Rapid Reaction IU vs UW

Recommended Posts

I know, I know...1st post comes after a loss. I didn't intend for it to work out that way, but it did...so....yeah. Last night was just like the Nebraska game, great first half, clicking on defense, just enough offense to keep Wisky unbalanced a little bit, and a shared desire to "do your job". Second half is another story. Not a total 180, but just too much self doubt. I expected a down year like most did, but this is far from acceptable. I am not spitting fire and brimestone, but I firmly believe that coaching and coaching philosophies get put to the test when the roster is in a state of turnover....meaning that I believe you get to see what you have at the head when the talent is down a bit. In those types of years, execution is key. Attention to detail is key. Fundamentals are key. This current staff can not/will not make that adjustment. All things point to Crean (as they should), but since his contract is the size of Jupiter..he isnt going anywhere. Somebody has to fall on the sword at the end of this year. Anybody. I don't mind McClain, but he was supposed to be our big man/defensive coach right? I know the big man issues are more scheme than anything, but I can't say the same for the defense. Maybe hes the one thats gotta go? Kenny Johnson has done a fantastic job in our recruiting department...I guess....but aren't you seriously sick and tired of seeing him shouting out to the kids on the floor during games? Communication is a must and being an assistant coach, I know that there is going to be a steady stream from mulitple sources on the bench, but Kenny takes it to another level. Hes damn near out on the floor. He chews kids out for a blown assignment or a missed layup, sometimes at a timeout..most times while the kids are on the benches end of the floor PLAYING! While those things are good information, that is the responsibility of the head coach..not the director of recruiting. I want the kids to know where they screwed up, but I honestly feel they are being overloaded with information. Without a solid message from the top, the message is muddied and you get meltdowns/20 turnovers a game/no consistency.  Maybe Buckley has used up his influence in the state? Maybe he isn't reaching them anymore. I don't know. What I do know is that something MUST change in the offseason personnel wise. If it doesn't, it makes no difference who is staying or going player wise. Go get an IU guy to fill the open spot. Throw every dime at Fife if you want to replace our defensive coach. Go get Lewis from Butler (I bet he could be had for a steal after this year). For Gods sake...change something. Insanity is defined as doing the same things over and expecting different results. I can't go into next year with hope of improvement if this current staff is kept in the exact same capacity. I just can't. Maybe it is all on the kids, but stats don't lie....and the stats haven't gotten much better since conference play began. Please, somebody convince me I am way offbase here.

You can't just be happy with Alex Morgan?

Always with the wandering eyes, this one.

Looking is free.

Besides, according to the same theory there would be an infinite number of universes where I would've woke up next to the phenomenal Alex Morgan.  This isn't any of those   :rtfm:

Gordon and Williams combining to score 0 points in 40+ minutes = what the heck is wrong with this coaching staff that they can't figure out how to maximize a roster with so many talented parts????

I am to the point where I really doubt Kenny Johnson's competence as a coach. He might be a good recruiter and he might have ties to the DMV but what has he helped us improve upon and how has he impacted the game of our players?

Crean is either incapable or unwilling to adjust his system to fit his players.  Instead he tries to fit a square peg in a round hole, which is unacceptable because he's the one that got those square pegs knowing the hole is round.

One of the things I dislike about Crean.  A coach should be able to adjust.

I have seen all I need to see of Crean.  Like I have said on numerous occasions, he did what he was originally hired to do and that was to resurrect a proud program from the ashes.  He did that but now the challenge is to get this program back to where it can compete for Championships on an annual basis, not once every 2 or 3 years.  The weaknesses with this team are many (too many to fit in to one post) and they are glaring and they are all fixable with right person at the helm.  The offense is just putrid...very seldom are there more than 2 or three passes made before someone heaves up a rock.  I can remember the last time I saw them execute a back door and evidently setting screens is against Crean's religion.  The "this is a young team" excuse doesn't pass the muster when you are 26 games in to the season.  This team has more physical talent than 50% of the teams in the Top 25.  CTC was carried last year by an ultra talented team (that should've won IU's 6th NC) but this year, during a rebuilding year the shoe was on the other foot and unfortunately he is not capable enough to deliver.  It's so disheartening to watch this talent go to waste and then listen to him always lay the blame at the feet of the players.  Just once I'd love to hear him take some of the blame but that still wouldn't be enough to satisfy me.

Could be much worse. In one of those universes you might wake up in the middle of a Roseanne Barr/Rosie O'Donnell sandwich.

That would make for a great cage fight.
