PG play has been pathetic. Stupid turnovers, not getting the offense in motion, and zero bball IQ. -
Would Archie Leave For Another School?
Magnanimous replied to IUrocker's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
By the time he would have gotten IU to the level you're talking about in this scenario, I think both UNC and Duke would have already found their coaching replacements anyway. UCLA may likely be open in the next few years if Alford doesn't improve his March record, but other than the prospect of living in LA that may not even be a top 10 job anymore. I'm not remotely worried about Louisville at this point for the foreseeable future given the circus down there. Kentucky is Kentucky, but who knows when Cal is going to hang it up at this point. IU can outbid Kansas with Big 10 money and the new Fox deal, and within the next 5-10 years conference realignment may leave Kansas out to dry. Too much unpredictability surrounding these programs and the greater college basketball landscape to even rationally think about this. On top of all this, the one and done rule is likely on its way out as a result of the Adidas scandal. Adam Silver even said as much following it. So there will likely be more parity returning to college basketball in the future, and what separates a top job from a second tier gig will shrink. Bottom line, there isn't anything Archie can find elsewhere he doesn't already have at IU. If he's as successful as we hope he will be, the checkbook will open and he won't leave unless for a very personal reason outside of IU's control. He'll have full systems go at that point, so it wouldn't make much sense to start over somewhere he doesn't have the job security or recruiting ties. -

Have to wonder how much the Nassar story is hanging over the school, and to what degree it could impact fan morale in regards to the environment we're playing in. -
IU vs Northwestern 1/14/18 Game Thread

Fantastic defensive effort tonight. We're going into a tougher stretch of the schedule, but hopefully tonight will give them some confidence going into the meat of the conference slate. Tied for 3rd in the conference right now, so congrats to Coach Miller as well. -
Allen was the correct choice
Magnanimous replied to Magnanimous's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Arguably Wilson's biggest failure was his inability to attract quality QBs given his pedigree at Oklahoma. He never developed the quarterback factory we were expecting when he was hired. He couldn't hold onto Kiel or Stevens, he lucked into Sudfeld after AZ hired Rodriguez, and he never had a reliable backup or replacement to Sudfeld in any of the years following Roberson's transfer. Zander Diamont should never be the number two option on a Kevin Wilson roster, yet that's where we were at for several years. Allen had to work with what he had, especially since he didn't do any offensive recruiting until last December. Being left with Lagow and a freshman Ramsey didn't help him much, but he's already bringing in QBs as good as we've ever recruited and it's only his first recruiting class. -
Tough break for Davis. Hope he comes back strong next year. Now it's time for Justin Smith to step up like he did in Minnesota, and for Archie to make the necessary adjustments for the rest of the season.

The thing I really l like about Archie is that he keeps in players who are playing well and benches those who are not contributing. Crean would often bench players when they were scoring to put in non-contributors and it would drive me insane. -

These next two games are big. We have Penn State and Northwestern, both at home. We win those and we're suddenly sitting at 4-2 in the conference. The rest of the conference slate should be hit or miss, but win these next two and tighten up our lineup with Smith getting heavier minutes, and we may just finish this season on a positive note. Could you imagine if we got nine conference wins this season? Crean didn't win his ninth conference game until his fourth year... -

Well then he's a sh*thead. Miller would be at Ohio State this season if we didn't hire him. -

That's jumping the gun. He's going to be here for at least four years if everything goes wrong. I've watched our games this year in a number of different environments. I was at the Seton Hall game, have watched games in bars on Kirkwood, and went to a few at AH as well. The common denominator amongst fans when the team stinks, these are Crean's players who can't play smart basketball. This fan base is fully aware of what Archie is dealing with and where the majority of the blame lies. I know we consider this board to be a special community, and it's great for talking IU sports with fans of different generations from all over, and we get a lot of great stuff here regarding the the finer aspects of the program, but in regards to the product itself, this isn't some special "in the know" community who sees the team for what it is while the rest of IU fans are fairweather oafs blaming Archie. In fact, when this team has executed, all I've been hearing is praise for fundamental basketball finally returning to Bloomington. "Where has that been the last 20 years?" has been spoken multiple times in front of me at these various venues. His 2018 class is about set and looks very promising. We can declare it "turning ugly" when recruiting dries up, as it did for Crean. And no, I'm not referring to one and done players going elsewhere, but the consistent trend of top 100 recruits we're competing for not choosing us. That's where we're going to be able to gauge whether or not players are viewing the program as a viable long-term investment on par with the other top schools in the country. -

I disagree. We did see improvement. The team looked much better in the half court in early December than when they started the season, and we could see them actually running a system that didn't resemble anything like Crean's. The team is regressing from the small gains they were demonstrating on a weekly basis. This isn't the same team that played Iowa and Duke. Something is off with them because they're not settling into their offense the way they were three weeks ago, they aren't playing together, and the effort is gone from a good chunk of the team. -

Let's not forget this team went 18-16 last year and lost their three best players while bringing in no one of substance. I was cautiously optimistic this year, but my gut was telling me 15 wins was our ceiling for this season. -

I think 3 years to look formidable, 4 to being capable of near consistently deep tourney runs (assuming he builds the program back up). Next year will be mostly freshmen running the show, plus Morgan and Davis if he turns things around. It reminds me of the 09-10 season when people thought the cavalry was coming and going to just right the ship. They're still going to be young and learning a new system. Once this incoming class are sophomores and we sprinkle in some wings from the 19 class, then we should get rolling. When this incoming class are juniors we should have enough talent, depth, and experience to really make some noise. Until then we'll just have to wait it out and hope we find players who can make something happen on a given night. The most important thing is improvement. Archie can't afford to have a season like Creans third year. -

There isn't a single coach in the country who could win much with these guys. I'd hope most fans realize that. -

A transition like this always gets worse before it gets better. This is the medicine IU basketball has to swallow if it is going to get back to the level the fans expect it to be. Archie isn't bringing in anyone that resembles the players on this roster. -

The recruits for the most part are buying into what Archie is pitching as his vision for the program. He's got a different side to him that he keeps in-house, and it's an honest, no nonsense persona. The guy has zero pieces in place for what he's trying to run. My only issue with him so far is not adapting his approach to the team he has. This isn't the roster to play a packline defense. When you try to fit a square peg into a round hole this is what you get. It's like trying to run Navy's triple option with Nate Sudfeld. It'll look worse than letting bad players fail at the system they're best suited for. I have a feeling that something is going to fundamentally change in another two or three weeks with this team because he's not going to put up with this absent minded brand of basketball much longer. If we have more games like tonight, which we will, there's no point in keeping this roster intact the way it is now knowing at least half this group has no future with this program. Tighten the roster, go seven deep, and see who responds. We have three guys on this team who give a damn about showing up each night. Archie is no stranger to a short roster playing small ball. It worked for him quite a bit in 2014. -

It's been said to death every game this season, but I just can't imagine what this team would look like if Crean was still the coach. No size, no depth, no shooters, no effort, no senior leadership, and no personal accountability. I'd like to see more from Archie getting on them and adapting his scheme to what he has to work with, but I think some guys can already see the writing on the wall as to their future with this team. From what I can tell so far, I think Archie actually dislikes most of this team. -
The legendary broadcaster, who earned his masters and PhD at IU , passed away Thursday night. Enberg got his start as the play-by-play announcer for IU football and basketball, and also announced the first radio broadcast of the Little 500. He was 82 years old.

Archie deserves criticism for this one. He didn't have the team prepared, they never got in a rythem in the half court offense, and didn't emphasize attacking the basket when Fort Wayne got in foul trouble. Having said that, this packline defense is going to look worse before it looks better when there is a dearth of size and athleticism. That's where we're at now, and the result is getting killed on weak side threes. This season is what it is, and I'm not sold on next year being that great either given what his vision for the program is, but I've seen flashes of what he's trying to implement and it will come around if the fans are patient enough. -
(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS
Magnanimous replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We're the same team in 2019-20 whether he comes or not. Will be nice to get some momentum for the program through a commitment from him, but people shouldn't get too worked up about his decision. Two-year 5* players like Zeller, Bryant, and Gary Harris who are fringe first rounders out of hs are more valuable. -
I think this program will be set once Archie gets his guys in and they get a year or two under their belts in his system. You can see what he's trying to run and then imagine most of the guys on the court being taller, and sprinkle in some shooters. It sucks to have to wait but Archie's tenure should be an annual rise in production, not what we saw with Crean with blips of solid basketball and then huge dropoffs. Assuming ISU shoots well like they did against us, Crean likely loses that game. The Duke and Louisville games are routes and we're probably looking at another out of nowhere Christmas break loss. Crean's team let up 1.53 points per possession two years ago against Duke, which is about the equivalent of a layup drill. Bottom line, Crean assembled this hollow roster of role players and no one would even be watching this season if he was still here. He never used the post, so take Davis' contributions out of the equation, and now imagine Johnson, Newkirk, Green, Jones, and the rest of our guys jacking up 25+ three pointers a night on top of 17 turnovers a game. Archie has done a great job so far with what he's been given, and even if it'll take a year or two, it's fun to watch Hoosier basketball again.
