IU Mens/Womens Swimming and Diving

The Big Ten Conference announced the men's and women's swimming and diving schedules for the 2021 season over the weekend.
 
The slate is scheduled for conference-only competition during the regular season and was created to ensure maximum flexibility. Meets can be conducted on Friday and/or Saturday and have the flexibility to utilize one or two day meet formats for tri-meets.
 
Both teams will open the '21 campaign by hosting a tri-meet against Michigan and Northwestern on Jan. 15-16. The following weekend, Jan. 22-23, IU will host Ohio State. The regular season will conclude with a tri-meet hosted by Purdue featuring the Hoosiers, Boilermakers and Rutgers Scarlett Knights on Feb. 5-6.
 
The Women's Big Ten Swimming Championships are currently scheduled for Feb. 24-27, while the men's will tentatively be held from March 3-6. The Big Ten Diving Championships will be held at a separate location on Feb. 24-27. Locations for all three events have yet to be determined.
 
Both the men's and women's NCAA Championships will be contested in Greensboro, N.C. The women's event will run from March 17-20 with the men competing from March 24-27.

In the latest CSCAA/TYR Top 25 Coaches Poll (released on Dec. 17, 2020), the Hoosier men are ranked No. 9 nationally, while the women check in at No. 20.

Three current Hoosiers were named to the 2021 USA Swimming National Junior Team. Junior Mikey Calvillo and freshman Maxwell Reich will represent Indiana on the men's side, while sophomore Emily Weiss will compete on the women's side.

Mikey Calvillo
800 Freestyle, 1,500 Freestyle, 400 IM
Calvillo, a two-team All-America honoree, qualified in three events. He ranks second in the 800 Freestyle (8:01.13), third in the 400 IM (4:16.98) and fourth in the 1,500 Freestyle (15:23.51). All three times were recorded at the 2019 Phillips 66 Nationals.
 
Maxwell Reich
100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke
Reich, a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, turned in both of his qualifying times, 1:02.37 in the 100 Breaststroke and 2:14.00 in the 200 Breaststroke, at the 2019 Speedo Junior Nationals. He ranks fourth in both events.
 
Emily Weiss
100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke
Weiss earned All-Big Ten second team honors during her freshman campaign after a runner-up finish in the 100 Breaststroke. She qualified in both the breaststroke events with times of 1:07.56 (100 Breaststroke) and 2:27.36 (200 Breaststroke) at the 2019 Phillips 66 Nationals. Weiss ranks second and fourth, respectively, in the two events.

Season opening meet at home against Michigan and Northwestern.   Men win both defeating Michigan 173 - 127 and defeating Northwestern 241 - 59.  Women beat Northwestern 177 - 117 but lose to Michigan 174 - 126.

Indiana University redshirt junior diver Andrew Capobianco and freshman diver Anne Fowler were honored as Big Ten Divers of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

B1G Men's Diver of the Week
The Holly Springs, N.C., native continues to dominate in the early stages of the 2020-21 season, racking up two more victories against No. 17 Ohio State. He compiled season-best performances in both the 1-meter (417.00) and 3-meter (473.55) events against the Buckeyes. Both scores secured NCAA 'A' Standard marks for the reigning NCAA 3-meter champion.
 
Capobianco has been named the Diver of the Week for the fourth time in his illustrious Indiana career after securing the nod last week as well.
 
Anne Fowler
B1G Women's Diver of the Week
Fowler, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week, upped her standard by winning both the 1-meter (356.10) and the 3-meter (372.75) events against No. 14 Ohio State. Her 1M score broke the program's dual meet record, made her the third-ranked IU performer in the history of the event, and ranks as the fifth-best overall score in Indiana women's diving history. Her 3M score ranks her as the team's fifth-best performer in the event and narrowly missed the dual meet record. Both scores set NCAA 'A' Standard marks.
 
She is the first IU female diver to earn this weekly award from the conference since Jessica Parratto on Jan. 30, 2019.
 
Indiana will be back in the pool on Feb. 6 for a three-team competition featuring host Purdue and Rutgers.

RIVALRY WINNING STREAKS ON THE LINE
The IUSD program has had a long stretch of success against in-state rival Purdue, winning 10-straight dual meet competitions against the Boilers on the men's side dating back to Feb. 6, 2010. The women's program has reeled off nine-straight against Purdue going back to Jan. 22, 2011.
 
FIRST TIME OPPONENT
For the first time since Rutgers joined the Big Ten, the Hoosiers will square off with the Scarlet Knights in a dual meet setting.
 
FROM THE DIVING WELL
For the second-straight weekend, both redshirt junior Andrew Capobianco and freshman Anne Fowler took care of business on the boards. Both athletes swept the 1-meter and 3-meter events and earned Big Ten Diver of the Week laurels.
 
Capobianco compiled season-best, NCAA 'A' Standard performances in both the 1-meter (417.00) and 3-meter (473.55) events against the Buckeyes, while Fowler etched her name in the Hoosier record books in both the 1-meter (356.10) and the 3-meter (372.75) events against No. 14 Ohio State. FROM THE POOL DECK
Sophomore Brendan Burns won four events in the pool, including the 100 Butterfly (47.08), 200 Butterfly (1:44.67), 200 Backstroke (1:44.87), and the 400 Medley Relay (3:11.89) against the 17th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. After claiming Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for his dominant performance in the season-opening sweep of Michigan and Northwestern, junior Jack Franzman earned three more victories against the Buckeyes. He won the 100 Freestyle (43.47), 200 Freestyle Relay (1:19.16), and 400 Medley Relay (3:11.89).
 
On the women's side, sophomore Ashley Turak took home a trio of victories in the 50 Freestyle (22.86), 100 Freestyle (50.11), and 400 Medley Relay (3:40.58), while sophomore Emily Weiss swept the breaststroke events. She won both the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.15) and the 200 Breaststroke (2:12.09).

Indiana Diving Scores Big on Friday

 The Hoosier men's and women's diving teams sent four to Championship Finals on the Friday from the diving well at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center at Purdue.

MEN'S 3-METER DIVE
After winning the 2021 Big Ten Championship on the 1-Meter springboard, redshirt junior Andrew Capobianco finished one spot off the podium in the 3-meter event with an NCAA A Standard mark of 414.80.
 
Junior Cole VanDevender set a career-best mark of 390.20 in the preliminary round to reach the final round. He rounded out the night finishing sixth in the event with a score of 384.05. Both are NCAA B Standard marks.
 
Senior Mory Gould charted the second-highest score in the preliminary round with an NCAA A Standard mark of 395.20. He missed his two middle dives, but finished strong with two dives sniffing the 70-point range to finish in eighth with 340.10 points.
 
Senior Seamus Scotty finished 16th out of the Consolation Final with a score of 307.80. He hit an NCAA C Standard mark of 333.30 in the prelims to advance to the finals.

WOMEN'S PLATFORM DIVE
Freshman Tarrin Gilliland improved on her seed entering the Championship Final with a career-best, NCAA A Standard score of 269.75 in the Platform competition. She placed seventh.
 
NOTABLES
• The men's 3-meter competition marked the first time this season in which Capobianco did not win a springboard event during the 2002-21 season. He held a record of 5-0 on the springboard in the regular season and won the 1-meter competition on Thursday night.
• Hoosier divers registered a total of nine NCAA Standard Scores, including three A Standard marks.
• Gilliland, competing in her first Platform meet of the season, notched an NCAA A Standard mark in the finals.

Indiana Swimming Remains in Third Heading into Final Day

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 21-ranked Indiana swim team held steady in the third spot in the team standings through the fourth day of competition at the 2021 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

100 BACKSTROKE
Freshman Anna Freed improved on her seed spot in a career-best swim in the C Final of the 100 Backstroke. She finished 19th overall with a time of 53.93.
 
100 BREASTSTROKE
Junior Noelle Peplowski was the first Hoosier to touch the wall in the Championship Final of the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 59.66. Sophomore Emily Weiss finished just behind her teammate in fifth with a time of 59.79.
 
Junior Abby Kirkpatrick took 13th with a time of 1:00.62 in the Consolation Final. Freshman Catherine Graham set a career-best with a time of 1:01.52 to finish 19th out of the C Final.  
 
200 BUTTERFLY
Sophomore Carla Gildersleeve finished in the 11th spot in the 200 Butterfly out of the Consolation Final with an NCAA B Cut time of 1:58.89.
 
200 FREESTYLE RELAY
The Hoosier team of sophomore Ashley Turak, senior Laurel Eiber, freshman Ella Ristic, and freshman Elizabeth Broshears hit an NCAA B Cut time of 1:29.12 to finish fourth overall in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

• Peplowski matched her career-best finish in the 100 Breaststroke. She has been in the Championship Final in all three of her seasons with a fourth-place finish in 2020 and a sixth-place effort in 2019.
• Weiss earned her second-straight podium in the 100 Breaststroke after winning silver last season.
• Freed established career bests in the 100 Backstroke in both the preliminary heat and the C Final. Her time of 53.93 also ranks her as the 20th-best performer in the event in program history.

Indiana Finishes Third at 2021 B1G Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

The No. 21-ranked Indiana Hoosiers completed five days of competition at the 2021 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The team finished in third place with 1,066.5 points.
 
For the second-straight season, Ohio State ran away with the team title. The Buckeyes scored 1,584 points. Michigan finished third with 1,326.5 points.
 
100 FREESTYLE
Sophomore Ashley Turak finished fifth overall in the 100 Freestyle with a career-best time of 48.60.
 
Freshman Elizabeth Broshears took 15th out of the Consolation Final with a time of 49.91, while freshman Ella Ristic claimed 16th with a time of 50.01. Out of the C Final, senior Laurel Eiber finished 18th with a time of 49.67.
 
1,650 FREESTYLE
Junior Maggie Wallace took sixth place out of the fourth heat of the timed finals of the mile. She finished with an NCAA B Cut time of 16:15.19. Senior Josie Grote placed ninth with a time of 16:16.38, nearly topping her career-best mark.
 
200 BACKSTROKE
Senior Bailey Kovac outpaced her seed to score crucial points for the Hoosiers with a career-best time of 1:54.07. She finished fourth in the Championship Final.
 
Freshman Anna Freed took fifth place in the Consolation Final with a time of 1:56.62. She finished 13th overall in the event.
 
200 BREASTSTROKE
Indiana scored massive points in the 200 Breaststroke and it started with a Gold medal from sophomore Emily Weiss. She set a career-best mark in winning her first-career Big Ten title with a time of 2:07.20. Junior Noelle Peplowski finished in the silver slot with a time of 2:07.61, while junior Mackenzie Looze claimed fourth with a career-best time of 2:08.62.
 
In the Consolation Final, senior Abby Kirkpatrick tied for 10th with a time of 2:12.13 and freshman Catherine Graham finished 22nd overall out of the C Final with a time of 2:15.54.
 
400 FREESTYLE RELAY
The Indiana team consisting of sophomore Ashley Turak, freshman Elizabeth Broshears, freshman Ella Ristic, and Laurel Eiber finished in fifth with a time of 3:15.87. Turak opened the relay with a split of 48.74.

• Turak set a career-best of 48.75 in the preliminary rounds of the 100 Freestyle, which marked the seventh-fastest time in program history. In the finals, she lowered her mark to 48.60. The time is the fifth-fastest time ever by a Hoosier and makes Turak the third-quickest performer in program history in the event.
• Kovac clocked a career-best 1:54.07 to make her the eighth-fastest performer in the Hoosier record books in the 200 Backstroke.
• The 400 Freestyle Relay time of 3:15.87 ranked as the fifth-fastest time in school history.

HOOSIERS EXTEND REGULAR-SEASON DOMINANCE
The Indiana men's swimming and diving team has been dominant in the regular season since the start of the 2016-17 season, compiling an overall record of 40-3 with a 14-1 Big Ten mark during that span.
 
During the five-year run, the Hoosiers claimed three-straight Big Ten Conference Championship titles from 2017-19.

2020 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The No. 4-ranked Indiana Hoosiers finished third in the 2020 Big Ten Championships with 1,321.5 points. No. 3 Michigan won the team title with 1,548 points to snap Indiana's three-year run of championships. No. 17 Ohio State finished as the runner-up with 1,329 points.
 
Throughout the week, IU racked up a total of 17 medals – nine gold, three silver and five bronze. Indiana won four of the five relays at the Big Ten Championships for a third-straight year – the longest stretch in program history.
 
Current senior Bruno Blaskovic won the Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships and Brendan Burns was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
 
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Indiana has won 27 conference titles on the men's side, the second-highest number in the league. The Hoosiers trail only the Wolverines (39) in conference titles. IU has finished inside the top-3 at the Big Ten Championships in 10-straight seasons.

No. 8 Hoosiers in Second at B1G Championships

The No. 8-ranked men's swimming team sits in second place after the opening night of action at the 2021 Big Ten Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio. The team scores include both relays from the first night as well as the three diving events contested at Purdue over the weekend.
 
200 MEDLEY RELAY
The men's 200 Medley Relay team consisting of sophomore Brendan Burns, junior Zane Backes, freshman Tomer Frankel, and junior Jack Franzman won the second heat of the timed final with an NCAA A Cut mark of 1:23.35. The time earned the Hoosiers a bronze medal.
 
800 FREESTYLE RELAY
The 800 Freestyle Relay squad of Frankel, Burns, sophomore Jacob Destrampe, and junior Van Mathias registered Indiana's second NCAA A Cut time of the session with a mark of 6:16.12. The Hoosiers finished in the bronze position. Frankel led off the event with a 200 split of 1:33.17, a career-best time.

• The 800 Freestyle Relay time, also an NCAA A Standard, is the seventh-fastest time recorded in the event in program history.
• The team's time is the 12th-best time currently in the NCAA.  
• Frankel's opening 200-yard split makes him the fourth-best performer in the history of the event at Indiana. He trails only Blake Pieroni, Zach Apple and Mohamed Samy on the performer list.
