However unlikely it might be, there could be a four-way tie for fourth in the Big Ten regular season at 9-9 with Iowa, Nebraka and OSU all possibly finishing with that record as well as IU. Unless I'm missing something, the seeding tie-breaker is best winning percentage in head-to-head competition against the other three. To get to 9-9, we'd have to beat Nebraska, which would make us 3-1 against those teams.

I said it's unlikely, but who foresaw Illinois beating MSU Saturday in East Lansing? The fact that it's still on the table is remarkable IMO.

I seem to remember someone being of the opinion that being the "4 seed" was a lock to get you into the NCAA.

Yep, you're too young to get it.  I'll explain.  (I'm doing this from memory without looking anything up, so if anyone wants to add to or correct an error feel free).  

 

One year when the B1G was particularly weak it sent only four teams to the NCAA.  IU was not one of those teams.  The prevailing thought, which turned out to be true, was that the top 3 teams would get in and the fourth team would be the winner of the 4/5 game which was the 4 seed IU and the 5 seed Minny.  This was when there were only 11 teams in the B1G and both the 4 and 5 got a bye to Friday.  

 

IU came out and laid an egg.  I want to say they lost by about 17 points and looked awful.  It was pretty clear at that point Minny was going to be the fourth B1G team in the NCAA.  When asked about IU's tourney chances in his post game press conference Mike Davis said, "We're the 4 seed," about 20+ times.  It was one of his many bizarro pressers. 

 

For many years after being the "4 seed" in the B1G tournament was a frequent IU message board joke.
