Hoosiers Top Hawkeyes to Open Big Ten Play

The 50th-ranked Indiana women's tennis team started Big Ten play in style on Saturday inside the IU Tennis Center, downing the Iowa Hawkeyes, 4-3.

The Hoosiers (11-4, 1-0) struck first taking the doubles point to start. Indiana's Sarah McLean and Natalie Whalen won by a 6-3 margin at No. 1 doubles.  The IU freshmen duo of Madison Appel and Danielle Wolf followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 to take the point from Iowa (9-5, 0-2).

In Singles, Indiana's Stephanie Smith made quick work for Iowa's Annette Dohanics with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 4.  Whalen followed with a victory at No. 5 over Adorabol Huckleby in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.

As she has done throughout the year, McLean, IU's lone senior, clinched the team win for Indiana as she got past Krsiten Thoms in the No. 3 match, 6-4, 6-2.

The Hoosiers will now hit the road for three straight Big Ten matches. The road trip starts on Saturday, March 19 at Rutgers at 6 p.m. ET. Men play Texas Tech in CA tomorrow @ 3 pm ET.
