What kind of training can players receive on the off-season?

Recommended Posts

This is a question that has been on my mind since the WSU loss. We know we need to get some serious development in defense but there are all kinds of NCAA rules on players being able to practice. here are my questions to get this thread started and educate us all on what they can do/can't do to get the team ready for next season.

1. Can the players go to outside clinics or instructors to learn skills?

2. What are the time constraints on team practice during the off season?

This question was answered in yesterday's ITH Mailbag. Per Bozich:

"Here is the rule for what teams can do in the summer, per NCAA rules adopted back in 2012: “In men’s basketball, a student-athlete who is enrolled in summer school may engage in required weight-training, conditioning and skill-related instruction for up to eight weeks (not required to be consecutive weeks). Participation in such activities shall be limited to a maximum of eight hours per week with not more than two hours per week spent on skill-related instruction. An individual who is not eligible to use the exception to summer school enrollment (Bylaw 17.1.6.2.1.1.4.1) may participate only during the period of the institution’s summer term or terms (opening day of classes through last day of final exams) in which he is enrolled.”

So no more than two hours per week can be spent on skill-related instruction with the coaching staff. Last summer with the Montreal trip, IU was able to have 10 practices leading up to it, which is one of the major advantages of taking a foreign tour once every four seasons. – Alex Bozich"

Damn you hova!

Lol just helping out buddy!

What about clinics? Outside coaches?

I believe they can go to whomever they want. I read in SI where Justin Anderson of UVA spent a chunk of last summer working out in Chicago with someone (I really can't remember who, some sort of coach I believe) and completely revitalized his perimeter game.

There should be a DVD made of each player that showed when they did things properly and where the did things wrong during the season. When I played football, watching film (yes it was film) of the game was a chance to see what your play looks like to others. Sometimes I was embarrassed by what I saw. I remembered how things looked to people in the stands when I was on the field and changed the way I played.

Driving into double teams and making bad decisions carry more weight when you have to watch yourself. I would suspect they can recognize a bad play when they watch others play. It is a good learning experience to watch yourself screw up. I know they watch video, but the staff could make each player an instructional video starring the player.
