(2019) SF Trendon Watford to LSU
cthomas replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Would not want to be a college coach trying to put together a team and have to cater to these kids. I understand it's a big decision but it shouldn't take into the spring to know where a kid wants to go under normal circumstances. This is especially true for kids who want to be a one or two year college rental with no real interest in a degree. -
Seems sometimes like the forgotten player in the class. He has all the tools and I hope he can thrive in CAM's system.
-
Yeah, I'd say that qualifies as a "pretty good" career. He certainly deserves to be mentioned with the IU all-time greats. Happy to say I had the privilege to see him play, although back then, I heard more games on the radio than I saw on tv.

Walt was a monster, and had a pretty good NBA career if I recall correctly.

I'm 70, and that sounds like something my dad would have said to me.

(2019) SG Brandon Newman to Purdue

While that's entirely possible, I doubt that CAM would want to give the impression that he is steering kids away from the local high school. And I'm not saying you suggested that, but I think IU being involved in any way with a kid going to a prep school would be a bad look with high school coaches. -

Agreed, because when they actually think about what that means in terms of sharing the spotlight, then the package loses its luster. Highly ranked kids want to be the focal point where they go which allows them to showcase their talents for the next level. I'm sure Langford saw the glaring hole IU had at his position and knew he would be "the man". While we want to think it's about IU, it's more likely about opportunity. Such is the nature of the game these days. -

Someone we really want is going to take the plunge and that will impact everything that follows. It will become a numbers and position of need game pretty fast and some of the guys we are recruiting will be left out because they are "just enjoying the process". -
Probably a whole lot of people having good fun at his expense at the Detroit HQ.....behind his back of course. I think I read somewhere that he makes 7.7 mil a year, but I'm sure his ego took a hit.

Doesn't get any more embarrassing than that!

(2019) SF Keion Brooks Jr. to Kentucky

While I prefer instate talent when we can get it, I also understand that not all instate talent is equal. Fit is more important than location. The players already on the roster will impact whether or not a kid wants to play at IU. Like it or not, and I mostly don't, it's a national game now and the state school isn't always the most appealing. I love that CAM is committed to looking close to home first, but "locking down the state" is an unrealistic fantasy. -
You're right about that and honestly I didn't even think about what I just said. I've spent the day listening to the "500" and it's like trying to beat Penske at Indianapolis. No matter how good you are, you're competing for what's left.
-
The question for me is can we get enough quality talent and depth to compete with the top of the division or are we always going to be stuck in the 5 to 7 win area year after year. I have never understood why IU can't consistently be as good or better than the Iowa and Northwesterns. Outside of Michigan, Ohio State, and maybe Penn State we should be right there most years.

I get a very uncomfortable feeling every time I hear that phrase. -

Are the "open gyms" video taped for later review. It's hard to believe that the coaches don't get some kind of feedback about how those go. In other words, there are ways to be in the gym without "being in the gym". -

Bob Kravitz has an article up that repeats the Post's story with an added shot at CAM. He called Adidas Archie's best recruiter and praised Coach Crean for not playing the game to get top recruits. If what is going on is legal and breaks no rules, then I think it's a little unfair to call it dirty. -
Juwan Morgan RETURNING For Senior Season

Saw a news story on tv about a week ago about a hepatitis A outbreak in Kentucky. They recommended anyone going to the Derby get vaccinated before going.....so there's that. -
Obviously CAM saw some value in EF or he wouldn't be here. I am willing to wait and see what role coach Miller utilizes him for before judging his worth.

I'm good with whoever CAM decides fits best. On a side note, I really liked that Tim Langford said that as soon as the FBI and Kansas were linked, they were out. I would hope that parents feel the same way about the nonsense going on at MSU. If a kid is willing to jump into that cesspool knowing what we know now, I'm not sure we want him. -

I think we are selling the freshmen short. I think even Forrester would have played some on last year's team. It worries me that Green will always be what we have seen to this point. If so, I'd rather roll with RP and let him grow. I believe it will be his team eventually anyway. Morgan and Langford are the only certain starters and that's assuming Morgan comes back. Every other spot is "to be determined". Who plays will probably be determined by who picks up the defense the quickest. I can easily see it taking a significant amount of time to sort this team out. -

It just seems likely, given the number of quality players, that someone looks for greener pastures after next season. Kids want to play and not everyone is going to. I think there will be at least four spots available. -

The difference for me is that CAM's offers are all to kids who can actually play at this level. -
Could we kick them out of the B1G?

Agreed. My only concern is how quickly the young guys pick up CAM's defense.
