Green seems at HIS best when he has a lot of freedom on what shots to take. I am not sure though if giving him a regular green light is best for US. I think this is a very strong strategy but for a lot of us wanting an NCAA tournament berth or bust next year, this is more of a long strategy. One we should definitely utilize to build a strong core with strong depth. These are 2 very good pickups (if they happen) and gets the momentum moving again (if it had stalled). This might not be as exciting as Brooks, Romeo and TJD but this might be a better group of kids for Archie to use, along with last years kids, to build his team. It would be nice if Archie could build a program that is regularly in the hunt for the BT. If he can do that I would hope somewhere down the line we add an assistant or 2 that played here and is passionate about coaching at this level. We did this under Sampson I think. It is a definitely a grey area and I don’t know all the details but if remembering correctly the yet to be announced coach can tell recruits he will be on staff and can have contact with kids while others cannot. So the next few weeks while kids have finished summer play and have a break from tons of coaches contacting them, a guy like say Calbert (just to throw a name out there) can go over to the Landers house and talk up IU. Remember the advantages of not naming an assistant coach during the next few weeks. Aug 1-3 is a quiet period Aug 4-11 is a dead period. These times restrict coaches and schools from contacting recruits. But coaches announced after the 11th might still be able to contact kids during these limited access periods. I don’t get too caught up in who to recruit. The coaches watch a ton a tape, see even more kids actually playing and have insights into who they are as people. For me, I would like to see the staff target kids who they feel can contribute and who they can coach. Then, with a pretty high hit rate, I expect to land these guys. Archie seemed on that path when he landed the 2018 class. He seemed on that path early for the 2019 class but we have had a lot more misses than hits since then. As misses mount, it is hard not to question how kids view the program. Leal, Galloway and Cross seem like kids the staff want to land. I would be glad if we landed them and I would start to feel better about our recruiting momentum. Long term I would hope we have some blend of multi year player and the high end 5*, but if Archie can win with something different that is fine. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I think a class like our freshman class becomes underwhelming when it is compared to what it could have been. Had the staff indicated they only planned to bring in 2, recruited these 2 as primary targets and then landed them, it is one thing. It is another thing when he chased after several other candidates and seemed to miss out on them (at least partially) because of our mid year slide. Given that most people think we need to make the tournament next year, even after losing our top 2 players, bringing in guys that could take time to develop can lead to some apprehension I think Archie wins more long term with 4 star guys but he finds himself in a win now environment. So it seems most of us share common ground when it comes to expectations/results for next year. Seems everyone is expecting us to be in the tournament and many expect us to be a top quartile team in the BT. Aug 1 - Sep 8 there is a quiet period for NCAA hoops. I am not sure all the rules but I could see us waiting till after then to make an announcement.
