SCOUTING MARYLAND The Terrapins two conference victories came against Ohio State and Michigan State, as they dropped the series to both teams, as well as a three-game sweep from Minnesota. Outside of the Buckeyes and Spartans, the only other common opponents between IU and Maryland are Bethune-Cookman (Maryland won, 3-2) and Virginia (Maryland lost, 7-1). The Terps' offense has been strong this season as they are batting .305 as a team, which is third in the Big Ten. Maryland has five hitting above .300, led by Taylor Okada (.426, 40 hits, 20 runs) and Sammie Stefan (.350, 36 hits, 25 RBI, 5 HR). In the circle, the team's ERA is 5.26 with Sydney Golden (3.63 ERA, 11-6, 110.0 IP) and Sami Main (4.65 ERA, 3-7, 58.2 IP) carrying most of the innings. Maryland and Indiana have met 13 times previously, with all but one of those meetings coming as conference games. Last year, the Hoosiers swept the three-game set in College Park as Bella Norton led Indiana with a .600 average, three hits and four RBI. Taylor Lambert also had an impressive showing, collecting four hits and six RBI with two home runs. In all, Indiana outscored Maryland 28-5 in the sweep. Tara Trainer earned two of the victories while Emily Goodin collected the other win. LAST TIME OUT Indiana split a Wednesday doubleheader with Purdue, winning game one, 2-1, before falling in nine innings in the finale, 5-4. Junior Bella Norton led the offense for Indiana, collecting three total hits. The Hoosiers dropped three games at No. 23 Michigan last weekend, including a 7-6 heartbreaker on Sunday as the Wolverines used a two-run double to walk it off. However, IU can take some positives in the loss as the six runs scored was the most the Wolverines have surrendered since March 9 and was tied for the second-most given up all season. NEWS AND NOTES • Indiana's nightcap loss to Purdue was just the second time all season Indiana has lost after taking the lead into the seventh inning. The Hoosiers are now 24-2 in that category. • The Hoosiers came in at No. 39 in this week's NCAA RPI. The Terrapins sit at No. 88. • At 29-14, the Hoosiers already have the most victories in a season since 2016 (29-25). • Indiana has stolen 111 bases this season, more than double any other Big Ten program as Ohio State has the second-most with 52. The Hoosiers are third in the nation in total stolen bases. • Sophomore Maddie Westmoreland collected a pair of base hits in game one Wednesday before seeing her reached base streak come to an end at 13 games in the nightcap. The highlight of Westmoreland's weekend in Ann Arbor was a two-home run outing on Saturday, marking her first multi-homer game of her career. Westmoreland has improved her season average to .304 as she has been batting .412 since the start of the Ohio State series on March 22. In that stretch, she has 14 total hits, including four multi-hit outings. In addition, Jenkins has stolen 17 bases this season, bringing her career total to 56, which is good for sixth-most in Indiana program history. • Junior Emily Goodin is having a career season in the circle as her 1.96 ERA is the best of her three years at Indiana. With 95 strikeouts already, she's also on pace to set a new career best (in 2018, she had 101). Goodin has earned the start in five of the last 10 games for the Hoosiers. • Fans at Andy Mohr Field will notice the addition of extra seating as bleachers have been installed on the concourse level down the first base line, allowing for 200 more seats. In the second, we loaded the bases for Grayson Radcliffe with 2 outs and she clears the bases with a 3-run double. All 3 runs were unearned as a result of 2 Maryland errors. IU leading 5-0. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 Emily Goodin on the mound to start game #1 of today's doubleheader. Reminder that Sunday's game has been moved to today because of weather concerns and will start approximately 45 min. after the end of the first game. Inning #1: Goodin walks the Maryland leadoff batter who moves to second on a sacrifice bunt and comes home on a single up the middle and it's 1-0 Maryland. Another single and Maryland with runners on first and second with 2 outs. Goodin struggling early as she walks another batter to load the bases. She's given up 2 walks and 2 hits and she's getting the quick hook as Natalie Foor comes on to pitch facing a bases loaded situation with 2 outs. And it goes from bad to worse as Foor gives up a single and 2 more Maryland runs score to make it 3-0 with runners on first and second. A force out at third ends the Maryland inning. With 2 outs in our half of the first, Grayson Radcliffe gets on base with a single followed by Maddie Westmoreland getting hit by a pitch. Katie Lacefield gets a single to drive in Radcliffe and on the throw to third, Lacefield advances to second so we have 2 runners on but Bella Norton flies out to end the inning. After 1 inning Maryland leads 3-1. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 Inning #2: With 2 outs, Maryland puts a runner on base with a single to left but Foor strikes out the next batter for the third out. We go down in order on just 5 Maryland pitches. Maryland leads after 2 innings 3-1. Inning #3: Foor give up a leadoff homer to make it a 4-1 Maryland lead. She gets the next 2 batters out and Josie Wood comes in to pitch and immediately gives up a single. No idea why this pitching change was made as there's no radio or game stream for an explanation. A force out at second ends the Maryland half. Lambert leads us off with a single; advanced to second on a sac. bunt; stole third. Radcliffe walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch so we have runners on second and third with one out but Westmoreland hits into an inning ending double play. Score after 3 innings Maryland leading 4-1. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 Inning #4: Wood remains on the mound and walks the leadoff hitter. A bunt single puts Maryland runners on first and second. That's Maryland's 7th base hit and they've drawn 3 walks. Wood gets a K but a ground out to short moves the runners to 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. A fly ball to right ends the inning for Maryland. Lacefield flies out; Bella Norton draws a walk. Paige Chitwood runs for Norton; advances to second on a wild pitch; to third on a Baez ground out. Galovich draws a 2-out walk and then steals second. Maryland then gifts us a run with a wild pitch scoring Chitwood and Norton takes third. Brittany Ford pinch hitting for Hart laces a single to center scoring Galovich and it's a 4-3 game. Another wild pitch moves Ford up to second but Taylor Lambert strikes out to end the inning. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 Inning #5: Maryland puts its leadoff hitter on base with a single who's then forced at second but still has a runner on first who advances to second on an infield ground out. Wood walks the next batter putting runners on first and second with 2 outs but gets a ground out to second base to end the inning. Maryland makes a pitching change with our Hoosiers coming to bat in the 5th and gets Gabbi Jenkins to fly out but Grayson Radcliffe then doubles to center field and advances to third on yet another Maryland wild pitch their fourth of the day. Maddie Westmoreland fouls out for out #2 and Katie Lacefield grounds out to end the inning. After 5 innings Maryland still leading 4-3. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 Inning #6: Wood gets the Maryland leadoff batter out then gives up a double. She gets out #2 on a pop-up but that's all for her and Tara Trainer takes the mound. Trainer gets the third out on a pop-up. In our half of the sixth, Norton and Baez both fly out. Galovich singles to left and Hart beats out a bunt to put runners on first and second with 2 outs but a Lambert pop-up ends the inning. One more chance to pull this game out. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 Inning #7: Maryland puts a runner on first with a 1-out single but nothing more happens. Jenkins, Radcliffe and Westmoreland will try to get something going but Jenkins starts us off with a ground out. Radcliffe gets on the hard way - hit by a pitch. Westmoreland doubles to center but Radcliffe is cut down at the plate trying to score. :-( Lacefield draws a walk to put runners on first and second but we have 2 outs with Bella Norton at bat but Norton flies out to end the game. Maryland wins 4-3. Today's second game expected to start around 5:15. I'm not available to post updates for this game. OliviaPope40 1 Quote
