  1. Congrats to McGinnis --another Indiana legend! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  2. I agree. We need some toughness administered to our players. Just a dab of what Knight used to do would be enough. When I was a student in the Knight days the most sought after tickets were those right behind the Indiana bench. Knight was amazing and fun to watch and listen to. That man could draw up incredible plays or defensive maneuvers and he could get more expletives in a sentence than anyone else I have ever seen in my life. You definitely did not want to be the player who missed a defensive assignment coming into a time out. And the referees definitely earned their pay for when he was mad they heard about it EVERY time they ran by him down the court. It was highly educational and entertaining. Other coaches and players sometimes feared him but always respected him. You knew you were going to be in a war if you were going to try and come in and get a win in The Hall. We need that mentality again. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  3. Here's a great article on Ostrom--once known in AAU circles as the Minnesota Doughboy for his time with Clem Haskins staff in Minnesota--loved the Khalid Al Amin and Joakim Noah recruiting stories. Sounds like a relentless recruiter with great AAU connections. Billy Donavan thought so highly of him he sent him a championship ring because his recruits helped Florida win it all. https://www.si.com/college-basketball/2014/03/27/tommy-ostrom-dayton-south-regional Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  4. Knight did a lot of great things for charity and the library and was great to us students. When I was at IU he had a "Night with Knight" event each year where he would take questions about the team or upcoming season from students and answer them. Of course, if he thought they were stupid questions he would tell you to sit down and shut up. It was classic Knight and so much fun. He did a lot of good things behind the scenes and ran a tight ship--strong discipline and no cheating. I am going to say something that may not be popular in today's politically correct world. Personally --I think Knight has a right to be bitter but he should have taken it out on the university and not on his former players and us fans who loyally supported him through the years. I say that because although I did not always agree with what he said or what he did--I don't think he got fired over the Neil Reed incident. I think he got fired because he wasn't winning as much as he once had. Knight didn't change the way he had always coached and IU was fine with it as long as we were in the top 10, winning conference titles, and competing for national titles. He was their golden boy bringing millions to the university. When that stopped happening in his latter years, conduct they once turned a blind eye to became a fireable offense. Those of us close to the players or program in those days know Reed and his family were trouble. Let me just say this--Reed's dad was a high school coach and Knight was gentle compared to him. I don't say all this to make excuses--but the university changed the rules on Knight mid-game and demanded he change the way he coached but still wanted him to win at a high rate. I am not saying the university was wrong in wanting Knight to change his methods and coaching style--I am just saying they were fine with it when we were winning big. That's the hypocrisy Knight can't get over. So--yes--many of us who lived through the firing and would have run through a brick wall for Coach think he got shafted in some ways. The world changed and Knight would not and maybe even could not. But let me say this--Knight was not all bad. He had pride in the program and instilled it in us students and I want Archie to bring back that same sense of pride to IU once again! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  5. Knight is something. He shouldn't be so quick to leave IU off his resume---without IU he doesn't have all those wins--the perfect season--the national titles--the red sweater--the coach of the year awards---the chair throw, and he is not a legend, etc. Of course, he does things like omit IU just to get a rise out of the university and our fan base. But-- deep down he knows better. Just as much as Knight helped make IU basketball---IU basketball helped make Knight. That is why he is always in Indiana for paid speeches and book signings. I loved Knight as a coach and he is one of the best ever--but he knows where his bread got buttered. Without IU he may have ended up as a bitter Walmart greeter and if he keeps it up he still might! Lol. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  6. And to think even though IU has 5 basketball national titles--that is behind at least 2 other IU programs. IU Soccer has 8 national titles and I think IU swimming/diving has 10 titles. Impressive to say the least! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  7. Well so much for that.... Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  8. Have to admit Flint and Groce would be solid hires. Flint would have a great connection with those tough Philly kids and he had a winning record as a D1 coach for UMass and Drexel. Groce has always been known as a solid recruiter and has led a Big Ten program. They would be 2 solid hires. Add an Indiana guy to the staff and we are off to the races!
  9. It is part of IU myth and legend. So--where is the missing fish from the fountain Hoosier Nation? Let's put the BTown Banners investigations division on it. Old Fart and River Pilot--you've got some splainin' to do! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  10. True. We won't know how to act if Archie doesn't talk deflections after EVERY game! Lol. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  11. Are any of these hamburger boys showing or talking any IU interest at all? I loved Cody Zeller's tweet challenging Archie to land one of them and saying "you got this"! We may still be a year away for this level of recruiting but with the big senior class after next season--Archie will get his shot at them! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  12. Well said Stuhoo. I would throw in Damon Bailey too as he might want to get a little further south now that his son is playing high school ball in Bedford. That would further strengthen Indiana high school recruiting with perhaps the biggest high school legend of all time on the staff. Besides--I want to get him away from the Butler program! 13. Several days have now passed since the announcement and I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised by all the positive press coverage of Archie. I thought there would be more "IU had to settle" articles but it turns out Archie is even better liked and respected by coaches and basketball talking heads than I thought. Heck--even Knight had a positive comment which is difficult for him when it comes to anything IU. Looks like we got a good ball coach---now comes the harder part--winning consistently and winning big. I believe we will.... Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  14. But--we lost repeatedly by just a FEW points. Wouldn't take much to turn it around. I am optimistic... Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  15. I know I shouldn't care at this point what Knight thinks --but part of me still does. Knight was the Coach I grew up with and while I did not agree with everything he did or said ---I would have ran through a brick wall for him as a student. Glad he approves of Archie and I still hold out a faint hope of an IU/Knight reunion someday. Maybe Archie can get that done. As I posted on here a few years back--we'll Motel 6 Knight for now---meaning we will leave the light on for him but he will actually have to come knock on the door if he wants to return. 16. Great article --Titus hit the nail on the head on this one. We are just a fan base that wants to win big again . We have the resources and maybe--just maybe--we finally do have the right Coach to get it done. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  17. Like you passion. Keep predicting brother! As they say--go big or go home! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  18. I have been on campus the last couple of days with my daughter for freshman orientation--yes--another generation of RebelHoosiers on the way--and during the campus tour the guide stopped at Showalter Fountain and talked about the 87 championship and the missing fish. Those things were heavy--one ended up in a frat house--one ended up on top of Ballantine Hall--one ended up in the President's yard --and one was never found at all and has been replaced by a smaller fish. The legend is that Knight has the missing fish and will return it when IU apologizes for firing him and IU will not win another championship until the fish is returned to its rightful place. Anyway--the guide was talking about this and my daughter was laughing because I had already told her the story many times and because the guide made it sound like it was ancient history. My wife and I chuckled during the tour because we were both there in 87 together as we fell in love at IU and the rest is history. My wife and I were talking about it a few minutes ago as we can't believe it's already been 30 years. It's time for another championship! We are past due Hoosier Nation! Archie must break the Knight curse and the fish of the fountain curse! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  19. Great memory and a great post--made me tear up--reminded me of a similar memory with my dad--he was on his death bed in the hospital from cancer and we had been watching IU basketball together. He fell asleep during the game and even though he could hardly breathe and was in tremendous pain--a few hour later he raised up in bed and yelled out "Did we win"? Yes--I told him and he smiled and went back to sleep. God --he was a true IU fan and I miss him so much! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  20. Last I saw the fish--Old Fart and River Pilot were fighting over it! Lol Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  21. I was on campus in 87 when Knight turned the tables and ran with the UNLV Runnin' Rebels in the National Semi-final and we beat them at their own game. Alford was unconscious from everywhere on the court. And what a night on campus for the championship with Syracuse when Smart's shot went through the net there was a roar all over campus and Bloomington. And we rushed to Showalter fountain and took part in the biggest IU party ever! And regardless of what you have heard --I was in the fountain --but the Rebel does NOT have the missing fish from the fountain! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  22. Matt Carlino AND HIS DAD would be correct! Cue Beach Boys song in the background: "Round., round, get around--I get around"! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  23. I totally agree. There have to be some alumni now secretly plotting Alford's demise. It was yet another disappointing season in Westwood with all the talent they have on that team. P.S. If they get rid of him can we have TJ Leaf? They can have all the rest....I still wish that kid would have picked the Hoosiers. Baller with Indiana roots. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  24. Off topic a little bit but speaking of Fischer--when I saw him in the tourney I couldn't help but notice all of the ink on him. My first thought was there must be a tattoo shop close to their basketball practice facility! Dude was looking ROUGH! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  25. So proud of Yogi. We were critical of him at times on here in the past but this last season made us all realize how valuable he was to the team. A hard worker and a leader--glad to see him tearing it up in the NBA. And I will say it --I miss him as a Hoosier! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
