Indiana Transfers Impact This Season

[quote name="Hovadipo" post="52903" timestamp="1395701314"]My thing is, at least 3 (rumors floating around about 2 others) transferred. 5 people transferring doesn't happen too often from what I've seen. Counting Noah, almost half of our team is gone due to early departure. Add in Sheehey, Gordon, and Howard, and that is the type of turnover that no program can be successful with.

Pretty sure in the last 24 hours that everyone on the team has been involved in one transfer rumor or another. Lots of crap is being flung against the walls of Assembly Hall.

I've seen Calomeris and Fagan. Not contributors, but they're still on the team. I have no legitimate sources or anything, just what's been floating around on the twitterverse and I might have seen it here, but not 100% sure.

Oh no. If it was those 2, I would be in a dark room crying.

Experience is more than just playing time. It's having veterans who can help show the new players what is expected of them. When to train. How to train. Help them to learn the plays. Help teach them where they need to position themselves on defense. Practice against them. Having upper classmen is important.

While we are unlikely to miss any of them directly on the court, we are likely to miss them, well maybe not Hollowell, in indirect ways that are difficult to measure.

I'm not sure Marlin and Hollowell were veterans poised to lead a squad

I really don't understand all the consternation over these departures. Transfers are normal occurrences throughout the NCAA programs. There are 13+ players on every team that think they should be starting, and bench time is not always spent thinking about  how the game is progressing. High school stars expect to be college stars.

I look at Kentucky and expect similar scenarios. Two highly recruited players (Marcus Lee and Derek Willis, remember them?) are sitting long and tall at the far end of the Kentucky bench. A few of the UK players will go pro, but another big class is coming in and expecting to play immediately. Wonder what those two are thinking.

Would you be more concerned if instead of Hollowell, Etherington, and Marlin transferring it were Stan, Troy, and Yogi? I mean after all transfers are a normal part of college basketball?

Good point. Perhaps what is concerning though is that we seem to be struggling to develop upperclassmen leaders. We had Hulls and Vic two years ago and mature players to support like Watford and Zeller. Austin may not have been a leader but he could have filled the mature support player. Same with Mo. Y

Just goes to show it's not all doom and gloom around here. Transfers happen, these particular ones won't hurt IU in the least.

The answer would be "yes", but my point addresses those players further down the food chain. When you have starters and "first off the bench players" leaving, it would mean there is systemic problem within the program, not the case here. A revitalization of the  team can and will bring positive results.

Remember the Knight transfers: Bob Bender, Rich Valivicious, Lawrence Funderburke, Delray Brooks, Rick Calloway. Those hurt, but the world did not end.

The players that left needed to go for their own success and for the teams. We now can replace and upgrade. I'm confident next year will be fun to watch the growth.!

Hey 41, what do the numbers look like if you factor in the seniors that are leaving?

I think the transfers hurt a little just because if you include the seniors, we are losing over half of our minutes. I think we can recover from this though.

I purposely left out the seniors because I wanted to show the transfers are no big deal at all. Seniors moving on are normal for all teams. Our senior class really wasn't that pivotal to this team from a statistical standpoint. Nothing like last year anyway. I can take a look at total departures this evening.

People keep talking about "high turnover" as ominous in and of itself, but (and I'm sure I'm not the first to point this out) high turnover is a big deal when the people you're losing are Vic, Cody, Jordy, et al. High turnover from a great squad is different from high turnover from a squad as frustrating as this year's was. At this point, not really anywhere to go but up.

I'd heard rumblings about Hollowell all season on this board, but I don't think I really grasped how bad things were until I read Crean's statement about JH's transfer. Whew. It's painfully obvious that their relationship is like ICE. It wouldn't matter if he was a Jordan-level talent - he'll never contribute in a meaningful way if he's alienated his coach and teammates with his attitude, which from all appearances, he has.

I've done my share of grousing this season just like we all have, but I'm not sweating this. Onwards and upwards, etc.
