He also won Missouri Gatorade POY.

Athletic achievement: He batted .414 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI, leading the Wildcats (21-10) to the Class 4 district championship game this past season. The state’s No. 3 ranked prospect as rated by Prep Baseball Report, Matheny produced an .820 slugging percentage with 22 of his 46 hits going for extra bases. The son of current St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, he was a Second Team All-State selection as a junior in 2015.

Academic excellence: Matheny has maintained a B average.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally as an elementary school tutor and a youth baseball coach, and also completed a service-mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

“Jake Matheny is the best individual player that we have played against this year,” said Jon Mueller, head coach at Lutheran North High. “In addition to his offensive prowess, he is also a great defensive catcher. We did not try to run on him at all and he handles his pitchers very well.”
