James Blackmon Jr. interview on WNDE

Recommended Posts

Pretty good interview with JB2 here, audio only. Seems like a pretty nice kid with a good head on his shoulders. His maturity as a freshman will be great for our crew, especially for the other 2014 guys coming in.

Well what?

Just not things I wanted to hear. He basically said he easily could've been the next Lyles. Personally, I think he chose IU because he feels he can get more PT and make it to the NBA quicker

I, too, understand that sentiment based on how he described it.

Here is my take:  The Blackmons are definitely thinking about the NBA, strongly.

I think he wants to be at IU, first and foremost.

I think the family understands that in today's world of basketball, the hoopla with SCOUTS, EVALUATORS, MEDIA members, BLOGGERS, etc is a driving force for building a player's image and brand.

Blackmon was not getting all that fanfare from people because he was committed so early.  Thus, he decommits and the big dogs start chasing, UK, MSU, UNC, MICH, etc.  This move raises is status symbol and NAME within the basketball world.  People pay attention and take notice.  Betters his chances as a one and done or two and done because he is a popular name now.

Then once he got the fanfare he probably deserved, he recommitted back to IU.  HE IS ON EVERYBODIES RADAR NOW.

The way he tells the commitment story, which I have heard told 3-4 times the same exact way enforces to the listener that, "hey, I was good enough to go to UK, but CHOSE NOT!"

Pretty much everyone knew that this was the case.  Going into that day it was assumed that he was gone to Kentucky and he changed his mind at last minute.  The 247 Crystal Ball was crazy that day.  All of the reporters flipped at last minute.

[/quote] That was an awesome surprise. I had been optimistic about him recommitting until the day of his announcement. Thought for sure he was going to UK.

You act like you were surprised? Pretty much everyone thought he was UK bound when he de-committed.

Noah said the same things last year. If we want to land 5* kids we need to get used to it. At least he is being honest. I loved the kids that stayed 4 years but he said it well, his goal is to play in the NBA and it is hard to fault him for that.

Really enjoyed the interview. I like his maturity and his confidence. He knows he can be the scoring threat that we desperately needed. I'm going to love watching him play. Personally, I don't care if JBjr is one and done or not. I'm very happy he's a Hoosier. My message to JBjr is the same that I gave to Noah. Stay as long as you like.
