What's the solution?

Recommended Posts

There has been so much uproar over Indiana's start to the season, rightfully so, but the only solution most are offering is "Fire Tom Crean." Say Crean gets fired and another coach is brought in, do you think this team automatically buys in to his defensive scheme? I'm not so sure.. And what makes anyone think a coach like Brad Stevens or Bill Self would want to inherit a mess like Indiana right now? Those are the two names I see being thrown around. It just doesn't seem feasible to me. It's pretty obvious Glass isn't actually going to fire Crean..

I think one thing that needs to change RIGHT NOW is how Crean handles guys who don't play defense.. You flat out miss an assignment or wander into no-man's-land and leave your shooter wide open, good luck getting those splinters out of your ***. Let your guy drive the lane without putting up a fight? Have a seat. Don't box out and your man gets an easy putback, get your *** on the bench. I don't see any of that currently. I see excuses and a reminder of how early it is..

If you're Yogi, Troy, Blackmon, or Bryant and you have NBA aspirations but you don't get playing time, then maybe things get real. Then maybe you play with a sense of urgency.. With as much offensive talent as there is on this team, if the starting 5 would even attempt defense, or try to box out, they will be a tournament team. If not, I fear those douchey Duke know-it-alls are right about the NIT.

Anyone else have any realistic solutions?

If Indiana is indeed an NIT team, the solution will not be something anyone has to discuss.

Crean has not done a good job prioritizing.  If the rumors are true about promised starting spots and getting kids to the next level, he has prioritized the agendas of kids rather than the product on the floor; which for ANY coach will lead to a lack of focus on team defense.

If these kids don't care about their team, a complete house cleaning and cultural overhaul is needed.

We're not going after Bill Self.  Stop with that.  You can also stop with the "what makes anyone think _______" questions because college teams can be turned around in a matter of 2 seasons.   A current mess does not equal a long term problem; and any coach who takes over Indiana will inherit a mess, so it doesn't matter if it's Brad Stevens or Steve Bradley.

The kids we have are driven by personal ego.  Yogi isn't changing now.  You bench him?  He'll be more selfish when he IS on the floor.  The solution will happen organically.   We all know the deal now...it's no secret.

We have a whole thread to the one solution that will fix it all. You can teach defense, it's just not being taught. The players that we have on the bench can't play much better defense than any of the starters as well so...

You could probably walk into the HPER and find better defensive players than some of the kids on the team (lol)

Defense isn't just the problem, our offense is hard to watch at times.

Remember the culture problems Crean spoke of when he arrived here? I'm afraid there might be more of that on the team currently than what we (or Crean himself) would care to admit or want to believe.

And if there's a culture problem on the team (whether it be players, coaches or whomever), I'm not sure that can be solved mid-season. At least not solved and still win ball games.

Good point. If there is indeed a culture problem then making a change would have little effect.

This. Would love to know why he dealt with some issues but not a couple others still on the team. I said two years ago TW should be gone.

Why? He's a huge great for big plays and getting the crowd involved. Are there drug rumors or something?
