PC stellar: 2023-24 simmed season

Recommended Posts

Using the Torvik ratings as a guide, I'm going to  be simming the 2023-4 season for IU and will be posting the results over the next month or so.  I'm trying to keep to the actual IU schedule as much as possible.

Non-conference schedule:

  • Florida Gulf Coast at Assembly Hall
  • Army at Assembly Hall
  • Wright State at Assembly Hall
  • Empire Classic tournament.  The pairings have not been announced but IMO they would like U Conn to get into the championship game if possible and will give them the easiest matchup first;  So I will have U Conn playing Louisville and IU playing Texas.  Winners play each other and losers play each other.
  • Harvard at Assembly Hall
  • Auburn in Atlanta
  • Kansas at Assembly Hall
  • Morehead State at Assembly Hall
  • North Alabama at Assembly Hall
  • Kennesaw State at Assembly Hall.

Rosters are limited to ten players.  Although Torvik has Leal in the 10th spot, I have replaced him with Anthony Walker.  Starters are Johnson, Galloway, Mgbako, Reneau, and Ware;  bench is Sparks, Banks, Cupps, Newton, and Walker.

First sim has been simmed:  IU opens at home against Florida Gulf Coast.  Torvik is high on FGC, ranking them 118th overall and second in the Atlantic Sun.  PC Stellar predicted IU by 14 points.

First half saw a back and forth afair for the first fifteen minutes or so.  Xavier Johnson got in early foul trouble and only played 4 minutes in the first half, forcing Gabe Cupps to play a lot of minutes.  Cupps repsonded well.  Toward the end of the half, back-to-back three pointers by Ke'lel Ware (who was scoreless up to that point) separated IU from FGC, giving the Hoosiers a 40-30 halftime lead.  FGC cut it to six early in the second half before IU stretched it as far as 15 in the second half.  Final score was IU 81, FGC 73 although FGC never really threatened late in the game.

Stats:

Florida Gulf Coast:  26 of 68 from the field (38%), 5 of 20 from three (25%), 16 of 18 free throws (89%), 17 fouls, 39 reb, 8 assists, 9 turnovers, 1 block, 4 steals, 73 points.

Last game for tonight:  Army at Indiana.  PC Stellar picks IU by 22 in this one.

In sum, it was not a good performance by IU despite getting the win.  The Hoosiers again struggled from deep both in lack of attempts and makes.  Fortunately Army could not stop IU at the hoop and fouled often.  The Black Knights actually held a 54-52 lead midway through the second half but IU ended up pulling away and ended with a 76-65 win.

IU is now 2-0.

Army stats:  25/58 shooting (43%), 7/15 from three (47%), 8/13 ft (62%), 36 reb, 29 fouls, 16 assists, 2 bs, 7 steals, 17 turnovers, 65 pts

I know these are just sims (not knocking them, the effort you put into them is impressive), but two things I’m hoping to see out of the gate are a good jump in outside shooting to balance our game / spread the floor , and Gallo asserting himself more offensively this season, including from outside as part of that.
We should shoot a lot better against these teams, a start like above would be disconcerting

IU still looking for a statement win.  Next game up:  against Auburn in Atlanta.

Defensive minded game, IU and Auburn exchange small leads until Auburn takes a 28-27 halftime lead.  Midway through the second half and tied at 46, IU goes on a 9-0 run to take a 55-46 lead.  Unfortunately, IU falters down the stretch and a last second shot to tie the games falls short and the Hoosiers lose 63-61 to drop to 5-3.  IU lost it at the free throw line, shooting a putrid 7 of 18.

I'll say it first...

The season is over. Fire Woody, we should never have taken a swing on him. Can't recruit, don't know the PC steller college game. Will this over be over. Our facilities suck.

Galloway not getting much love… his stats are terrible

Personally I think he'll get more shots than the sims have been showing.  But bottom line is that in a vacuum if you projecting him statistically without assuming that, he's always been a very low volume shooter.  He put up 5.1 shots in 27.7 minutes last year and is getting 4.7 in 29.

That said, I don't know that I'd call his stats horrible -- shooting is low volume, but I would take 49/38/75 from him.  Getting 4 reb and 2 assists is livable.  But I am expecting that in reality his scoring will be 8 to 9 per game.
