Indiana HS Football 2022

With summer practices officially beginning last week, we are inching closer to the start of the season. SIAC is going to be a doozy with about 4-5 teams competing for the title, but preseason talks have Memorial and Mater Dei being the favorites

NCC will be a dog fight between Andrean, Hobart, and Lowell.  Last year they were tri-champions as Hobart beat Lowell 39-27 but lost on 45 yard field goal at the buzzer to Andrean 31-28;  Lowell then beat Andrean 17-7.  In the playoffs, Lowell got their revenge and beat Hobart 38-10 in the sectional championship;  Andrean, a 2A power, won the state tournament, beating Mater Dei 21-9 in the championship.

All three teams return some fire power;  Hobart returns sophomore quarterback Noah Ehrlich who last year as a freshman completed 120 of 188 (65%) for 1,813 yards and 16 touchdowns to just 1 interception;  halfback Trey Gibson also returns after transferring from Wheeler the previous year.  At Hobart last year he ran for 1,655 yards and a school record 33 touchdowns and also added 374 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns.  He enters his senior year with 4,122 yards rushing and 68 touchdowns.

At Andrean, quarterback Scott Ballentine returns for his junior year after completing 222 of 325 passes (68%) for 2,860 yards with 27 touchdowns to 8 interceptions.  Drayk Bown, rated as the number 75 player in the nation, returns at linebacker as well as leading the rushing attack.

For Lowell, dual threat quarterback Riley Bank returns after rushing for over a 1,000 yards and throwing for 650 more.  The Red Devils will also return a stellar defense.

The rest of the conference is......bad.  Hanover Central will join the conference in 2023-4 and will immediately be at least the fourth best team in the conference.

Will not be surprised if the 2A State Championship will be Andrean vs Mater Dei again

They should certainly both be favored to get there.  Andrean will need to contend with Luers up north.

MD has Brownstown, Linton and Triton Central to get past by. But they also have the easiest path to LOS than the other SIAC schools

Andrean had a little bit of 'luck' in dropping down to 2A.  It wasn't that long ago that they were 4A.  Size wise, they were 3A for years....success factor bumped them up to 4A and the winning in the tournament didn't continue.  They dropped back down to 3A after two years but were put into a sectional with a VERY good West Lafayette team.  Then they started having some enrollment issues that really didn't coincide with their athletic program and they dropped down to 2A.

They are now building a completely new school and athletic facility and moving towards St. John's -- about 20 miles south -- and will likely see their enrollment go up again.

Oh, I did not know Andrean was moving, is it because the current school is too small?

The current school isn't too small for their population....their enrollment has actually been shrinking.  Their current building is completely outdated (including no air conditioning) and their athletic facilities are incredibly lacking.  Part of the reason they are building (and relocating) is to try to grow their population.  Their athletics are still very good and they are able to recruit athletes in, but it's less and less able to pull in non-athletes.

There is a good chance that they will be partnering with the Franciscan Hospital network and relocate to a huge property that the Franciscan network bought in Crown Point.  It's a 510 acre site and may also include residential housing.....have not heard if that would potentially allow students to live on campus.

I don't believe ground has been broken on construction there but the lot has been purchased, so if that occurs it won't be real soon.  What will be interesting is that Illiana Christian moved into St. John -- located not far from Crown Point -- recently so it would seem like they would be competing for some of the same students -- although right now Illiana Christian has a decent amount of their student body coming in from Illinois since prior to the move that is where Illiana Christian was located.  IC doesn't have football at this point and I don't know that they have plans to have a football program, but they are starting to make some waves in basketball.

Sounds like us and Evansville Christian, since for a while, ECS parents would send their kids to Memorial or Mater Dei, but with them opening their High School/Middle School right next to Deaconess, our enrollment has dropped, but not as bad as MD.

However, it seems like our enrollment is beginning stabilize itself again for the 600-700 range, since I heard we have a big freshman class coming in. So we should be fine overall, will be interesting once Memorial drops back down to 3A for football, but that might be a couple years down the road.

Yep, sounds like it.  Andrean has had wide swings in enrollment.  Their senior class last year only had 80 students.  Their freshman class was at 119 -- difference was probably that the incoming freshmen are expecting to move into the new school when its built.  It was only about six years ago that they were a mid-enrollment 3A team and with success factor, they moved up to 4A;  that lasted a couple of years but they failed to win a sectional and they moved down to 3A -- but by that time, their enrollment was actually at 2A level but you can not drop more than one classification at a time from the success factor bump.  Two years later, they were down to 2A.  So basically it took them three years to drop from 4A to 2A.

As of 2021 school year, our Junior and Senior classes have been pretty small, however, last year’s freshman class was around 160 students and the incoming 2026 is like 150-170, I think. Football wise, we are bringing in about 20-30 freshman players, which is pretty good for Memorial’s standards. Even the 7/8th grade teams are averaging around 20-25 players too. Our incoming freshman is going to be pretty good, since there are some potential studs on the team and another Combs kid coming in (Southern Indiana fans should know the history). Only 10 more Friday’s to go against Jasper!

Merrillville dropped from 6A to 5A this past year….going to be hard to beat in the 5A tourney.

Cathedral will probably have something to say about 5A.

Going to be going to my first game of the season this Friday.  Bishop Chatard is primed to be a top contender for the Class 4A title, but I'm supporting my alma mater, Arsenal Tech.  Haven't won anything in football in forever, but you gotta at least support your school.

Chatard dropped back down to 3A

Whiteland's O line averages 285.3, just a massive line. Columbus East v Columbus North should be entertaining this week, but North may be too strong for my O's

Ummm nevermind. Didn't realize Cathedral was 6A this year. Yeah Pirates going to be tough in 5A. 5A isn't very good right now.

A lot of years 4A is tougher to win than 5A.  32 teams in 5A as opposed to 60 some in 4A.  When it was allowed (don’t know if it still is) Mishawaka once elected to play in 5A despite being 4A in size.

Just depends on if Cathedral is 5A.

5A in the south is poop.
