Couple things... Indiana has a long history prior to Assembly Hall...  Secondly, Traditions change over time.  Traditions are added and taken away.  Time to accept it and move on.

A quick timeline for you...

  • 1900 Indiana Basketball played their first game
  • 1917 - Games played in Men's Gymnasium
  • 1928 - Games played in the Fieldhouse
  • 1960 - Games Played in the New Fieldhouse
  • 1971 - Assembly Hall Built
  • 1970's - CandyStripes  "At the time they were in keeping with the fashion trends of the 1970s"
  • 1975 Martha the Mop Lady began
  • 1980 - William Tell Began
  • 1987 - Indiana's tradition of winning National Championships ends
  • 2000- Martha was removed (met with criticism)
  • 2000 - Indiana's tradition of only hiring white head coaches ends. (met with criticism)
  • 2005 - Advertisements appeared in Assembly Hall (met with criticism)
  • 2005 - New Scoreboard added to Assembly Hall (met with criticism)
  • 2009 - Martha was added back (met with criticism)
  • 2010 - Tradition of IU team practicing in Assembly Hall ends with Cook Hall opening.
  • 2010 - Costumes arrived at Assembly Hall (met with criticism)
  • 2011 - Big Heads arrived in Assembly Hall (met with criticism)
  • 2011 - "This is Indiana" began to play in Assembly Hall (met with criticism)
  • 2013 - Sweet 16 Ring Tradition began (met with A TON OF WARRANTED criticism)
  • 2013 - Televisions added underneath Balcony sections.
  • 2014 - New #MadeInMarch jerseys (met with criticism)

People have been wearing costumes at AH since 05, when I saw a game against OSU. The other stuff you listed such as non-white coaches and martha the mop lady is just that, nonsense. Not much criticism towards the scoreboard or adverts either.
