#IUMS vs Butler

Recommended Posts

I do not believe Todd Yeagley is the man for this job. The national title was amazing (I was there for both College Cup games and get chills thinking about it) but that regular season was such a grind and then we all know 2013 was a brutal campaign.

That's 200 minutes without a goal for IU, that's ridiculous

last year we couldn't protect a lead to save our lives and now we can't get one either apparently

I don't think todd yeagley should be questioned too heavily, at least not yet.  with three coaching national championships (1 as hc, 2 as assistant), a hermann trophy and mls and international playing experience, plus being groomed by the godfather himself, todd is highly revered and possesses as much soccer IQ as anyone.  he's annually bringing in great recruits and forming top sos schedules that garner excitement, attention and top recruits and transfers, as it should be for the top mens college soccer program in the country.

the execution on the field is on the players.  a system is set up for them to succeed.  the offense is actually getting shots at a high rate, they're just not finishing yet.  any year following such a high turnover rate, especially if you lose your entire starting offense, it takes time to establish chemistry and confidence and start producing at a high level.  we lost kotlov, petts, bushue, corrado, thompson and mares so this year's offense is filled with players who have been primarily subs.  it's talented, though.

cant say players dislike playing for him.  in his first and second years here as head coach, 2010 and 11, we advanced to the ncaa tournament 3rd round after lackluster regular seasons.  in 2012 we dominated as an underdog 16-seed to win it all.  last year we rallied after a disappointing regular season to win the conference tournament and give akron a tough 3-2 game in the opening round.  those accomplishments required unified belief and 'sticktoitiveness', a product of a great coach, especially for amateur athletes.

having said all that, his record here has deservedly raised an eyebrow or two at 51-30-14 with a conference record of 13-9-4.  his teams have lost or tied plenty of games they should've won.  that's sports, though, especially with soccer.  his teams have also won games as an underdog, evidenced by that 8th star.

So 2010 and 2011 were lackluster regular seasons, 2012 was as well but we won the title, and 2013 was just brutal

so that is four straight lackluster regular seasons

I don't care if you win a title in there, four straight mediocre to bad seasons provides so much negative predictive value that it is scary to think about it

my last comment on this, because after some research I discovered even I was being a bit too hard on him...

that's concentrating on the negative and oddly placing superior value on the regular season as opposed to the postseason.

todd yeagley and indiana has the second-most accomplished postseason resume in the country since 2010, the year he became head coach, along with akron and behind north carolina.  only three other programs stack up in that span:

north carolina --  3 trips to the third round, all 3 going further, 1 national championship

indiana --  3 trips to the third round, 1 going further, 1 national championship

akron --  3 trips to the third round, 1 going further, 1 national championship

notre dame --  2 trips to the third round, 1 going further, 1 national championship

maryland --  4 trips to the third round, 3 going further, no national championship

ucla --  3 trips to the third round, 2 going further, no appearance in the championship game

even during a time when we're not dominating the big ten as usual, we're still very firmly in elite status.

small samples are somehow better indicators of future success than large samples?? This is ABSURD!

THE REGULAR SEASON has wayyyy more positive predictive value than the postseason and in the regular season we have become a middle of the pack B1G program. Yes, we won a title and caught lightning in a bottle but that is NOT SUSTAINABLE
