Well Crean still has his job so I'd say it's not likely Wilson loses his.

The difference for me is that Crean actually had noticeably better results each season until last season.

What are the realistic odds Wilson is let go at the end of the year?

Considering how long it took to can Mallory, probably slim.  If Maryland was actually calling out our plays (and as awful as we looked, I wouldn't be surprised if they knew what we were running) it's a pretty big indictment of our coaching though.

Gone by sunset of the last game.
The difference between Wilson and Bill Mallory(Doug's daddy, for you youngsters), is that Bill produced winning teams. In 1985, like today, you could walk up to the box office and buy a ticket for ANY game. Midway through his second season, sell outs, you know, like Michigan has. Coach Mallory led us to several bowl games in his tenure, produced scores of pro players, and a Heisman runner-up. And all this by recruit inn Indiana first. Then the all-wise Alumni Association began bellyaching about no major bowl appearances.
Wilson, on the other hand has changed the IU uniforms to look like Oklahoma, recorded four consecutive losing sesons(soon to be five), failed in clock management, blamed his failures on a defensive coordinator, and instituted a play call system that even Maryland can defeat! Where are the bellyaching bums now? Not even a winning season, let alone minor bowl!
Please swallow your pride for ol' IU and support the firing of this bum!

Make no mistake Mallory absolutely deserved his fair share of blame, he's been an awful DC every stop of his career and put a historically inept defense on the field last year.  That doesn't mean I don't think any of it falls on Wilson, I've said before and say again I think he's too offensive oriented.

it's amazing to me the problems that transcend IU football regardless of head coach...

bring in a new guy...doesn't matter...it's the same story, different name behind the headset...

schitty defense

poor play call

inability to close out close games (not counting Mizzou, it's far deeper than one exception)

crap clock management

awful special teams...

Cincinnati brought in a guy like Tuberville. Why cant we do that?

look at Louisville...

they have brought in

Bobby Petrino

Charlie Strong

Kragthorpe was crap

Bobby Petrino the 1st time...

John L Smith

Howard Schnellenberger...

if freaking UofL can get to the Orange Bowl, and produce bowl seasons year after year...

surely to God IU can...

but why won't we?

Tom Jurich, the UofL AD, has the the attitude of win no matter how much it costs. It is not just football. If they had a tiddlywinks team, he would do whatever it takes to have the best tiddlywinks team possible. He is great at raising the funds needed so that he can get the best possible coach and put those teams in the best possible facilities. Louisville is lucky to have him. Several schools have come calling on for his services.

It's only a matter of time before people start calling for Glass's head. Really like the guy, but if the Crean and Wilson hires go south, he's in trouble.

I think Glass is a descent AD, especially since his background is in law. We have made great strides in some sports, baseball for example. IMO Jurich wouldn't have let one of the so called best recruiters in the country leave his program unless he got a head coaching job somewhere else.

The worst thing about this is that when talking to an Alumni Association bigshot about why Bill Mallory was canned, he replied, "he just couldn't get us to a major bowl."

Bill Mallory's Big Ten record in his final three seasons was 4-20.  1-15 in his last two seasons.  I think that had a lot more to do with letting him go than not getting to a major bowl.  I was on campus for his last three seasons and attended every single home game.  By the 1996 season, the writing was pretty much on the wall.  I also think he was loyal to a fault in regards to George Belu.  The 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense wasn't cutting it anymore.  It wasn't the Vaughn Dunbar and AT days anymore.  Sure, Alex Smith (when healthy) was pretty good but...one thing Bill was always pretty good about was fielding a stout defense.  I think we needed a different offensive philosophy, not just for the sake of on-field results but for the sake of recruiting.  Watching guys like John Paci, Chris Dittoe, Jay Rodgers and Adam Greenlee play the QB position those years with not much of any skill talent outside of Alex Smith...it was painful.

Having said those things, you are absolutely correct that IU did not do a good job of filling the position once they let Mallory go.  And part of that ties into the reason those coaching hires were doomed from the get-go, the lack of financial commitment to the football program.  Even as Mallory led IU to the verge of another Rose Bowl in 1987, the football program would never get the commitment that was needed to make what Mallory had built to that point turn into something that looked more like what Barry Alvarez did at Wisconsin.  Which I will always insist Mallory would have been our Alvarez if we struck while the iron was hot and made the appropriate investments in the facilities at the right time.

Current state, we finally put some real money into the football facilities and renovating the stadium.  We are spending more on our coaches relative to the past, but still near the bottom of the league.  I think as a program we are better positioned to be successful now as compared to the past but to clear that final hurdle, I think we need to put the final piece in place and spend what it takes to bring in a more proven coaching staff.  That or give CKW the resources to hire the best assistants possible.  Talk about regrets, I understand the health issue angle after Coach Hep passed but the one guy I regret us not hiring right now is Jerry Kill.  He is doing a tremendous job at Minnesota.
