Joey pitched 2 innings last night, gave up 4 hits, 0 runs/walks and had 4 Ks. He's currently 1-1 with a 0.75 ERA and 14Ks with the Blueclaws.

In other words, he's pitching really well in relief after having never done it before. That's surprising.

Joey DeNato, a 19th round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies organization in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, recently returned "home" for IU baseball's Alumni Game in October and sat down with IUHoosiers.com. A San Diego, Calif., native, DeNato is Indiana's all-time career leader in wins (37), strikeouts (297) and innings pitched (369.1).

IU's single-season record holder in innings pitched (109.1) and wins (13) in 2014, DeNato was part of IU's rise to national prominence.

"The whole four years I was here, we started at the very bottom, projected last in the Big Ten," DeNato said. "From there, I was part of the program when we made it all the way to the College World Series and we were projected to finish first in the Big Ten. Pretty much all of that sums up how awesome it was being here and how much of a blast it was."

The BlueClaws held off Hickory with Joey DeNato getting the final six outs of the game as Lakewood topped Hickory 3-2 on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Park.

Hickory had the tying run on second base with one out in the 9th inning but DeNato, who earned his second save, got Jose Cardona to fly out to right and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to strike out swinging to end the game.
