Mike Woodson Fired

Recommended Posts

Woody is a very good basketball coach, and having been in the league as long as he has he wouldn't leave to be an assistant to a coach like Crean who's resume' isn't as good as his own. As for making it past the second round of the playoffs as tantamount to success as a head coach, remember the Hawks won 13 games the year he started, and they had been coached by Terry Stotts who is now the coach at Portland, who has made the playoffs and probably will get past the second round. Is Stotts better than Woody?...REALLY?....I'd say your measuring stick is slightly off. So from 13 wins to 53, not too bad, and the Knicks hadn't been to the playoffs since what 2000 and D'Antoni wouldn't have gotten the Knicks as far as Woody did, he'd already lost the team. The man is tough minded, defense oriented, experienced and a Hoosier! He'll land well on his feet and in the league, just a matter of time and where he wants to coach, in the NBA there are a lot of places you just wouldn't want to coach. Great thing for Woody, he just got fired from one of the worst ran franchises in the league, no picks this year, big money options to Stoudemire and Barngiani and the options are the players not the teams and if they choose to stay, the Knicks are over the cap! Blessings come in strange ways some times! Good for Woody, out just in time!

Neat regular season success in the NBA. That is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things, dude is a slightly above average in the NBA.

Isn't everyone not named George Karl, Popovich, and Spoelstra just above average?

I'd like to see what Spoelstra can do with a team that is actually human.

Doc Rivers, and Tom Thibodeau are probably considered in the upper echelon by most people. And there are arguments for Vogel, Lionel Hollins, to be in that group. And it is early but you can make the case for Steve Clifford. Honestly I'm in the camp that Woodson is extremely overrated as a coach, so I'm biased against the guy

How can you put Lionel Hollins near that group when he isn't a head coach? He just got fired a year ago...

I think Thibodeau is the best coach in the league besides Popovich. I can't think of a close third.

His contract wasn't renewed, because he was asking for a lot more money than Memphis was willing to put out there. You can question why he hasn't been hired by others, but the job he did with Memphis was incredible

I agree completely. Was just wondering why he was listed even though he isn't a head coach currently. I think he'll be back in the next couple of years. He's a pretty good coach.

Forgot to mention Rick Carlisle, he is up there. Another guy that it is probably too early is Hornacek, but his name is worth following

Doc Rivers eh?  Go look up his career numbers as a coach.  In his first 7 full seasons (not counting the year he was fired for a 1-10 start) he missed the playoffs 3 times and never advanced past the first round in those other 4 seasons.  Strangely enough, his coaching career took a rather sharp turn upward once he had a boatload of superstar talent dropped onto his roster, then suddenly he was an amazing coach I guess?  It is a players league and while I'm not going to argue that coaches do not matter, the talent definitely does matter.  The best teams generally win NBA playoff series, it isn't March Madness.  Doc Rivers doesn't turn water into wine.  He needs the horses just like any other NBA coach.  I don't think any coach would have gotten much better playoff results with the teams Woodson coached.  He had some good, not great teams that had a definite ceiling.

I wholeheartedly agree with ya on this. There's 10-15 just above average coaches. Disagree with some of you about Woody. I think it would most definitely be an upgrade over CTC. Just my nickels worth.

I mean technically you can say the same thing about any great coach who has had great postseason success. I don't know how highly I would put Doc, but when you hear analysts talk about the best coaches his name is always bandied about.

I would love to see Woodson back at IU in any capacity. He was born a Hoosier and understands what it takes to be successful as a player and coach. Maybe Glass could hire him as some type of consultant to mens basketball and act as liason between Glass and Crean. Woodson still has a year left on his Knicks contract and I'm not sure how his pay would be affected if he takes another head job. I know this would never happen but Glass needs to think outside the box to turn the program around or both he and Crean may be waiting in the unemployment line very soon.
