Its good that we have 2 competent QB's, in IU's history any backup that eventually showed their worth had to deal with a trial by fire.

    Food for thought:
ESPN QBR rating has Michael Penix ranked 7thin the nation.  Peyton Ramsey is ranked 24th.
considering there are probably 130+ with enough throws to qualify, those are damn fine rankings.

Penix is ranked as the second best QB in the conference;  Ramsey is 6th,

7-2 *******!!!! Guaranteed winning season. Glad we didn’t fire CTA over the summer.

I’d like to see Penix be able to stay healthy but it’s awesome having Ramsey as THE backup.

Defense came up huge with takeaways. They’ve been solid in the second half of games but they kept a bad offense down yesterday.

Let’s get healthy and give PSU a hell of a game. They’ll be coming off a game at an undefeated Minnesota team and before going to an undefeated O$U. Trap game!!

So the opinion of us older,  more "experienced " posters matters more than the younger , less experienced posters?

To me the biggest change as the year has gone one has been the improvement of the offensive line. Scott could hardly run on anyone earlier in yr and now he is running really well and our QB's are hardly getting sacked. This has been the biggest thing that has led to our rise as year has gone on.

Not me. Dude has balled this year.  Might even be the better QB when you have a big lead.
we’re winning with of them, regardless of who has been in there.  Let’s enjoy Penix when he’s in and Ramsey when he’s in.

I wasn't advocating for the the one and done players at all. I really like the direction CAM is going and how the program is being built. If Lander wants an offer from Duke, then I'm not sure he fits what Indiana is trying to do. I was trying to say that those type of players don't view IU as being on the same level as the perennial top ten programs. And, won't until our on court performance is similar. Personally, I like watching kids develop over three or four years and getting to know them a little bit. I like the continuity that comes from kids playing together over time. As much as I liked Langford, he didn't help at all in terms of building the program in my opinion. I get that CAM had to recruit Romeo, but the timing was all wrong for a player like him. This is the long way around of saying I believe that getting old and staying old is best approach for IU.

I'll yin to your yang a little.   In a prior thread, most people who replied agreed that a better strategy at Indiana was "get old and stay old."  The talent differential of a 4* kid who is a senior in college vs. a 5* kid who's a freshman in college is negligible at worst, and favors the older, more experienced player at best.
I have no interest and I don't think Archie has an interest in recruiting kids who are NBA bound before they ever hit college campuses.  The pressure of that - a need to be successful with multiple top kids every year - is not bearable for any coach nor program who's not doing that successfully already.   Recruiting those players wouldn't be successful at Eastern Wyoming any more than it would be at Indiana.
My bigger point is this.  Archie Miller has landed 2 consecutive Indiana Mr. Basketball winners (Langford and Jackson-Davis), and has likely landed a 3rd as I think Leal is the one to beat this season if not Galloway).   He landed Ohio's Mr. Basketball a year ago.  His list of recruits is full of 4* players...all of whom look to be at least contenders at Indiana - meaning we might land them.
Indiana plays in a different world than Duke.  Than Kentucky.  I'm not sure I agree with North Carolina because they tend to have more experienced players; and I think Indiana will soon be on that level.   I don't think Archie wants to go down a path of having to land several top-tier recruits year in and year out.  That's one formula, but I don't think that's Indiana's formula.  Virginia, Michigan State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and others have shown the OTHER formula - recruit good players who stay, get old and stay old - works just as well if not better in some cases.  Texas Tech had a shot last season and they didn't have a single top 100 recruit.  What they DID have?  Really smart basketball players; experience; length; depth; shooters; and good defenders.  31-7.   But...statistically?   They were very average.  They weren't the best at anything except shooting % on both sides of the ball, which is a big one I realize.  They didn't dominate anything in their own conference, let alone nationally.  But....they were an absolute b!tch to play against because the pieces fit and they were able to play within Chris Beard's system and thrive in it.   I think Indiana is building something similar, and I think there's a reason many "top names" don't include Indiana on their list.  I'm not sure I really care very much.
My point in that is building a program around older players makes the pieces fit on a more regular basis than trying to find immediate contributors year in and year out.   It took Archie maybe an extra year to get this right; and I think early on he was trying to recruit a different way than he is now.  I suspect you will all be very happy with Indiana's program if you'll just let it play out.   And thank me later.   =)
So.....I guess I think it doesn't matter how some top tier recruits view Indiana.  5 years ago, Indiana sent 2 of the top 4 picks to the NBA draft.  Victor Oladipo by himself has made Indiana University cool again in the eyes of local college recruits, and I know that because I hear it relatively often.  IU is on their radar; and Archie is landing those players.  He is also having relative success outside the state, and is obviously attractive to very good players.

jk34 reacted to HoosierAloha in De'Ron Davis' Senior Season
I remember watching a video interview of De’Ron Davis after the Derby City All Star game (or whatever the name was) where he said that he’d been working on his trail and corner threes because that’s what Crean wanted him to do...

I really believe that Davis can be the big off the bench that gives opposing coaches nightmares. If that is to happen our guards and wings really need to focus on getting him good passes to the post that lead to scores. We need to force timeouts and opposing coaches into going back to their starting big to stop him. He has the tools but can he stay healthy and focused?

jk34 reacted to ray in De'Ron Davis' Senior Season
I searched for topics on De'Ron Davis and couldn't find any.  I read a nice article and wanted to share, so I decided to start this one for his senior season.  De'Ron could become a force, at least for brief spells, in his senior season if he remains healthy.  I always wondered what if he had been healthy throughout his career.  What if he hadn't missed summer conditioning before his freshman season?  What if he had not suffered the achilles injury?  What if he had not suffered the nagging ankle injury that left him gimping across the court last season in a limited role?  He has showed signs of brilliance with his passing and his back-to-the-basket post moves.  What if he has a healthy season and finds his role in a deep frontcourt where Archie Miller hopes to run his offense through?  What if he stays well-conditioned, remains out of foul trouble, and shoots free throws at a high rate this season?  Will he put together a string of games where the coaching staff will have to look for beneficial matchups to increase his role, or will he get lost in the depth charts for a yet another (and his final) season?  I'm not a gambling man, but if I was, then I would bet on him finding his role (the role he was brought to Bloomington to fill) regardless of the depth in the front court.  I truly hope he has a breakout season and can put together performances like he had against Duke without suffering anymore setbacks.
Here is the article this topic was originally intended for.

It was a neutral court game in the B1G tourney that some would basically call a play in game. One could argue they lost the play in game at Arkansas by not hitting a put back or the play in game could of been @Iowa where they lead they whole game in regulation and lost in OT, or the play in game could of been losing to Purdue at home by 2 on a haarms put back.

Hypothetically if we missed they tourney in year 3 i would do the same thing Ive said from the beginning. I give any coach at least enough years to see his first recruiting cycle  play as seniors. After that if it still isn’t working then you can move on. Hypothetically I sure would feel stupid if I fired a coach after 3 years because he couldn’t make the tourney in his first 3 years when hypothetically i gave him more time he went to 19 straight tourneys after those 3 years. Hypothetically of course

Good defense and guard play can make you perineal contenders. He knows a little about both. Basing your judgements on Archie after two years is not a fair analysis. Nobody knows if he is the "right" guy, but if you're ready to kick him to the curb already, we will never be able to get the "right" guy.
