the men's and women's teams have won the NCAA Division II National Championships in each of the five seasons.

While at Queens, Long helped mentor 86 NCAA event winners, 45 NCAA record setters, nine NCAA Swimmers of the Meet, and three Olympians at the 2016 Rio Games. The women's program posted a cumulative GPA of 3.7, while the men's team added a 3.3 cumulative GPA.

Prior to his time at Queens, Long served as an assistant coach for the Aquatic Team of Mecklenburg, a year-round swim program located in Charlotte, N.C., and saw tremendous success at the club level.  

Before starting into coaching, John swam at the 2012 Olympic Team Trials, competed for Queens at the Division II Nationals, and was also a part of a Division I National Championship Team at Auburn University.
 
Long graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor's degree in exercise science in 2011.  While at Auburn, Long studied under Dr David Pascoe on High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) for triathletes. He culminated with a senior paper there with a study on taper for swimming.

IU SPLITS TWO MEETS WITH TEXAS, LOUISVILLE
The Indiana men's and women's swimming and diving teams both toppled No. 9/11 Louisville in both the long-course (197-84, 166-115) and short-course (189.5-91.5, 142-139) meets but fell to No. 2/8 Texas (157.5-121.5, 146-134) and (160-118, 168-113) at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on Nov. 8-9. All six teams competing in the meet were ranked inside the top-20 of the TYR Dual Meet Rankings. 

MEN'S TEAM DOMINATES BIG TEN OPPONENTS
The Indiana men's swimming and diving teams defeated both Iowa (245-55) and Michigan (165-135) at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center the first Saturday in November.

For the second-straight meet, senior Mohamed Samy was electric. He posted three event times inside the top-10 nationally to this point in the season, to include the nation-leading time in both the 100 free (43.20) and the 200 IM (1:44.95) and the fourth-fastest time in the 200 free (1:35.30).

INDIANA PICKS UP THREE WINS AGAINST KENTUCKY, NOTRE DAME
Five Hoosiers combined to win nine individual events and one relay in the season-opening tri-meet against Kentucky and Notre Dame. Sophomore Zane Backes won the 100 and 200 breaststroke, freshman Brendan Burns touched first in the 200 butterfly, junior Gabriel Fantoni took gold in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 100 fly, and senior Mohamed Samy won the 100 and 200 freestyle plus the 200 IM. 

IU defeated UK by a score of 204-96 and ND by a final tally of 219-81.

EIGHT HOOSIERS NAMED TO 2019-20 U.S. NATIONAL TEAM ROSTER
Eight current and postgraduate Indiana University swimmers were named to the 2019-20 USA Swimming National Team roster, which is made up of the nation's top six swimmers in each individual Olympic event. Current Hoosier swimmer Michael Brinegar was named to the squad, while postgrads Lilly King, Annie Lazor, Zach Apple, Ian Finnerty, Zane Grothe, Cody Miller, and Blake Pieroni made the cut.

HOOSIERS DOMINATE PURDUE IN FINAL HOME DUAL MEET
The IU men's and women's swimming and diving teams dominated in-state rivals Purdue by scores of 174-120 (women's) and 179-112 (men's) at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center on Jan. 25 in front of Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie and his wife, Laurie Burns McRobbie, who both attended the meet as art of the Bicentennial celebration.
 
The Hoosiers won 23 of the 32 contested events and saw seven individuals win multiple events. Freshman Cora Dupre led the charge with three event victories. The Indiana men have now defeated Purdue in 10-straight dual meets, dating back to the 2009-10 season. The women's team holds a nine-meet winning streak over the in-state rival.
 
IU SWIMMING AND DIVING EARNS SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA HONORS
Both the Indiana men's and women's swimming and diving squads were named College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Teams on Jan. 29. To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the fall semester.
 
GOULD, PEPLOWSKI HONORED BY BIG TEN
Indiana junior diver Mory Gould was named Big Ten Diver of the Week, while sophomore Noelle Peplowski was named Co-Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 15 for their efforts in the Michigan dual. The honors marked the first for each athlete and the first received by a Hoosier since the calendar turned to 2020. 
 
HOOSIERS FALL IN DUAL AGAINST MICHIGAN
For the first time since the 2016 season, the Indiana men's swimming and diving team was unable to topple the Michigan Wolverines in a dual meet, as Michigan took down both the men's team (160-140) and the women's team (186-114) on Jan. 11. 
 
A total of five Hoosiers claimed multiple victories in the meet, highlighted by Mory Gould capturing titles in both diving events and Noelle Peplowski sweeping the breaststroke events. On top of individual event wins, Bruno Blaskovic, Brendan Burns, and Mohamed Samy also helped Indiana coast to a 400 freestyle relay event championship.

The Indiana University men's swimming and diving team toppled the No. 10 Louisville Cardinals by a final tally of 171-129, while the women's team suffered a tough 156.5-143.5 setback against the No. 19 Cardinals at the Ralph Wright Natatorium on Friday afternoon.

He accomplished this feat for the third time this season after doing so in both the long course and short course competitions against Texas and Louisville earlier in the season. His winning 1,000 free time also established a new career best.
• Blaskovic walked away with two individual event victories for the first time during his senior campaign. He also led the winning 400 freestyle relay with a 43.76 opening split. 
• The six-dive score (402.83) posted in the 3-meter dive by Gould broke the Ralph Wright Natatorium record. 
• In total, 13 Hoosiers helped claim 17 event victories. Indiana tallied 12 NCAA B Cut marks in the pool and five Zone Qualifying Standard scores on the boards.

Indiana University junior Bruno Blaskovic was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The honor is the first of the season for Blaskovic and the fifth collected by a Hoosier this season. Senior Mohamed Samy (Big Ten Swimmer of the Week) and freshman Brendan Burns (Big Ten Freshman of the Week) each collected conference laurels on Nov. 27, 2019. Junior Mory Gould (Big Ten Diver of the Week) and sophomore Noelle Peplowski (Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week) each earned league honors on Jan. 15. 
 
Blaskovic compiled three event victories in Indiana's 171-129 team win over No. 10 Louisville. He won both the 50 free (19.95) and the 100 free (43.52). He also served as the leadoff leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay. He split a time of 43.76 to open the race.
 
All three of his times resulted in NCAA B Cut marks. His two individual event titles and three combined wins marked a season high for the Vodnjan, Croatia, native.

Indiana University freshman Cora Dupre was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The honor is the first of the season for Dupre and the sixth collected by a Hoosier this season. Dupre turned in. dynamic performance against the No. 19 Louisville Cardinals. She tallied three event victories, including the 50 freestyle (22.93), the 100 freestyle (49.45), and the 300 freestyle (1:47.70). 
 
The meet marked the third time in her debut season in which Dupre compiled at least three event victories. Her time in the 100 free clocked in under the NCAA B Cut standard time.

The No. 17-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team will travel west for the 2019 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships this week at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, Iowa.
 
The four-day meet will begin with on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. On Thursday through Saturday, the teams will swim a preliminary session in the morning at 11 a.m. with the championship session to follow at 6:30 p.m.

SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
Indiana enters this week's Big Ten Championships ranked No. 21 in the latest CSCAA/TYR Top 25 Poll. The Hoosiers are one of seven conference teams ranked or receiving votes in the national poll.
 
The Hoosiers finished the dual meet portion of the schedule with a 4-5 record despite facing a gauntlet of a schedule laced with TYR Top 25 programs. Indiana earned victories over No. 13 Louisville (twice), No. 16 Notre Dame, and in-state rival Purdue.
 
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Indiana has compiled six conference titles on the women's side, with the most recent coming during the 2018-19 season.
 
IU has claimed the championship or runner-up nod in each of the last 11 years at the Big Ten Conference meet. The Hoosiers racked up three-straight league crowns from 2009-11 after earning championships in 2003 and 2007.
 
2019 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Hoosiers, in front of the home crowd at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, captured the Big Ten Championship for the first time since the 2011 campaign. IU amassed 1,386.5 points to narrowly edge No. 2 Michigan. The Wolverines tallied 1,302.5 points, while No. 22 Ohio State collected 1,162.5 points to claim third place. Indiana's point total marked the most points scored in a single Big Ten Championship meet by the Hoosiers.
 
Over the course of the 2019 Big Ten Women's Championships, the Hoosiers won a total of 14 medals – seven gold, one silver and six bronze. Earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors for the Hoosiers were Bailey Andison, Christine Jensen, Lilly King, Shelby Koontz, Jessica Parratto and Morgan Scott.
 
Indiana's Lilly King finished her Big Ten career as a 16-time conference champion. She is currently the only female swimmer in conference history to secure four-straight 200 breaststroke crowns, and is the only woman in league history to win eight breaststroke titles.

Not an ideal way to start the B1G championships for the IU women.

The No. 23-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team struggled out of the gate during the opening day of the 2020 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
 
After the first two events, the Hoosiers sit in 13th place with 50.0 overall points. No. 5 Michigan leads the overall scoring with 118.0 points. No. 19 Ohio State ranks second with 112.0 points and Wisconsin stands in third with 108.0 points.
 
The 200 medley relay team consisting of junior Grace Haskett, freshman Emily Weiss, freshman Cora Dupre, freshman Ashley Turak was disqualified for an early takeoff despite turning in the third-fastest time of the event at 1:36.29.
 
The team would run it back in a time trial at the conclusion of action on day one and recorded an NCAA B Cut time of 1:37.01.
 
The 800 freestyle relay team made up of senior Maria Paula Heitmann, junior Josie Grote, sophomore Noelle Peplowski, freshman Ryley Ober took fifth place with an NCAA B Cut time of 7:05.10.
 
Junior Abby Kirkpatrick reached an NCAA B Cut mark in a time trial of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.65. Junior Bailey Kovac notched an NCAA B Cut time in the 200 breaststroke time trial at 2:12.23. Freshman Carla Gildersleeve set a career best time with an NCAA B Cut mark of 1:56.03 in the 200 butterfly time trial.

The 2020 Big Ten Women's Championships continue on Thursday with the first full day of competition. The action gets underway at noon ET with the prelims of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 1-meter dive.

Historic Performance Help No. 23 Hoosiers Climb to Third Place After Day Two

The No. 23-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team moved up in the team standings in the second day of competition at the 2020 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on Thursday afternoon.
 
After the first two days of competition, the Hoosiers catapulted all the way to third place with 338.0 overall points. No. 19 Ohio State leads the field with a two-day point total of 561.0 and No. 5 Michigan has compiled 478.0 points for second place in the team standings.
 
Senior Cassy Jernberg surged late to capture silver in the 500 Freestyle Championship Final. The medal marked the second of her career after winning bronze in the 1,650 as a junior. Her time of 4:37.07 makes her the fifth-fastest performer in program history in the event. Fellow senior Maria Paula Heitmann moved to eighth on the all-time performance list with a sixth-place finish and time of 4:40.24.
 
In the Consolation Final of the 500 freestyle, junior Josie Grote finished ninth overall with a time of 4:41.99 and sophomore Maggie Wallace finished 14th overall with a time of 4:44.78.
 
Sophomore Mackenzie Looze took the bronze medal in a historically fast 200 IM Championship Final. Her time of 1:55.79 marked an NCAA B Cut time, a personal record, and the fifth-fastest performer in program history in the event.
 
Junior Bailey Kovac finished 10th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.75, just missing out on a career-best mark. Junior Abby Kirkpatrick claimed 13th with a time of 1:58.98, while freshman Emily Weiss notched a 19th-place effort with a career-best time of 1:59.59.
 
Freshman Cora Dupre threw down her second-straight sub-22 second time in the 50 freestyle during the Championship Final. Her time of 21.93 gives her four of the five quickest performances in the event in program history.
 
Freshman Ashley Turak won the Consolation Final of the 50 freestyle to finish ninth overall in a career-best time of 22.20, making her the third-fastest performer in IU history in the event. Junior Grace Haskett finished 12th overall in the event with a time of 22.47, while junior Laurel Eiber nabbed 13th place with a career-best time of 22.60 to move into the top-10 on the all-time performers list at Indiana. Freshman Alexis Doherty took 24th out of the C Final with a time of 22.92.
 
In the B Final of the 1-Meter, freshman Zain Smith put together a six-dive tally of 268.30 and added another NCAA Zone Qualifying Score to her yearly total. She finished fourth in the consolation final to claim 12th overall in the event.
 
The 400 medley relay team consisting of Dupre, Weiss, senior Shelby Koontz, and Turak finished sixth, snapping a three-year winning streak in the event, with a time of 3:32.72. Dupre led off the relay with an NCAA B Cut and career-best time of 52.47 in the 100 back. She is the eighth-quickest performer in program history in the 100 back.
 
At the conclusion of the meet, freshman Katrina Sommer finished a time trial of the 200 IM in a time of 2:03.57.

Dupre Wins Gold on Day Three in Iowa City

The No. 23-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team compiled three more podiums during the third day of competition at the 2020 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday.
 
With one competition day remaining, the Hoosiers remain in third place with 680 points. No. 19 Ohio State continues to lead the pack with 1,016 points, and No. 5 Michigan is in the second slot with 855 points.
 
Freshman Cora Dupre brought home the first gold medal of the meet for the Indiana Hoosiers in the 200 Freestyle Championship Final. She touched the wall first with a career-best time of 1:43.61, a Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool Record and the third-fastest time in program history. She is the first Hoosier to win the event since Kennedy Goss in 2015.
 
Senior Maria Paula Heitmann nabbed a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:46.04 in the 200 free. Junior Josie Grote (1:47.15) and freshman Ryley Ober (1:47.68) finished 13th and 16th, respectively, in the 200 free Consolation Final. Finally, junior Laurel Eiber (1:47.58) and senior Cassy Jernberg (1:47.71) finished 19th and 20th, respectively, out of the C Final.
 
Freshman Emily Weiss finished runner-up in the 100 Breaststroke Championship Final with a career-best time of 58.78, while Peplowski powered through for a lifetime-best time of 58.91 to finish fourth. Both times are NCAA B Cut marks. Weiss and Peplowski become just the third and fourth swimmers in program history to swim sub-59 seconds in the event.
 
Junior Abby Kirkpatrick finished fifth in the 100 Breaststroke Consolation Final to claim 13th overall in a time of 1:00.54.
 
The 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Ashely Turak, Dupre, junior Grace Haskett, and Eiber finished third with an NCAA A Cut and school-record time of 1:28.37. Turak led off with a 50-split of 22.40, an NCAA B Cut.
 
Sophomore Mackenzie Looze led a pack of three Hoosiers in the 400 IM Championship Final with a fourth-place finish. She coasted in with a time of 4:08.79. Junior Bailey Kovac (4:11.16) and sophomore Noelle Peplowski (4:15.17) finished sixth and eighth, respectively. All three swimmers collected NCAA B Cut marks, while Kovac lowered her career-best time for the second-straight session.
 
Haskett finished eighth in the 100 Backstroke Championship Final with a final time of 53.17.
 
Senior Shelby Koontz finished third in the 100 Butterfly Consolation Final to claim 11th overall with a time of 53.82, while freshman Carla Gildersleeve finished 23rd overall out of the C Final with a time of 54.62.
 
Sophomore Alyssa Wang finished eighth in the Consolation Final with a final score of 247.65. She finished 16th overall in the event to mark her first-career points at the Big Ten Championships.
