A little tidbit.

The Indiana Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will celebrate Indiana women's basketball's greatest era on Jan. 18-19, 2014. The weekend will commemorate a historical span when the Hoosiers made an AIAW Final Four appearance (1973) and two Elite Eight appearances (1972, 1974).

Women's basketball became a varsity sport at Indiana University in the fall of 1971, and in the first four years of competing, the Hoosiers compiled a record of 62-15 (.805) under head coach Bea Gorton. These amazing accomplishments all occurred long before women's basketball received scholarship, program and facility support.

The players and staff members from those early teams have been formally invited back and will be recognized publicly during the IU men's basketball game vs. Northwestern on Jan. 18. The following day at the IU women's basketball contest against Minnesota on Jan. 19, a new banner honoring the 1973 Final Four team will be raised to the rafters of Assembly Hall during a halftime ceremony.

"Becoming a varsity sport in 1971, our women's basketball program compiled an incredible four-year record of 62-15, advanced to two Elite Eights, and reached the 1973 Final Four," Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass said. "We are thrilled to give this amazing group of women the recognition they so richly deserve."

The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) was founded in 1971 and governed women's athletics at the college level and oversaw women's national championships. It grew in membership during the 1970s as the growth of women's college sports began to rise with the enactment of Title IX. The AIAW governed women's collegiate athletics just as the NCAA had been doing for men's programs. The AIAW discontinued operation in 1982 as the NCAA began hosting women's championships.
