Looks good to me. I have not thought that much about the lineup yet in terms of who will play where. I have only thought as far as I expect Lloyd, Miller, Gorski, Fineman, Sowers and Houston to be in lineup and have huge years. I expect Milto, Stiever and Krueger to anchor the weekend rotation and Saalfrank to finally give us a reliable 4th starter for the weekdays assuming he continues to come on like he did last year at end.

Who replaces the departed players and who plays what position in the lineup is not something I've looked at extensively yet. I will say I hope we find a closer and allow Lloyd to be a full time offensive player which is where his future lies in my mind. The bullpen is the one question but hopefully its improved. I'm very confident we've got the best lineup and starting rotation in Big Ten

Why don't you like Lloyd in the closer role? You can DH for any position still with him there.

If Kaletha is solid... our lineup should be nasty. I think we will see improved offense from Fineman this season, which will be nice depth wise.

Absolutely. With the muscle and pop Fineman has in his bat he should hit around 10 HR's and .275 if he is living up to his potential.

I just think at this level a player should focus on what he is best at. For Lloyd that's hitting which is where his future lies. There is no doubt he was a solid closer and best bullpen guy last year but I just feel at this level a team needs to have everyone be either a hitter or a pitcher. Maybe I am old fashioned since the coaches I learned from were but I strongly believe we need to find a closer who focuses exclusively on closing.

Ok, that makes sense. Do you know much about any of the incoming FR? Krueger, Houston, and Gorski were huge for us last year.. can 1 or 2 make that impact this year?

Have not really taken much of a look yet at the freshman.

I expect all of the 3 you mentioned to have good years. Gorski as more of a high in the lineup guy who gets on base and hits for avg. more than power. Houston I expect to be a really nice role player in middle of order. Krueger I expect to be the no. 2 or 3 weekend starter with a smilar sub 3 ERA like last year. Really the 3 weekend starters are interchangeable.

Agree about starters.. Houston will either leadoff or bat in the 9hole though. Imo

Similar to what I am thinking.. I don't see Eustace as the DH though.. although he does have a lot of experience.

Had no idea we had a JUCO transfer Cade Bunnell that's a middle infielder. Someone thought he would play 2nd base and Lloyd would DH.

As a FR at Kansas St he batted a .227 on 77 at bats. Started 8 of the final 13 games for them and 16 of 43 overall.

.227 won't cut it. Gotta do better.

As a FR with only 77 at bats.. nothing wrong with it.

Saw on a website he batted a .291 8hrs and 37rbis this past season in JUCO. Very solid numbers. 40 games.. 155 plate appearances, .413 OBP.

Crazy how much different college is than the big leagues. Comparatively.. if Bunnell played 120 games (ball park number for what a pro starter plays)..  he would have got 24HRs and drove in 111rbis... I realize there are other factors, but this kid had really good numbers in 40 games.

Did something happen to Cal Krueger injury wise or is he possibly moving to the bullpen (maybe as the closer?). Mike Miller's article previewing the season mentions Stiever, Milto, Saalfrank, Herrin and Beachump in the mix for starts with no mention at all of Krueger. This is the first I have heard of this unless Mike just had an oversight when writing the article.

@IUBASE17: 2018 Hoosier Baseball has ‘officially’ started. #IUBASE http://iubase.com/day-one-of-spring-training/

Today was the first day of official practice for Division 1 College Baseball. Luckily , The Team of the North enjoyed 58 degrees and sunny weather in Bloomington. That kind of weather meant Hoosier Baseball was able to scrimmage outside at The Bart.

As expected on the first day , there was some good, some bad, and a look at some new faces to the team.

As far as the new comers go , RHP Connor Manous (#27) showed a nasty curve and got out of jam leaving runners on, 1B Elijah Dunham (#21) got a big RBI hit for the Red Team and OF Logan Kaletha(#11) had a few big hits and showed off his wheels.

Second base has been a question because of Tony Butler’s departure . Today Cade Bunnell (#4) was playing 2B for one team and Matt Lloyd manned 2B for the other.

First base has also been a question. Today Scotty Bradley played for one team and Elijah Dunham for the other.

Ryan Fineman did Ryan Fineman things. A big homerun off Saalfrank that bounced off of the scoreboard and he backpicked a runner of off first base that had to big of a lead.

On the other side , there was some questionable base running , some errors and some strikeouts with RISP.

Just getting a chance to practice outside  at The Bart on January 26th has to be considered a victory for The Team of the North today.

I would assume the coaching staff prefers if Bunnell wins the 2B position.. then Lloyd can DH and still be the closer. Dunham vs. Bradley for the 1B it appears.

Eustace used to pinch run. (Not sure who the 4th OF would be).

Gosh I'm excited!
