I've watched him coach a couple of times and I just think there were better coaches than him in the MVC. I'm not saying he won't succeed but we won't tolerate the same results we have been getting. Just my opinion. Like I said, I'll gladly eat crow.

I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong but we'll back here again in a few years doing a job search if it's DeVries.
-
If it's DeVries then the IUBB job isn't as coveted as we think it is. This guy has zero championship experience. Zero. That should be a criteria for this hire.
-
McCollum has an overall better resume in my opinion. Both can be good but someone is always better.
-
Drake's roster was empty when McCollum took over.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for?

IUFB has three of the five on schedule. https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/who-are-the-big-tens-college-football-playoff-contenders-in-2025-surprise-team-joins-list-of-usual-suspects/

The staff spoke to IHSAA football coaches last week.

I get it. Spending money to see IUFB get curb stomped isn't fun. Those days are pretty much over with this coach. Coaching matters. He ain't losing. He just doesn't do that. He's been able to keep his staff as well. 8 wins should be the expectation with this coach. Coaching matters. I don't want to hijack this thread y'all. If you want to talk ball head over to the football section! Hopefully Dolson hires a coach with championship experience.

The most historic hire for the program and credit goes to Dolson and Whitten. That hire told all of us that IU was finally going to get serious with the football program. I'm telling myself it will go down as the hire that changed the fanbase to football first fans. I know that's pipe dream but I've been dreaming for that since the 80s. But more CFP appearances, Heisman candidates, First team All-Americans, first and second round NFL picks, conference championships, etc. etc. will definitely help. I'm kind of shocked I'm not seeing more traffic in the football section here. We're like in the middle of spring ball. And the team, on paper, is even better than last year's CFP team. Exciting times for IUFB 812FB folks!!!

Just for clarity, I pimped Coach Cig pretty early on during the discussions in the thread. He was a pipe dream at that point, because you know, the misery of being an IUFB faithful was a strong and deep darkness that warshed over us. Darker n' a black steer's tookus on a moonless prairie night. There was no bottom. For me with that hire, it was about finding an established coach that had program building success and would leave the program in good shape for the next hire. Someone that had experience of taking a losing program and turning it around quickly. Not in my wildest dreams did I ever think IUFB would be playing in the CFP on year one, or ever for that matter. But man, I've completely changed on that kind of thinking. Us IUFB faithful should always be thinking CFP Natty. Always.

If he's got family in the 812 then yes, he probably would want the job.

For me it's about hiring a coach with championship experience. I personally think that should be a requirement for this hire. If IU can't land established D1 coaches with championship experience McCollum is my next choice. The more I learned about him the more I was sold on him. He's a unicorn in my opinion. I believe he'll be able to handle any job he takes. I just hope if he's coaching in the Big Ten it's in Bloomington because any other place we'll end up hating the guy.

Thanks for sharing. Appreciate it. I made the correction. -
He's going to end up at Iowa and we're going to hate this guy.

THIS^^^ On paper things are looking great. They've also added depth in the places that needed to be added. It's refreshing to actually have a staff that knows what they're doing and an administration actually supporting the program. Cloud nine, man. Cloud nine. I have a very close friend that was like this. Once the hire happened I told him that IU is going to make some noise. At one point I was telling him we might see 10 wins because everything I was seeing (interviews, spring ball, etc.) was all the right things you see with winners. I told him everyone will know about Kurtis Rourke and his name will be discussed for Heisman. He told me I had delusions of grandeur. He changed his tune when IUFB curb stomped the Bruins in the Rose Bowl. I was at the Rose Bowl and got a text from him after the Amare Ferrell pick that simply said, "I'm a believer, they're for real." Coaching matters. "Change the way people think." -Coach Cig

That'd be Alford, Thomas, Buckner, Yogi, etc, in a McCollum system.

I wouldn't pigeonhole his "system" into a label of a D2 style system. His approach seems to be more about his players' strengths and adapt to them. He's definitely a process driven coach, like Nick Saban for sure. It looks like his biggest constant is the point guard play. It all starts and stops with the PG. I think I read on here somewhere or maybe watched an interview or something where he wants a player that can quickly process things mentally. His offense makes me think of the "motion" offense back in the day. It's very fluid and not really about X's and O's but more about mentally processing what is available on the court that the defense is giving you. A lot of cuts to the basket, screens that help setting up open shots through mismatches, screens to get two defenders on the ball, ghost screens, etc.. I watched it in the flesh, and it's really fun to watch. Personally, I enjoyed his team's defense more than I did the offense. Bottom line, they played smart. I haven't seen an IUBB team play smart in a very long time. I do question whether or not his type of philosophy/offense will work against length. We'll be able to watch this in the tournament for sure. If McCollum is the guy, I'll be extremely comfortable with the hire.

I know it's hard for folks to grasp because we've been so used to the disappointment of the football program but IUFB finally has a coach that knows what he's doing. What a horrible take. Lol.
