(2018) QB Michael Penix to IU
LamarCheeks replied to Yogi's Picnic Basket's topic in Indiana Football Recruiting Forum
I dug up this old thread because -- well, why not. Apparently, CTA says Penix won't be ready by spring but will be ready to go come next season (whatever that season will look like). This is part of the reason why I was disappointed to see the original Bucket Game canceled, then it's reincarnation and/or a potential game against Iowa axed as well. I wanted to see Tuttle with this offense for at least three more games (now, we'll get just one). I'm guessing there will have to be a QB "controversy" next summer. I don't think you necessarily hand the keys back to Penix, especially given that he hasn't been able to get through a full season yet. If there are spring workouts, it would seem Tuttle would have an advantage -- but I guess we'll just have to see what the summer holds ... -

Looks as if Auburn has its man. This seems to come out of left field. Or Idaho ...

Strong disagree right back at you. I just don't see beating a 4-5 team as being HUGE for the program. Even though it's a bowl, college football fans aren't stupid. They know what it is -- it's playing a Rutgers or an Illinois instead of playing a Penn State or a Michigan or an Ohio State. The only way we gain any cachet from this game is if we win pretty big -- by four or five touchdowns. Something like 42-14. Even then ... it's still a 4-5 team. I just don't see there being a whole lot to gain from this -- we won't get much bang for our buck. If we win, we won't be seen as Outback Bowl champs; we'll be seen as someone who beat a 4-5 team (unless, as mentioned -- it's a massive rout). And if we lose -- well, let's just hope that doesn't happen.
-
What really bugs me about this game -- and there are several things -- is that we're in a no-win situation. If we win -- well, we're playing a 4-5 team that's what we are supposed to do. If we lose, it could be seen as justification for knocking us all the way back to the Outback in the first place.

Fred Glass goes off on the CFB disrespect of IUFB
LamarCheeks replied to iubb's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
We all want to believe that CTA will be able to sustain this and we'll be in this position again soon. But there are no guarantees. This is an historic season, one like we haven't had in years -- if ever. To me, that's why getting bumped all the way to the Outback against a 4-5 team feels almost criminal. And the fact that the Big 1.0 hung us out to dry is especially galling and reprehensible. I'm thrilled that Fred spoke out. And I hope others will as well. The message needs to get out there that this is unacceptable and we won't stand for this ****. I cannot tell you how much I was looking forward to playing in the Fiesta Bowl. The Outback is such a friggin' insult considering what we accomplished this season. -
I want Dolson to throw down with Barta the next time all the ADs are together!!!

This is what has been infuriating to me. They say O$U has a good win against a ranked team (us), but say we lost our only game against a good team. Other than their game against NW, they essentially beat the same teams we did. You can't have it both ways.. . Our best season in 30 years -- maybe our best ever -- and we got royally screwed.
-
I actually feel the same way. With the season we had, the Citrus Bowl is a total letdown. The only reason I would want to play is I really want to see another game with Tuttle at QB.
-
FWIW, I've seen three different projections -- I think they were ESPN, CBS Sports and 247 Sports -- all had us in the Citrus against Auburn.

I've seen a couple people trash Reed on this site -- kinda disappointing to me. He was one tough kid, and while he was in B-town, gave everything he had. I still don't quite understand what turned Knight against him. My guess is that at one point or another, RMK tells pretty much all players they need to transfer. They're supposed to beg to be able to stay, and RMK then decides to keep them on. It's part of the game away from the game one needed to play while RMK was here. But after 3 years of all you have to endure to play for him, Neil probably decided he'd had enough -- and so he called the bluff and said: OK, it is time to get out of here. And obviously, that didn't sit well with RMK. -
Yes, I know about Oregon -- but IMO, that's equally as criminal as Iowa State. Oregon didn't even earn a spot in the Pac-12 title game.
-
Every bowl projection I've seen has us getting screwed out of a New Year's Six bowl. All have three-loss Iowa State and Florida ahead of us -- as well as Oregon, who is 4-2. Man, what a racket!

Judging from my avatar, it should be obvious: Calbert. He was in school when I was there -- and I cannot imagine anybody who donned the candy stripes was smoother. As Dickie V. might say: He could flat-out score. And he more or less was a hidden gem. He wasn't all that highly recruited (a broken foot during his senior season contributed), yet became the BIG's all-time leading scorer. -
2020-2021 IUBB Schedule

Well, Butler did play at Villanova tonight (lost by 19), so I would think we'd be on for Saturday. Of course, in this wacky world of COVID-19, a LOT can happen in three days. -
Had four first-team defensive players via media -- one from the coaches. It was almost the same as the offense. Weird, but it almost seems as if the coaches and administrators are purposely trying to dis us. I think most consider us to be the second-best team in the league -- and this is our best defense in years, if not ever -- yet no love from the higher ups. The administrators walked back on their rule of a five-game minimum to benefit O$U and the Iowa AD is the CFP committee chair -- and he's backing the the Big 12 and the SEC than his own damn conference.

Tara went to Indiana. She played for the women in the 1970s -- well before it was an NCAA program -- and used to watch the men's team practice. She has said that watching Bob Knight helped shape the coach she would be become. I had the pleasure to chat w/her for a few minutes years ago. Very classy lady ... -
Guess the B1G coaches are kowtowing to O$U as well -- six players on the first-team offense. Bell and Fryfogle are second-team receivers? Man, the coaches really love them some Buckeye$, don't they? The media likes Ty, however. And Bell.

The fact that Georgia creaned someone to make room for Mohammed got me to hearken back to 2012, when "The Movement" was on the way. I wasn't on this board then, but remember seeing on another chat (maybe the comments in IndyStar or some chat on FB) that there was a secret plan in place if we had remain oversigned -- had Ron Patterson not mysteriously been deemed academically unqualified at the last minute. Anybody remember that? Anybody know of such a plan? I recall seeing speculation that maybe since Yogi's parents could afford it, he might pay his own way for a year -- and officially be declared a "walk-on" until the following year, when a scholly would open.
-
The fact that he wants to enroll next semester and the fact that Georgia creaned someone in the past couple weeks has me thinking this isn't gonna go our way. It happens every now and then, and during COVID-19, it's pretty much chaos -- but how often do you see a guy say he's leaving the program right after the start of the basketball season? Crean needed to create space -- and that's what he did.
