KenPom ratings

Recommended Posts

I was just curious to see what everyone thought about the KenPom ratings. Me personally have never really understood them or what the numbers mean. Are they more reliable than the regular cbb poll (which I don't find very reliable as it is)?

Like what djsalway said. They are pretty good because they adjust to tempo, SOS, and other things such as that. His site has a lot of advanced stats tied to it, and it pretty good for predicting teams and what they will do during the season. It is a pretty good objective, analytical poll.

Also, it really depends on the person looking at them. Some people like simple, non-advanced stats. Then there are people that base their opinions on the advanced stats. For me personally, I love advanced stats because it isn't just black and white.

Does the committee come tournament time use this or is it only RPI they use?

I know I've read some stuff that coaches acknowledge his site, and say they will use it some. Don't know about the selection committee

I'm not sure that they do, but I think it'd be wise. They are fairly accurate. Only problem is that sometimes mid major teams that have really good records get high rankings because their offensive and defensive ratings aren't opponent adjusted. Like Stephen F. Austin is in the 60s, which doesn't seem fair, even if they are 20-2.

They use the data of every game played for the statistical probability of each outcome of game.  From there it is a simple bell curve to decide who should win.  They are probably the most accurate in determining games.  The flip side to that is their rankings because they take into account adjusted tempo in their rankings and in the previous 10 years you would see a team like Wisconsin always at or near the top (even if they weren't a top 10 team) due to their "style".  They take care of the ball and are efficient which KenPom likes.  Their bell is skewed on them due to the higher stress on each possession since they have fewer.  They are usually dead balls on us.  After you get past about oh, 10 games or so, they are pretty accurate.
